As the debut of ‘Arc Flash – Myths, Facts and Folklore’ went so well, we organised a If you would

CAKE BAKE

In support of the Electrical Industries Charity, and ahead of the
Mudnificent7 obstacle course race we’d signed up for, we held a
charity cake bake as a way of fundraising.

With a few weeks to go before our BRIGHT SPARX team completed
the 7km mud run, the office and warehouse staff were excitedly
discussing what they we would be bringing in to sell off, at 50p a
portion.

And the turnout was brilliant! There was everything from chocolate
brownies, Mars Bar slices and Keyline pie to homemade bread and
giant Scotch eggs. Throughout the day, we were all dipping in and
out of the conference room to taste a bit of everything and in the
end we raised an impressive £101 for the Charity.

ENA recap

Belfast was the home to the Energy Network Association Safety,
Health and Environment Management Conference in May and
was where Steve, Anthony and Angus visited for the two day
event. The Skanwear representatives, from the Marketing, Product
Development and Sales departments respectively, went to Ireland
as exhibitors to the forum where best practices were shared and
reviews of safety, health and environment challenges and concerns
were aired.

Angus gave a presentation to delegates on the usual topic – Arc
Flash and the Last Line of Defence. By repeating this presentation at
exhibitions and events throughout the year, Angus and the rest of
the team hope to raise awareness on this relatively-unknown topic.

OHLEX recap

In June, a Skanwear team descended on Chester Racecourse
for the annual EA Technology Overhead Lines Conference and
Exhibition. We were one of 60 exhibitors there showcasing the
very best of what we have to offer; two mannequins were dressed
in the most popular STRATA® garments with our Key Account
Managers Mike and Angus talking attendees through the features
and benefits. The competition we ran, offering guests the chance
to win prizes ranging from a magnum of champagne to a skydive,
was a great success and people were queuing up to enter! Angus
delivered a speech too on the Arc Flash risk, opening with the
question of ‘what is your last line of defence?’ Although the room
was very hot due to the weather, people stayed behind to raise
queries and organise meeting in future to discuss their PPE needs.

PERFECTING DESIGN

WOMENSWEAR

For the last three months, Garment Technicians Charlotte and Joanne
have been working on our top secret line of womenswear to add to the
ever increasing STRATA brand.

Generally speaking, women needing Arc Flash clothing have difficulty
finding appropriate garments designed to fit the female form. Most
women are having to wear men’s garments that have been labelled
unisex and because STRATA is committed to keeping all employees
looking uniform and smart across all different body types, job roles and
industries, our womenswear line is currently underway.

Whilst still in the early developmental stage, the collection has been
started with three garments; the shirt, the chino trouser and the polo
shirt. In the future, Product Development will look to extend the range in
order to fully equip and protect women without compromising on fit.

Charlotte said, “After a Friends of STRATA visit one lady told me that she
had been given small men’s clothing that was too big for her which then
caused her to trip and fall.

“I personally feel it’s a real shame that in this
day in age women are being treated as an
afterthought”

She continues, “however with more and more women joining the
industry and needing PPE, I am really excited to be starting this new
project with STRATA.”

Developing a new range from scratch requires a considerable
amount of research prior to production. The Friends of STRATA
grassroots campaign helped with design feedback as during site
visits, Charlotte and Joanne can have an informal chat with the
wearers to get honest opinions on what is needed and wanted.

The women’s line will be made from the same lightweight fabric
as used in other STRATA garments however will have extra style
features added. This will make it smart and formal enough to be
worn by more corporate employees yet light weight and practical
enough to be comfortably worn on site. At this stage in the
development, the size sample sets for the shirt and polo shirt have
been ordered from our manufacturer and fit sessions are being
arranged to review the garment fit across all sizes.

For the chinos, work is being done to make the style fit across all
sizes from 6-22.

Product Development hope to have these three
items launched for production by the end of
the year.

PROSTHETIC LEG GARMENT CRAIG GODSON

The Product Development team were faced with a challenge when a current BWSC
customer presented their latest request.

BWSC employee Craig Godson needed Arc Flash garments that took into
consideration his prosthetic leg following on from an accident at home.
In the following year he struggled to get PPE that fit properly whilst still
offering the same level of Arc Flash protection.

Garment Technician Joanne O’Neill designed trousers and overalls for Craig
with a zip on the outside for ease of use. This decision was made through
extensive research into how prosthetic garments are currently made and
how the STRATA clothes could cater for Craig’s needs. As these were to be
Arc Flash garments, Joanne built a gusset into the leg. This piece of fabric
placed behind the zip was for protection and a pleat added into the knee
pad for better mobility as his current trousers were rubbing against that
area.

Joanne and Charlotte, our other Garment Technician, went to visit Craig
on site at the BWSC Sleaford plant with the prototype. After trying the
garments on he was very happy with the functionality and fit and following
on from the visit, Craig got in touch to show his thanks, “To some people
they’re just overalls but to me it’s more; you and your team have made
things so much easier for me, meaning I can continue working.”

The coverall version is now in production and Craig
will have this by August.

GARMENT SPOTLIGHT

Our Production Development team are working on perfecting the
design of the STRATA® brand through thoughtful research and
creativity. Here we are introducing some new garments to our range.

The SFX300 Work Shirt

This superlight weight shirt (pictured left) is suitable for all work activities
and is especially suited for warmer climates. This is due to it being made
from woven fabric offering breathability by not trapping heat. Not only
this but it is Arc Category 2 and has 8.5cal protection. Now stocked,
wearers can choose either charcoal grey or navy blue.

The SFX221 Chino

This new lightweight trouser (pictured left) has been designed for
those in the job roles that will see them based mainly within an
office, yet still have a requirement to go out on site. Because of this,
the lightweight fabric satisfies the Arc Category 2 meaning wearers
have protection for up to 9.9cal. With the office scenario in mind,
the leg has been taped for a corporate fit. This chino trouser is now
in stock in navy blue.

New Rip-stop fabric:

We can now introduce the Rip-stop versions of the STRATA garments
already in stock. Rip-stop fabric has been engineered with a unique
blend of fibres giving great tear strength, abrasion resistance, comfort
and Arc Protection.
