McCormick Area Veterans Association (MAVA) Update
by LEN FOUCH
THE McCORMICK AREA Veterans Association has been quite active since our last posting.
• We presented Ron Hinkle, retired Navy pilot (Viet Nam Veteran) with his “Quilt of Valor”
• Several members participated in the “Welcome Home” to Viet Nam veterans in Greenwood
• We celebrated Howard Milhoan’s (WWII & Korean War Veteran) 94th birthday
• We became the second drop off point for the USMC “Toys for Tots” in McCormick County
(Thank you, Cisco Torres!)
• We started making plans for visiting the Veterans Home in Anderson (Thank you, Joy Swiecki!)
• We partnered with the McCormick County High School JROTC & Sandy Branch Volunteer Fire
Department for our first Flag Retirement Ceremony
• We participated in the Wreaths Across America Program
• We out grew our previous meeting room and moved to the Community Room (The Ark) at the
Lutheran Church by the Lake
• Last but not least…we began planning for our 2022 MAVA Golf Tournament. Whew!!!
If you are looking to get involved with a proactive, community oriented group of veterans, then we
definitely have a place for you.
The McCormick Area Veterans Association (MAVA) was started a short time ago in response to
several area veterans seeing a need for a support function for veterans and their families moving to the
area. Our purpose is not to supplant any other veteran organizations, but to offer yet another form of
support for our veterans and their families. We meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Community
Room (The Ark) at the Lutheran Church by the Lake @ 6PM. Meetings are open to ALL honorably
discharged veterans in the McCormick area. Meetings usually last an hour, followed by about an hour
of social time. Hope to see you there!•

SAVANNAH LAKES VILLAGE PICKLEBALL CLUB
IS A SMASHING SUCCESS!!!
by JOE LOCKE
Founder and President, Savannah Lakes Village Pickleball Club
PICKLEBALL IS THE fasted growing sport in America and
Savannah Lakes Village is a shining example. The number of people
playing Pickleball at SLV has tripled in the last year to over 150
and is growing steadily. SLV recently reconfigured the Pickleball
Complex in order to support that level of interest and we now have
6 beautiful courts to play on.
To help organize and manage that growth we recently created
the SLV Pickleball Club (SLVPC). The Pickleball Club is primarily
a social organization formed to promote the growth and enjoyment for residents of SLV. All SLV residents are welcome to join the club
and it is a great way to have fun, get some exercise, and meet new people. As we grow, the Club will coordinate the following activities and
events:
• New player introduction and training/development for all • Host rating events
skill levels • Communicate where else to play in the region, both indoors
• Run SLV Internal Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Ladder and outdoors
Leagues • Keep members informed of rule changes, external
• Participate in Intra-Club events with other Pickleball Clubs tournaments, and topics of interest
• Host SLV Internal and Open Invitation Tournaments • Schedule and coordinate other Pickleball and non-Pickleball
• Oversee professionally run and internal Skills Clinics related events
The Club recently hosted our 1st Annual New Year’s Day Pickle-a-thon, complete with music, and attended by over 50 participants!!! We
plan to have many events this year and we are very excited for 2022!!!
If you are a resident of SLV and are interested in joining the Pickleball Club, please reach out to Joe Locke at [email protected].
I look forward to meeting you.
Be safe my friends, and have an awesome month.•

NEW PATIO FUNDRAISER LAUNCHED AT SLV
by ROB CLANCY
President MSG9
Administrator, SLV Patio Brick Walkway Campaign
FIRST OF its kind project has been launched in Savannah Lakes Village that is designed to raise funds for a new patio
addition at the Tara Golf Club. The SLV Brick Walkway Project will allow members and supporting businesses to purchase
permanently inscribed bricks in a walkway that will lead directly to the new patio. This structure, which will be inset into the hill
below the putting green at Tara, will have a concrete walkway (ramp) from the existing cart path to the concrete patio deck.
The concrete pad will have the same retaining wall structure and stone fascia as the current terraces recently placed on the hill
at the 18th hole. Matching the stone façade will add a beautiful feature to the overall effect. We anticipate that this addition will be enjoyed
by golfers and non-golfers alike as the location will provide an ideal vantage point for viewing the 9/18 green as well as the adjacent Little
River cove. It’s going to be a prime social space, perfect for outdoor dining and socializing.
Funding for the deck project will come from a unique new approach for all residents, local businesses,
and corporate sponsors. The concrete walkway will be enclosed to hold engraved paving bricks "The concrete
that anyone can purchase. Buyers will create their own brick through an online process and choose walkway will be
their own wording for their inscription. SLV POA is administrating the program in partnership with the
SLV Men’s Social Golf 9 Hole league (MSG9).
This patio has been discussed for many years and the purchase of bricks will fund the entire project. enclosed to hold

The results will be an additional platform for golfers and non-golfers to enjoy as a beautiful new
amenity.
The Brick Walkway Project was proposed by Project Administrator Rob Clancy, SLV resident and bricks that anyone
can purchase."
current President of the MSG9 golf league. Rob states “I was speaking with Bob McIntosh our
Director of Golf Operations who told me that a new patio addition was desired but was not able to be
prioritized in our short-term capital spending forecast. I thought a brick walkway project would let every
resident have a stake in creating our own new social gathering place, instead of waiting to find room in SLV’s capital investment plan.”
“With approval from the MSG9 Leadership team, we presented this Brick Walkway Proposal to the POA and our Board of Directors for
their support. I know that similar projects have been very successful and believe that every resident of SLV will benefit by buying a brick
and making this project a huge success for all of us”.
The purchase process is simple: go to SLVBRICKS.ORG and follow the easy instructions. If help is needed, contact the following

McCormick, SC of fact, this is the only time the word appears in scripture. This unique word is worth
(864) 852-4722 looking at more closely. The Greek for peace is Eirene. It is a powerful concept of
wholeness and completeness. It is a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.
The idea of peace in the biblical sense is not limited to the lack of conflict. The
reason for the absence of hostility is the important component of the equation of
what makes lasting peace. It is not because one party is stronger or more powerful
than the other. Enduring peace comes through shared blessing and mutual benefit.
The blessing of the peacemaking Jesus is talking about is hard work. The second
half of the word peacemaker reflects the challenge. The Greek, poieo, includes a
spectrum of meanings that will make you perspire from effort and expending energy.
It can be used for building roads, growing crops, construction of a house, or general
labor.
I have seen this concept at work in such organizations as Habitat for Humanity.
People working side by side as they build, not only a house, they build relationships.
They construct a promising future, not only for those who will make this house a
home; they construct a community peace by peace. Now that is a sermon that needs
to be delivered every day and that everyone will show up for!•

We are local surgeons who live and practice full-time in the Lakelands community. We care for all our
patients here at the region’s largest referral hospital. You and your family members don’t need to
travel out of town. As your hometown orthopedist, we are proud to serve you and your physician when
s urgery is needed.
High-quality and safe care for our patients is our highest priority at Self Regional. In addition, you have
a ccess to a wide array of specialists, normally only available in much larger, metropolitan areas.
Our surgeons are board certified and several have received fellowship training in a subspecialty area;
a nd, together, we are able to offer both general services and the extra skill associated with a specialist.
Our subspecialties include:
• Minimally invasive surgery
• Arthroscopic surgery
(microscopic joint surgery)
• Hand, foot and shoulder surgery
• Sports medicine
• Total joint replacement
When your physician recommends
an orthopedic specialist, Orthopaedic
Associates of the Lakelands is local
healthcare worth asking for. Nonereefdeerdra. l
