without allowing sufficient recovery time.

Association of Cape Cod At a time when countless college graduates are finding they are underemployed and saddled with
crushing student debt, it is time for educators and policymakers to reexamine the widely held belief
that a college degree represents the only road to success.

The building trades offer a great career path. Regrettably, fewer students are seeking careers in the
construction industry because many parents and guidance counselors are steering them toward a
college pathway rather than a vocational route.

This is particularly unfortunate, given the shortage of skilled workers in the residential construction
industry and the fact that carpenters, electricians, framers, roofers and others in the field earn good
salaries and express high job satisfaction.

We’re dealing with many of the same issues here on Cape Cod. Builders have experienced delays in
completing homes, and in some cases have had to cancel projects due to a shortage of workers. When
builders are unable to find skilled, experienced trade professionals, it means that buyers are unable
to move into their home on time. These delays and production logjams add time to a project and,
therefore, cost.

Our association is addressing this problem by hosting hundreds of high school students at the Cape-
wide Residential Construction Career Day, which mentors students in our local student chapters, and
helps them to explore opportunities in an apprenticeship program.

We’re proud to count among our partners many of the Cape’s high schools, including the vocational-
technical schools and Cape Cod Community College. It is incredibly impressive to experience the
instructors’ and administrators’ commitment to the future of their students. They understand that in
many cases a vocational education and on-the-job experience is just as worthwhile as a conventional
four-year college and that both routes offer satisfying career paths and financial gains.
