Mother Courage
and her Children

by Bertolt Brecht

The play follows itinerant trader, Mother
Courage, as she pulls her wagon of wares
and her children through the carnage of
Europe’s religious wars. One by one she
loses her children to the war and finds
herself alone with her ramshackle wagon
with its tattered flag and freight of boots
and brandy. Considered by many to be one
of the greatest anti-war plays ever written
and Brecht’s masterpiece.

SIENA CENTER FALL SERIES EMBRACING
THE
COMMON
GOOD

The St. Catherine of Siena Center of Dominican University examines critical issues
of church and society in light of faith and scholarship. The Center calls together a wide
community of faith committed to deepening insight into the role of the Christian in today’s
world.
Since 1901, Dominican University has prepared students—in the words of its mission
statement—“to participate in the creation of a more just and humane world.” The Siena Center
has affirmed and advanced this mission since 2003. Join us this year as we mark our 15th
anniversary, and help us continue our work of embracing the common good through the
engagement of speakers, ideas, and one another.

Finding God in All the Wrong People
Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber

Wednesday, October 3, 2018, 7:00 p.m.
Old St. Patrick’s Church-Community Hall, 625 West Adams, Chicago $10
In Accidental Saints, New York Times best-selling author Nadia Bolz-Weber invites readers
into a surprising encounter with what she calls “a religious but not-so-spiritual life.” This
former standup comic turned pastor stubbornly, sometimes hilariously, resists the God she
feels called to serve. But God keeps showing up in the least likely of people. As she lives and
worships alongside these “accidental saints,” Nadia is swept into first-hand encounters with
grace—a gift that feels to her less like being wrapped in a warm blanket and more like being
hit with a blunt instrument. Join us for an evening of storytelling with the Lutheran pastor at
House for all Sinners and Saints, Nadia Bolz-Weber.

“My job is to point to Christ and to preach the Gospel
and to remind people that they’re absolutely loved ...
and all of their mess-ups are not more powerful than
God’s mercy.”
—NADIA BOLZ-WEBER

This event is co-presented with Old St. Patrick’s Church.

This inspiring presentation of scripture, song, preaching and conversation will highlight
Advent’s invitation to a deeper participation in God’s dream for the world. We are not called to

Friars of the Central Province of the USA.

Muhammad: The Man and the Message

Team from the Chicago Coalition for Inter-religious Learning (CCIRL)

Thursdays, October 11, 18 and 25, 2018, 2:00–4:00 p.m.
Priory Campus Room 263

Through the lens of interfaith sharing, this course offers an opportunity to examine the figure
and legacy of Muhammad—the ultimate role model for 1.5 billion Muslims, whose universal
messages are contained in the Qur’an, the foundational Islamic text. In three sessions we will
consider the life and teachings of the Prophet, the rise and spread of Islam and the role of
Islam in today’s world. The CCIRL team will provide experiences of interreligious dialogue and
examine how each of the three Abrahamic traditions understands the identity, message and
mission of the Prophet of Islam, the growth and development of Islamic civilization, and the
impact of Islam in the contemporary world.

September 5—October 17, 2018

Opening Reception; September 5
4:00-7:00 p.m., with artist talk at 3:30

For more than thirty years, much of Dmitry
Samarov’s work has been focused on
watching what goes on outside of himself.
With their dynamic perspectives and
rough, unresolved-look, his paintings and
drawings could never be mistaken for photographs but resemble the seen world nonetheless.
Whether it is a picture of his living room, a cluttered bookshelf, friends and family members, or
the view outside his window, Samarov trusts what he sees and makes marks that correspond
and echo what passes in front of his eyes. This exhibition will present a survey of his work
completed within the past twenty years.
