I received this Letter during the Annual Women’s Conference at my church and I couldn’t wait to share it
with other Princesses! You probably already know Jeremiah 29:11 but I especially appreciated how it
was used in this Letter and thought you might as well; (Letter 4 of a Set of 5).

The South Central District Conference
Perspectives, Awards & Photos - In Review

South Central District Conference from Two Different Perspectives

The conference from my perspective, as a member that attended - without a role to play, was great. Notwithstanding the
fact that the conference was scaled-down a bit due to our upcoming National Convention in Fort Worth in July.
I had the privilege and opportunity to enjoy seeing all of our leaders beautifully serve in all of the various capacities from
our Governor, Patricia Maples to our Vice Governor Terri O. Ford, to our many, many other elected Officers and Volunteers
who contributed their valued time to make the Conference a great experience.
I also enjoyed the skills of our gifted Vocal Arts Contestants, I enjoyed being entertained by our talented Youth; at our
Luncheon, I joined being just a small morsel in the sea of Red & Yellow “Eye Candy” in the Great Room at the East Dallas
Christian Church, I was thoroughly entertained by the smooth, soulful voice of Jazz Musician Martha Burks & her Band, I
enjoyed hearing the amazing stories of our Honorees, I enjoyed seeing deserving South Central District Club Sisters, Youth,
& Ombudsmen receive recognition for her (& his) work. Although it was rather cold and it took a while to coordinate, I
enjoyed the laughs and networking we had while being positioned for our Massive group photo. So, all of that being said, I
thought it was a Great Success!

Geneva Hamilton

The Conference was different for me. I helped with the Registration and Credentials. This area was very busy with Club
Sisters registering and being credentialed. It was so busy, that we were not able to attend any of the breakout sessions.
Sometimes the area became so crowded that we had to organize a ‘new system’ to clear the area. We had four Club Sisters
to help reduce the waiting time by having their badges and ribbons ready after being credentialed. Systems work!
We were, however, able to go outside to participate in the group picture and enjoy the luncheon. The large group of
participants at photo session took a little longer because the groups had to be organized. The Groups were able to see Club
Sisters they had not seen for a long time and say hello. This was a great networking event.
The events we did get the opportunity to attend, like the Vocal Arts, were very good. We had some good contestants. It is
good for our Youth to see other young people being engaged … developing and sharing their vocal talents, singing in the
various tones and languages. The Youth listened and were very attentive even though they probably didn’t know exactly
what the contestants were saying in their songs or the languages being spoken, they had the experience of seeing the vast
possibilities.

Emergency Preparedness – Get Ready, Stay Ready!

Natural Disasters, Terrorist, Pandemic, Technological, & Accidental Hazards

The North Texas Business & Professional Women’s League, Inc. proudly sponsored a presentation by the Dallas Office of Emergency
Management (OEM) at the Young Men’s Leadership Academy (YMLA) during the monthly “Coffee with the Principal” program which
includes parents and community members in the Pleasant Grove area. Throughout the presentation, the parents/community members
actively participated in various emergency scenarios with knowledgeable input. One parent expressed an interest in taking certification
classes as a follow up to our session.

The focus of the OEM presentation was to educate and provide personal and community awareness of Emergency Preparedness activities
in order to protect life and property during various emergencies: Natural Disasters, Terrorist, Pandemic, Technological, & Accidental
Hazards. The OEM provides a flexible emergency management structure dedicated to the safety and welfare of the public through the
preservation of life, health, property, and the environment.

North Texas Food Bank Visits

On the road to the North Texas Food Bank, two young men met for
the first time and began to talk. Brailyn has volunteered at the
Food Bank before, so he was telling his new friend, Reagan, how
much fun he has volunteering for the Food Bank. Brailyn told
Reagan he would have fun too, Reagan said ok we will see.

While working on the distribution line side by side, they were
talking and helping each other to fill the boxes. They helped the
Food Bank package: 7 pallets, 336 boxes, 10,080 pounds and 8,400
meals for the community.

At the end of their volunteering time, Brailyn asked Reagan how he
liked working on the distribution line. Reagan said he had fun and
Brailyn said “I told you you would have fun”. This is a perfect
example of how Volunteering to help others not only helps the
needy but it can also be a great resource for finding a new a friend
to have FUN with. The two North Texas League Club Sisters just
laughed at the sight of their grandsons having so much fun while
helping others.

2017 Women’s History & Founder’s Day Program

“Our History Is Our Strength”

On Sunday, March 26, 2017, the North Texas Business and Professional Women's League presented "A Forum Revealing
Hidden Figures in Labor Positions and Labor Related Businesses”. The event was held at the Dallas County Schools
Technology and Training Center in Dallas, TX.

The Founders Day Program started with the National Founders' Day Observance. Tunita Bailey, Melody Burks, Michelle
Caldwell, Chandra Ferrell, Stephany Tolbert-Green Cassandra Tribbie-Watkins were the Observance Participants honoring
the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women's Club, Inc.'s Founders. The observance of the club's
National Founders gave our guests an insight into the core of what the NTL members and founders set out to accomplish
through an initiative of community services and giving back. We also had an opportunity to highlight some of the North
Texas League’s community initiative programs and services.

On this day President and past Presidents of the NTL were honored during the Circle of Infinity Recognition Program. Dr.
Terri O. Ford, Vice Governor of the South Central District presented the awards.

The Women's History Founders' Day Program also presented Ms. Emma Rodgers with the 2017 Sojourner Truth Award. Ms.
Rodgers was not able to attend in person, but our guests were able to see the award presentation via a taped video
presentation. The video showed our awardee, Ms. Emma Rodgers accepting the 2017 Sojourner Truth Award from National
First VP, Dr. Laverne Holyfield at a ceremony held at the Martin Luther King Center on March 13, 2017. The NTL during the
ceremony introduced the Emma Rodgers Scholarship. The fundraiser was a great success with guests and club sisters
purchasing raffle tickets for an opportunity to win two beautiful gift baskets donated by Club Sister Melody Burks and an
assortment of Mary Kay products donated by Club Sister Viveca Wilson.

The program was not all "pomp and circumstance", members of the youth group presented a very moving praise dance
routine. The dance group included Keana Turner, Lauren Jones, Kennedi Gossip, Kamariah Simmons and Khalvin Harrison.
Not only did we have the opportunity to see members of our Youth Club perform, we also had a very heart rendering
performance from Sierra Jones, the 2017 Oratory Champion of Dallas Independent School District, the MLK Jr. Oratorical
Competition Winner.

The highlight of the program was focused on our guests in attendance. Club Sister Marilyn Calhoun was the visionary and
guidance behind the theme of the Women's Founders' Day Program "Our History is Our Strength". She was also the
Moderator of the program and started it by introducing our guest speakers Jzacqu Field-Sellers, a Certified, Strategic Human
Resources professional and Camille Avant, a 3-year associate attorney with the law firm of Clouse Dunn. Both guests gave
the audience a brief introduction regarding their personal background and shared what they do in their professional
careers. Club Sister Calhoun encouraged both speakers to share with our guests their expertise and knowledge regarding
employment and interactions of a corporate entity policies in the Human Resource department. Our guests was then given
an opportunity to ask questions.

The program was enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

2017 Sojourner Truth Awardee Mrs. Emma S. Rodgers

The highest national award of the National Association of
Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. is
named after Sojourner Truth and is presented to a woman
who has given outstanding community service beyond the
call of duty. Because Mrs. Emma Rodgers has served the
greater Dallas community well and spoken her “Truth,”
The "North Texas BPW League, Inc. of the NANBPWC,
INC." presents the 2017 Sojourner Truth Award to her and
a 2017 Scholarship in the name of the honoree.

In 1977 Emma Rodgers and a colleague started up a mail-order business, selling books because they felt that there was a
need for black books to be available for the community. A few years later, they opened Black Images Book & Resource
Center in Wynnewood Shopping Center.

The business flourished for 30 years, serving the neighborhood as well as Dallas ISD, for which they ordered books, and
major corporate clients. They closed Black Images in January 2007. But Rodgers, keeps herself busy in retirement.

Emma works on the City Plan Commission; she is a board member for the TeCo Theater, where the Emma Rodgers Learning
Laboratory was dedicated in her honor. The learning lab is located on the second floor of the Bishop Arts Theater Center on
Tyler Street in Dallas, and during the summer she teaches a class at the day camp there. She facilitates a monthly book club
at Charlton Methodist hospital. She volunteers as a publicist for the annual Irma P. Hall Theater Arts Festival. And she is the
founder of Romance Slam Jam, an annual literary conference that brings readers and romance writers together. Emma is a
volunteer at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Museum at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2922 Martin Luther King Jr.
Blvd.

The cause that’s closest to her heart, however, is ROPP Inc., a six-year enrichment program for teenage girls. Every other
year, she organizes and guides a trip for the girls to Ghana, West Africa. Emma Rodgers is a cultural icon, advocate and a
trailblazer. She is totally deserving of this award.

A Sister’s Story

Dr. Jeanine Thomas

On Sunday, January 16, 2000 the Star Telegram featured an article on a new doctor in
town, Dr. Jeanine Thomas. The thing that fascinated them about this new doctor was not
just that she had opened a new health care clinic in South Arlington; it was the approach
she was taking. She planned some innovative new approaches aimed at satisfying her
patients’ needs. One of the approaches that she put into practice was House Calls, which
sounds new but is not really new at all; it is just an “old fashioned” approach to a practice
that was used for years in the past. Currently, the practice of seeing patients in their
home, is becoming a more common practice. When Dr. Thomas decided to start the home
visit service, she realized that some of her patients were elderly and not able to come to
the office for their appointments. She decided to take her services to the elderly instead.
She was actually labeled “the first doctor in Tarrant County to officially make Home
Visits”.
As an Innovative Internal Medicine Doctor in Arlington, she still looks for new and exciting
ways to deliver services to her patients. She considers the natural approach and the most
effective approach to health care. She looks for opportunities to give her patients the best
overall health care. But, most of all, she still finds time to make House Calls.
In 1987 Dr. Thomas was recognized as Good House Keeping Magazine’s “100 Women of
Promise”, and was featured in the July 1987 issue of the magazine. Since that time, she
has continued to receive numerous accolades from such organizations as Alpha Kappa
Alpha for her community service; Novartis Pharmaceutical Company for her community
service; and The Altrusa Southeast Tarrant County Early Risers, for her work in the
community. She has raised over $15,000 for such organizations as the Susan G. Komen
Breast Cancer Organization; the Leukemia Lymphoma Organization and the March of
Dimes. Despite her busy schedule she still manages to volunteer for various churches in
the community to assist with educating young women and men in health care education.
She is always interested in learning and continues her education with a recent Master’s
Degree in Human Services with a specialty in Counseling Studies and is currently working
on a Master's Degree in Health Care Administration. She is bilingual, speaking Spanish
fluently and has been an exchange student in both Brazil and Spain. She sees her practice
of medicine as her “calling”
The North Texas B&PW League is very fortunate that Dr. Thomas attended one of our
events and decided to join forces with our club as we continue our mission to make a
positive difference in our community. We look forward to her bringing that same
forward-thinking and creative energy to the League as our incoming club President for the
2017-19 Term.
