either were feeling more comfortable that the real estate market

They were thinking, ‘How many more summers can we pass up on
Cape Cod with the children and grandchildren?’”

Murphy said, “The big thing is a lot of people who have the
resources to buy a home on Cape Cod are more comfortable with
where the economy is going and that the real estate situation is
more stable. These people are getting back in the real estate mar-
ket and are able to buy lovely properties at reasonable prices. In
addition, this winter, being as mild as it is, has resulted in people
thinking about spring and summer and has made it easy for them
to come down for a day or a weekend to look at property.”

As far as consumer confidence,
Grassia added, “People have adjusted to

According to Michael J. Degnan,
principal, Realty Executives of Cape Cod,
“I have found buyers are recognizing the
attractiveness of the marketplace. Low
interest rates and a general feeling that we

values have aided this response.

“Even with the attractive low inter-

I believe this is a further indication that
some consumers feel we are approaching

Solar-electric systems usually re-
quire an inverter to be installed to convert
direct current from the solar panels to
alternating current used in the home. But
newer systems now include micro-invert-
ers in each solar panel. The latest systems
also are denser, meaning more electricity
can be generated from the same roof area.

A grid-tied system connects to the
electric utility, allowing excess rooftop-
generated electricity to be sold back to
the utility company. With solar power
from the roof, electricity bills should be
significantly lower, especially in the sum-
mer when the days are longer.

Jason Stoots, president and founder
of E2 Solar in Hyannis and a NABCEP

ergy Practitioners) photovoltaic installer,
explains.

remodels and additions, often kitchens, family rooms and mud
rooms, but also whole houses, porches and decks. Usually it
involves opening up walls to create more open living spaces as well
as connections to the outdoors. We see a lot people really wanting
to make a house work better for them. They’ve lived in the house
a certain number of years, or it’s a second home and they are
thinking about retiring here or making the home more livable for
their kids or grandkids.

We make our own trim, woodwork and cabinetry in shop,
and we integrate the finish work into the home. The term artisan
builders reflects our love of the craft and our attention to detail.

With three employees, we’re small and we are able provide
a great level of attention. When people hire me they get me.
That’s a real selling point to a lot of people. It’s a really hands-on
process.

Certainly, to come to the Cape and start a business, being
unknown and starting from scratch, trying to build our name and
reputation, has been both challenging and rewarding. It has gone
well for us, with steady improvement. The phone is ringing more
and the projects are getting a bit bigger. People may have been sit-
ting on the fence for awhile but the market is opening up.

It was a good move for us. It’s a great place to raise our

relationship with vendors. When a client can’t get somebody to
do the work, we can. If we call one of the electricians we work
with, they will be there on a moment’s notice for an emergency
call. Or they will be there to install an emergency generator. We
know it will be done properly.

We are distributors for a whole-house dehumidification
system, to help get rid of that musty Cape Cod basement smell.
We have installed about 75 of these Therma-Stor high-moisture
removal systems in the past three years. It’s just another piece of
the big picture that we can bring in as a solution to a problem.

And we are distributors for a battery backup system called
iPower. We have it at our office. We run our computer servers,
heating, lighting and refrigeration through an inverter to smooth
out spikes in voltage or brownouts that reduce voltage, which can
damage sensitive electronic equipment. The system also provides
power for a couple of days in case of an outage.

We’ve been in business for over 25 years. We grew slowly
one person at a time and we’re very selective about who we hire.
It is a closely held-family business. One common thread is similar
values. We all have a mindset to do it right the first time. Our
motto is ‘Perfect is close enough.’ We’re not in it for a short term
fix. We serve clients who want something done right, so they will
not have to deal with it again for 20 years.

• Install irrigation systems that use drip
subsurface systems and rain sensors

• Decrease impermeable surfaces like
