A LOOK BACK ON 50 YEARS
Henry Maier, inspired by a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, envisioned a festival that would bring the community together while providing low cost entertainment and revitalizing Milwaukee’s downtown.
The inaugural Summerfest was held in 1968 at 35 separate locations and expanded to 60 in its second year. Summerfest later took over the abandoned 15-acre Nike missile site on Milwaukee’s lakefront in 1970.
The Summerfest smile logo, which is still used, was adopted by the festival in 1970.
Milwaukee’s famous breweries – Miller, Schlitz and Pabst – were all early supporters of Summerfest and eventually each brand had a stage at Henry Maier Festival Park.
For decades, a full carnival featuring amusement rides, games, live animal shows and other attractions were part of the Summerfest experience.
Venice Club opens on the grounds in 1974, introducing its french fried eggplant to Milwaukee. Major Goolsby’s joined the grounds in 1975. Both still operate at Summerfest today.

Summerfest ran an annual body building competition during the 1980s called the “Mr. Summerfest Body Building Competition”
Throughout the 1980s Summerfest held a
the shores of Lake Michigan.
In 1987, The Washington
band to play in the newly built Amphitheater, open- ing for the Beach Boys. Seats in the Amphitheater were still being installed the day before the venue opened.
The 1990s saw annual skateboarding competitions at the festival.
Despite cancelling the majority of their 1995 tour due to an iconic battle with Ticketmaster,
low tickets cost and fees.
In the 2000’s Summerfest hosted legendary acts such as Prince, The Grateful Dead, Rush, Bon Jovi, KISS and Fleetwood Mac.
In 2015, The Rolling Stones played The Marcus Amphitheater, the smallest venue on their tour, because of its intimate setting.
Summerfest earned the title of “The World’s Largest Music Festival” from the Guinness Book of World Records in 1999.
