OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB

Outdoor Adventure Club Hike

to Badwell Cemetery,
Homestead, and the SVRT

by LINDA McCLINTOCK
HUGE CROWD turned out to hike to the
Badwell Cemetery and the Homestead site
on Monday, February 5. Bill Clark gave us
a wonderful presentation about the French
Huguenots who settled in this area. He provided
the genealogy of the Gibert family and talked about those buried in
the cemetery. He explained why the slave graves were relocated to
their current sites.
We then walked down to the Homestead site where Bill provided
information on the site and its owners over the years until it was no
longer occupied. It is now owned by the U.S. Forest Service and is
being maintained by that agency with the assistance of local private
individuals . Some of the foundation stones and bricks which were
used in the house and other buildings can still be seen.
The last part of the Hike was on the SVRT Trail. Barry Russell
spoke about the donation boxes which were a Boy Scout project.
He told us how prisoners provided the labor to prepare the land for
laying of the track. They did this while chained together with only
hand tools, wheel barrows and wagons to move the dirt to fill in the
various valleys. We learned this and much more from Berry as we
walked the first mile on the trail.
The OAC wants to thank both Bill and Barry for their time,
research and excellent presentations. We all appreciated learning so
much about this area.•

by MARK YOUNG AND KEN WILES
n Saturday, February 10 the SLV Rod &
Gun Club presented their 3rd annual St.
Valentine’s Day event which is a fun shoot
held at the SLV pistol range.
The host for the day was Mark Young,
club president and the range master was
Len Azzarano.
The day was humid, cool and overcast.
The weather however, did not deter
participation. The event requires a team of

two shooters each. One of the shooters was shooting for the first
time and one for the third time - both did a great job!

“The morning was filled with learning
experiences and a great time
was had by all.”

The course of fire consisted of 13 bowling pins and 5 clay
targets. Each partner had 10 rounds so there was a total of 20
rounds for 18 targets. Each team shot twice with the first being a
slow fire round and the second being timed at 30 seconds.

The first place winners were Len Azzarano and Janie Clark.
Second place resulted in a tie between the team of Ken Wiles and
Ann Fago and the team of Wayne and Phyllis Schollenberger. This
required a “shoot-off.” The course of fire for the shoot-off had 4
clays and each team member had 2 bullets. Ken and Ann won the
shoot-off.

The morning was filled with learning experiences and a great time
was had by all.•

Pets of the Month

BOB

Bob’s Tale
The good news is you’ll never have to worry about getting my tail caught in your rocking chair or

feeling guilty because you accidentally stomped on it. The bad news is, well, there ain’t much tail there
to talk about. You see, I suffered an unfortunate incident, and the good doctor had no choice but to
leave me with but an inch to swish about. That’s why they call me Bob, as in “bobtail.” Clever, huh? It’s
OK though – I have other ways to communicate appreciation or when I am not amused. You will soon
catch on.

I love being petted and fussed over, however; truth be told, I’m not much into being picked up. It’s
nothing personal mind you, just never took a shine to it. I get along with other cats just fine. I was born
6/30/16; so I have lots of years left to play and I have all my shots, etc. The only thing left for you to do
is come and get me!

DAISY

Save the last dance for Daisy
Remember that pimply kid at homecoming, the one who was always pressed against the wall waiting

for someone – anyone – to glance their way? Well, my name is Daisy; and that’s kind of been my story.
I used to suffer from what I like to call “doggie acne,” and it made me itch a whole lot and left me with a
few wrinkly black marks; but the worst is behind me. I take vitamins and bathe regularly; and at 6 years
old and 64 pounds, it has made me a new dog.

My years of waiting for that someone special who can see my inner beauty has left me a patient,
gentle girl. I love people and get along with my own kind. I don’t hate them when a nice family picks
them before me. I know there is someone out there who will see past the wrinkles and right to the love
in my heart. And when they do, I will be ready to dance.•

Please leave a message at 864-391-2349 or email us at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about our available dogs and cats.

We are local surgeons who live and practice full-time in the Lakelands community. We care for all our
patients here at the region’s largest referral hospital. You and your family members don’t need to
travel out of town. As your hometown orthopedist, we are proud to serve you and your physician when
surgery is needed.

High-quality and safe care for our patients is our highest priority at Self Regional. In addition, you have
access to a wide array of specialists, normally only available in much larger, metropolitan areas.

Our surgeons are board certified and several have received fellowship training in a subspecialty area;
and, together, we are able to offer both general services and the extra skill associated with a specialist.
Our subspecialties include:

• Minimally invasive surgery
• Arthroscopic surgery

(microscopic joint surgery)
• Hand, foot and shoulder surgery
• Sports medicine
• Total joint replacement
