Good and gracious God, You are the source of all that we are and all
that we have.
We give You thanks for the blessings that You share with us.
Empower us to be good stewards of Your abundance. Send Your
Holy Spirit upon the people and programs of St. Joseph Parish and
School.
Renew and strengthen us with the power of Your loving presence.
Touch our elderly, our sick, and our wounded with Your gifts of
courage, healing and comfort. Be the source of wisdom and
guidance for our children and young people.
Bless our leadership with the strength and vision to help guide us in
the way of the gospel, and kindle in us the fire and passion of Your
love so that we may be good witnesses and prophets of Your
presence to all people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,

Dear St. Joseph Catholic School Supporters,

Welcome and thank you for attending Shamrock 2018! Tonight marks the
18th anniversary of this festive evening. Thank you to the Shamrock
Committee and the broader Chargers Parent Organization for the hours and
hours of meetings, phone calls, creativity and preparation to create this
wonderful event.

Tonight is all about fellowship, fun, and ultimately, the kids. Tonight is a
night to make new friends, catch up with old ones and invest in our future
for our students. Every dollar raised this evening directly benefits our
children. From our 1:1 iPad program to the phone communication system,
your investment in children this evening is sure to have a marked impact
on their education and our community.

Part of the money that we raise tonight will go towards new bleachers along
with refinishing the gym floor. This facility is used for physical education,
lunch, sporting events, the musical, Christmas and Easter masses, Fun
Days, assemblies and many other events. Your generosity will allow for the
updates to be made to a place that is used by the greater parish
community.

Be assured that we are frugal in our spending, yet generous in our spiritual
and educational vision for our students. St. Joseph Catholic School is a
leader in education. Innovative education in the forms of instruction,
technology and learning experiences abound. Our dedicated and well-
trained staff works tirelessly to share their faith, grow students' minds and
hearts and cultivate innovative and collaborative leaders in our community.

Each student in our school is known, appreciated and challenged. With
opportunities daily to grow and lead, our students develop the confidence
to live their faith, try new things and collaborate with peers and adults.

St. Joseph is a great place for our students to continue their growth of
being lifelong followers of Christ. Your generous support allows us to
continue to inspire families to lead, learn and serve through the Catholic
faith.

In Christ,

Mr. Casey Kettmann
Principal

8th Grade Memories

As they prepare for high school, we asked the eighth graders to share
some of their favorite memories of St. Joseph. Here is what they said:

Martin B.
Throughout my 10 years at St. Joseph, I have experienced tremendous
things. Out of all of those memories, though, my favorite was the time Nate
and I gave a speech at the 8th grade graduation ceremony. We were in 7th
grade, and we had bonded so much with the people in 8th grade. Giving
this speech was kind of like one last celebration before they had to leave
St. Joseph and move onto high school.

Will G.
My favorite memory at St. Joseph is my friends and all the memories I get
to make with them. I am so close to my friends that they became family,
and in our Catholic beliefs, they are family. Through our happy moments
and sad moments, we are all in it together. We are always there
for each other in the rainiest weather and brightest sunshine. We will al-
ways meet again someday. And this to me is my greatest memory.

Katie S.
My favorite memory from St. Joseph is at the end of fourth grade. Our
fourth grade teacher brought some of her possessions from home that she
didn’t need anymore to the class and there were a lot of interesting things.
There was a conch shell, tiny paint canvases, a lot of educational/other
books, and many other cool things. It was really fun to get to pick out
things to take home for the year.

Claire M.
One of my favorite memories from going to St. Joseph Catholic School was
way back when I was in Kindergarten. I remember every day when it was
playtime, the girls in my class and I would do each other’s hair with fake
brushes and hair tools. It was one of my favorite memories because it was
a bonding experience, and I remember looking forward to it every day.
Even though it was something small, it was one of my favorite memories
because those girls have become some of my closest friends in the past few
years.

Nate W.
My favorite memory from my time at St. Joesph Catholic School was during
a track meet from my seventh grade year. It was the 4x800 race, and I was
the anchor. We were easily in second place when I got the baton, but we
were well behind the first place team, and their anchor was extremely fast.
I was somehow able to remain at about the same pace as him, when all of
the sudden, there was about 200 meters left, and I was about 75 meters

28

behind him. I started sprinting and was able to slowly gain on him. The
crowd started to get loud until eventually it became a roar. He turned and
started to sprint, but I passed him about a meter before the finish line to
win.

Lauren R.
One of my absolute favorite memories from my time here at St. Joseph
was from when I was just a little third grader. This memory took place
during the cold, snowy winter at recess. All of us third graders, fourth
graders, and fifth graders decided to make a huge snow fort against the
old baseball fence. We all worked together for a couple weeks to create
something of our own. Every time I think back to that memory, it puts a
smile on my face because we put aside our differences and worked to-
gether to create something special to us.

Luke R.
My favorite memory is when the Xavier football players came to the
school this year and showed the state championship trophy. I am the wa-
ter boy for the team so the players had me come up in front of the school
and take a picture holding the championship flag. I chose this memory
because I got to talk to the football players, and I found out that my name
was on the state championship trophy. This was a great experience for me
in my 8th grade year.

Katelyn W.
My favorite memory was when we went to the Granger House and we all
ate our lunches in Marion Square and played red rover. The funniest part
of this day was when we saw a mannequin in a store window and we
thought it was a real person. We also got tired on the walk there and had
to sit down and rest.

Andrew G.
My favorite St. Joseph memory would have to be writing letters to Santa
with our buddies. It’s so fun to hear their adorable responses to the ques-
tions you ask them. You get all sorts of different, and sometimes funny,
answers. Honestly, having preschool and kindergarten buddies is fun in
general, but the letters to Santa is my favorite thing.

Elijah P.
I like many things about St. Joseph School. The best memory I have of St.
Joseph is going on the ski trip this year and learning how to ski.

29

Grace B.
My favorite memory here at St. Joseph was during the last week of school
last year. Rachel Burke, Ms. Mosnik, and I all sang High School Musical
songs at the top of our lungs. This was my favorite memory because it was
an amazing way to end a year, and who wouldn’t want to sing all the songs
from your favorite childhood movies with a teacher?

Max S.
My favorite memory is playing our favorite card game, tiene Len. We play a
few rounds everyday after school because it’s so much fun. I remember
one round in particular. We sit down by the window, Andrew getting the
deck, Tri is dealing the hand. I get a good hand, two pigs, which are two’s,
the strongest hand of the game tiene Len. Andrew goes first because he
has the 3 of spades, he is complaining because he had four 3’s and now he
only has 3. We put out our cards, and everyone has less than five. I believe
I can win because I have 1 pig, a king, queen, jack, and a seven. Tri, who
won the previous round, goes and puts a 3 down. I thought about what I
could do, and immediately I thought-seven. I put my hand out. I put a
seven, Andrew plays a nine, Tri plays a jack, I play a two, and this round is
over. I put out my run, and I won.

Keli Y.
My favorite memory is when we went to Adventureland for the band trip.
We were going on one of our last rides until we went back home. We were
moving quickly, so we didn't have enough time to set our stuff down. We
got in line, and as we are moving, a kettle corn bag rips and explodes eve-
rywhere. We all were stunned for a minute and then burst out laughing.

Isabella A.
My favorite memory from St. Joseph was when we were in 6th grade at
S.O.D.A. I remember getting on the hayride and telling scary stories with
everyone. When we got off, we were told to run around the yard, and that
was when the 8th grade class silly stringed us, an annual but secret tradi-
tion. It always makes me laugh when I think about how funny it was when
we all got around the yard and were covered in silly string.

Tri V.
Throughout my 2 years at St. Joseph School, I’ve made many memories.
Each of them has slowly made me into the person I am now. I would
probably tell you that my best memory at St. Joseph Catholic School is
spending the day with my friends the day before Christmas break. The rea-
son I love this day so much is that it’s a day that we can play games and
have fun together.

Kids say the Darndest Things:

Do you ever shudder at the thought of what your youngster says at school?
We asked a few of St. Joseph’s finest faculty and staff members to share
what they’ve heard, and here’s what they said:

In preschool…
I told the class we were going to spend this week learning about a bird
that cannot fly (penguins) and I wanted them to think about it and guess
what it could be. I was about to give them more clues when immediately
one of my boys said, I know what it is... a dead one.

In kindergarten…
Several of my kindergarteners were talking about why it's good to
be married before you have kids: they noted that you need to have a dad
around to hold the baby so the mom can shower.

People sometimes use cucumbers to help them sleep. They put them on
their eyes.

I know Mr. Kettmann's name... Casey. Like Casey's pizza place.

It’s going to be really warm today. It's going to be like 40 degrees.

You’re an adult when you're 18.
I think you have to be 33.
No, ask your mom.

I watched a movie called “The Never Ending Story”...but it did end.

In daycare...
Mrs. Fenske was speaking with a child about who made the best food,
Mom or Dad. The little guy quickly responded, "Dad." She asked him what
he made best and he replied, "Red meat."

A little boy was running and racing his friends in the gym when he asked
Mrs. Severin to time him. She agreed and he ran a gym lap in 18 seconds.
He asked what his time was and she told him, "18 seconds." He looked at
her with a concerned look on his face and said, "No, but was I fast"? She
said, "Yes"! He said, "So my time was FAST, not 18 seconds."

A little girl wasn't feeling well and Mrs. Severin explained how the
thermoscan thermometer would go across her forehead with a blinking
light and beeping sound. The student looked at her and said, "Does it go
through my brain?"

32

One afternoon after school around pickup time, a student asked Mrs.
Severin, "What time is your Dad coming to pick you up"? Mrs. Severin
explained that her dad wasn't coming to pick her up. The little girl looked
at her and said, "Won't your Mom be sad [if you don't come home]"?

One morning before the first school bell, while in before school care, a
student said, "Mrs. Severin, I need to give you something." As Mrs. Severin
walked closer to her, she ran and gave her a huge hug.

A student and Mrs. Severin were talking about singing the ABC's and the
little guy said, "You go first." So, she cleared her throat and started singing,
"Z, B, R, X, Q, H, L," and the student stopped her saying, "Mrs. Severin, you
need to go to preschool." She said, "Well, let me hear you sing the ABC's."
He proceeded to clear his throat, just as she did and sang the ABC's
perfectly.

A student and Mrs. Severin were playing Old Maid when, inevitably, Mrs.
Severin couldn't keep the Old Maid out of her hand of cards. The
preschooler kept laughing and laughing as she would draw it out of his
hand each time. During the last pick of his (to determine who would win),
he drew the Old Maid. He shouted, "Agh, I never wanted to be an Old
Lady"!

One boy was soon going on a family vacation to Colorado to see Nana and
Papa. Since he is always interested in making things or bringing things
back from childcare to give to his sister, mom and dad, Mrs. Severin asked
if he could bring her something from his vacation. Being the deep thinker
he is, he said, "Well, maybe." Mrs. Severin asked if he could bring a
snowball back. He said (in a very serious voice and with emphasizing
hands), "That's not going to be possible"!

One little lad is always questioning things. For instance, daycare staff will
say, "We are going to the gym to play." He will always answer saying, "For
real life"?

In 5th grade…
This year Mr. Kettmann called an early dismissal on Groundhog Day, due
to the weather. One 5th grader heard about this and said it was all the
groundhog’s fault!
