overall aesthetic and color scheme of
your existing interior design. Ideally, the

INCORPORATE
SCULPTURAL EXTRAS

You can make your living room more
luxurious by complimenting its interior
design with thoughtfully placed structural
elements. Rather than typical straight
lines or circular forms, keep a watchful eye
for furnishings that have unanticipated
silhouettes, interesting shapes or
unexpected design qualities.

When selecting living room furnishings,
remember that shape plays a key role,
because it has a powerful impact on the
subconscious mind. Even a few minor
structural placements can affect the way
guests perceive your living space if you

Vacation no longer has to fit into the perfect bundle of a
beach vacation with ocean breezes and swaying palms. It
doesn’t mean hours lounging in a chaise while waves crash,
and it doesn’t mean luxury dinners in a fine restaurant and
a quiet evening in resort hotel rooms. Modern vacations are
so much more active, busy, and full-throttle. Adventure travel
has become the go-to method of vacationing, and it’s includes

WHAT IS ADVENTURE
TRAVEL?

Adventure tourism has grown in
recent years because of the increased
connectivity of the world. If adventurers
can stay connected to work or home while
they explore the farthest corners of the
Earth, then they are more likely to go.
Plus, adventures shared over social media
inspire other would-be travelers to book
their own excursions. Inspired by this bold
travel style, hotel and tour operators have
increased their adventure offerings and
embraced this movement.

But what is adventure travel? When you
think about adventure travel, you are likely
considering outdoor adventures. Hiking,
biking, walking, climbing, paddling are
all covered under the umbrella. Gaining
experiences, trying something new,
crossing off a bucket-list item are all
motivators for adventurer travelers, and so
they go far and wide to do anything.

Adventure travel is always active, but
it can also be quite luxurious, and that
duality is a huge part of the appeal.
Consider exploring the Serengeti by Jeep,
and then cozying up under the stars next
to a fire pit and your luxury tent with
a feather bed and climate control. Or
SCUBA dive through Fiji while sailing
aboard a luxurious catamaran sail boat
with a private captain and chef. The
opportunities for both adventure and
luxury are limitless when you consider
the reaches of the globe and all that is
possible.

Both seasoned and novice explorers and
adventurers will discover something that
will spark their curiosity and make their
heart beat a little faster. The following
list of adventure travel experiences are
a great place to start planning your next
trip.

The beauty of Provence is perfectly
complemented by its extraordinary
culinary offerings. Add to that the
numerous books, movies and travel shows
that highlight the region’s best finds, and it
is no wonder that food travel to Provence
remains incredibly popular. If your goal is
to attend a cooking studio, Le Marmiton
at La Mirande (a picture-perfect boutique

Typically, programs run from one to four
days and feature instruction, conversation
and some secrets from top area chefs. Of

THE MAKING OF
A CHEF

When a young, aspiring chef breathes
the rarified culinary air of Aspen, Naples,
Santa Barbara and other high-profile
destinations, chances are their ascent to
restaurant stardom will keep them from
returning home to their roots.

Born-and-bred Houstonian Ford Fry was
on that very path. Yet after graduating
from the prestigious New England
Culinary Institute and sharpening his skills
at some of the nation’s finest restaurants,
Ford path led him to Atlanta where he has
left a major imprint on the food scene.
Lucky for us he decided it was time to
come home in 2015.

“What can I say, I missed the food of my
youth,” says Ford.

COMING HOME
WITH INSPIRATION
AND GRACE

When it came time to open his first
restaurant in the city of his roots, Ford
admits he worried some would lump him
together with other out-of-town chefs
since he had been away from Houston for
so long.

“I wanted everyone to know that my true
roots are in Houston,” he explains. “We
had several locations to choose for our
first restaurant but I thought, what better
place than where I used to ride my bike to
get candy.”

In the fall of 2015, Ford opened State of
Grace in the storied, refurbished Lamar-
River Oaks Shopping Center. Since then,
critics have raved about its iconic raw bar
and fresh, Texas grilled specialties.

“I like to think of State of Grace as a fancy

Whether you are an avid chef or just beginning your
culinary adventures, a well-stocked spice cabinet is a
must. As you develop your pantry, you’ll find that there
are spices you can’t live without and those that you
love, but, either because of their flavor or exotic nature,
only use on special occasions. If you are looking for

FEATURES

GARAGE

SIMPLE GARAGE MAKEOVER TIPS

If you have been dreaming of remodeling your garage, there
is no better time of year to do it. From redesigns focused on
decluttering and organization to creating a super garage to
showcase for your vintage automobiles, you can do it with a
bit of planning, time and patience. If you are overwhelmed by
the possibilities, read on for suggestions on how to implement a

garage makeover that is right for you.

30 | THE DISTINCTIVE LIFE® HOUSTON EDITION

BRAINSTORMING
YOUR GARAGE
MAKEOVER

The first step in any good redesign is
to decide what your needs are. Do you
want to create a museum-like space or
are you trying to remodel your garage to
serve more than one purpose? Does your
current garage look more like a high-end
storage unit than a spot to park your car
or cars? Once you determine your goals,
you will have a much better idea of the
features you would like to include in your
garage makeover, as well as the budget
you might need.

DECLUTTER
THE GARAGE

If your primary makeover goal is to bring
organization to chaos, decluttering, along
with the introduction of advanced storage
systems, could be your answer. How do
you start? Martha Stewart Living suggests
using “your driveway to sort everything
into three piles: what you want to keep,
what you can donate or sell, and what can
be discarded.” You can do this in stages,
but it’s best to try to set aside one day (or
two) to create a clean, empty space ready
for remodeling.

PAINT THE WALLS

Once your space is empty, it is time
to put your garage makeover plans in
motion. Do your garage walls need to
be revitalized? As Martha Stewart Living
points out, “a fresh coat of paint can do
wonders in transforming a messy and
unorganized garage into a clean and
orderly space.” Light colors will make the
space feel brighter and larger, but no rule
says you can’t add accent walls or patterns
to garage walls. It’s a space you are likely
to spend time in every day – make it a
place that you enjoy seeing.

LIFE & LEISURE

ASSESS THE
FLOORING

Do you spend a lot of time in the garage
either working on the cars, crafting,
sculpting, painting or pursuing other
hobbies? If so, you may want to take
this opportunity to replace all or some
of the flooring. Among the favorites is
G-Floor, which is thought to be warmer,
cushioned, durable and still grounded.
Are you converting your space to give it
a showroom feel? Think about changing
the flooring to something high-end, with
a gloss to it. You will still have to deal with
the occasional oil spills, but custom tiles
and marble floors in super garages are
just a few of the luxury options. Want
something genuinely high tech? LED
lights in the floor connected to motion
light detectors will definitely make a
statement.

ADD AN
ORGANIZATION
SYSTEM

If you do not have an organization system
already in place, your garage makeover
is the perfect time to get one installed.
Decide if you want your items on display
or if you want them hidden from view, yet
accessible. For those who do not want
to see each item, consider putting in a
wall of built-in cabinetry. This way, your
pieces can be stored on shelves or in clear,
labeled plastic bins, making them easy to
find. Once they are stored, you can close
the doors, giving the space an almost
minimalist appearance.

Are you creating the ultimate sports
garage during your makeover? The space
can get tight when you are trying to park
cars and store your bikes, kayaks, baseball
bats and other gear. Ceiling mounts or
stacked wall mounts are ideal for getting
bikes up off the floor. Likewise, kayaks can
be suspended with motorized mounts that
raise and lower at a press of the button
