U.S. Congressman Neal R. Dunn will deliver the Commencement Address at the Chi-
pola 2020 Commencement Ceremony, Thursday, May 7, at 7 p.m., at the Dothan Civic
Center.
Congressman Dunn represents Florida’s 2nd congressional district which consists of the
eastern part of the Florida Panhandle along with much of the Big Bend region along the
Emerald Coast. Dr. Dunn serves on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and the
Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. He also
serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the Subcommittee on General Farm
Commodities and Risk Management and the Subcommittee on Biotechnology, Horticul-
ture, and Research.
Counted as members of the Chipola Class of 2020 are all who will complete degrees or
certificates from December of 2019 to May of 2020 or during the Summer 2020 terms.
Diplomas will be awarded for Bachelor of Science, Associate in Science, Associate in Arts and Workforce Development Certificates. Chipola
graduates may invite an unlimited number of family members and guests to share the event. The ceremony will be broadcast live on YouTube.

The Chipola Brain Bowl A team finished
as the national runner-up at the recent
Community College National Championship.
After a 10-0 start, the Chipola team lost to

eventual champion Valencia 265-260 in the final game of the championship bracket. This
gave Valencia the advantaged final edge in the championship match, meaning Chipola
had to win twice to win the title. Valencia won the first game 260-210 to claim the title.

and finishing 5th overall. They missed advancing to the 4 year tournament by
one spot. Chipola B team members are: Carson Pitts, Sam White, Jacob Weaver,
and Jayla Kindelspire.
Bree Bennett and Carson Pitts were named tournament all-stars based on
their individual performances. Carson was 8th in individual scoring, while Bree
was 11th.

CHIPOLA HOSTS SCREENING OF ALUMNI-PRODUCED FILM--

Chipola recently hosted a screening of the film,You Gave Me a Song,produced
by Ashley Melzer, an alumnus of Chipola. The film is about old-time music
pioneer Alice Gerrard. Producer Ashley Melzer, originally from Sneads, is a
producer,writer and media-maker living in Durham,NC.Born in North Florida.
She earned a Bachelors in Cinematic Arts from the University of Southern
California and a Masters in Folklore from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a graduate

Chipola Softball has Pitcher of the Week

The reigning national champion Chipola Softball team opens conference play Friday, March 20, at
the Panhandle Conference Tournament in Dothan. Chipola will play Northwest, March 20 at 1 p.m., and
Tallahassee, at 3:30 p.m. On March 21, Chipola plays Gulf Coast at 10 a.m. and Pensacola at 2:30 p.m.
Chipola travels to Northwest Wednesday, March 25, for a 4 p.m. double-header. The Lady Indians host
Northwest, Tuesday, March 31, in a 4 p.m. double-header.

Chipola’s Brianna Bailey was named the NJCAA Region 8 Pitcher of the Week for March 2-7. The right-
hander sophomore from Wewahitchka was 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA in three appearances during the voting
period. She pitched three complete-game victories over Santa Fe and Florida State College at Jacksonville. In
18 innings, she allowed only one earned run and five hits while striking out 37. She recorded three straight
double-digit strikeout games, including 16 against Santa Fe.

Coming off a 2019 national championship, the Chipola coaching staff—Belinda and Jimmy Hendrix, and
Kelly Brookins—was named the 2019 NFCA NJCAA DI National Coaching Staff of the Year. The team
captured the program’s third NJCAA DI national title in May 2019. Chipola posted a 52-5-1 record. At the
national championship, the Indians scored 69 runs, including 52 over the final three contests.
Chipola graduate Amy Woodham was named the 2019 NJCAA Female Athlete of the Year. Former player Candela Figueroa was named
the 2019 Dudley® NJCAA Division I Softball Player of the Year.
In 15 years at the helm of Chipola, the Hendrix duo has guided the program to three NJCAA national titles, eight Panhandle Conference
and seven FCCAA State championships, while compiling a 699-179-1 (.796) record.

Chipola will host the fourth Annual Mental
Health Symposium, Wednesday, April 8, from 9 a.m.
to noon in the Cultural Center.The Chipola Social and
Behavioral Sciences Department, Jackson County
Health Department and Chipola Black Student Union
are sponsoring the event.
Guest speaker is Matthew R. Standish, USAF
First Sergeant Retired, a Veterans Outreach Program
Specialist with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Students also will make presentations on various
mental health topics. Free breakfast snacks will be
provided. The event is free and open to the public.

its 12th Annual Teacher Workshop. Teachers and students
