Welcome to Hammond Parks & Recreation

Residents of Hammond and surrounding communities:

Mayor's Thank you for your interest in the City of Hammond's 2019 Fall

Mission is to enhance the quality
Over the past couple of years, the city has embarked on several exciting new
of life and community pride by renovations in our parks, including a complete renovation of Edison Park, and a newly
continuing to provide and maintain updated Hessville park that includes a water feature and skate park.  Our newest
renovation is Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, which is currently in the middle of
safe, accessible and affordable multi- phased improvements. The first phase with updated and new basketball
parks, facilities and recreation courts, fitness equipment and a hoop tree opened in June. The second phase is
under construction and will include an interactive water feature, updated
programs that fulfill the physical, playground, walking path, additional parking, shelter improvements and an eternal
mental, social, cultural and leisure flame.
needs of Hammond residents and
Other upgrades include Columbia Park, Dowling Park and Indi-Illi park.
visitors to our community. Park renovations and upgrades offer increased recreational opportunities for
our city residents and visitors, while encouraging healthy lifestyles in safe and
modern environments. The open spaces also increase property values in the
surrounding areas. More upgrades and improvements are planned so make sure to
follow the city and park department on social media and at gohammond.com for
more information.

Don't forget to save the date for our upcoming events this year and next on your
calendar. From our exciting Hammond parades (the Veterans’ Day Parade on
November 9th and the Holiday Parade on December 7th) to my personal favorite
219 Day (set for February 15, 2020 at the Civic Center!).

Finally, I want to extend a warm thank you to our hard working staff and employees
of the City of Hammond and our amazing community who are a huge part of why
Hammond is full of recreational fun and opportunity. Have a great fall season
enjoying all Hammond has to offer!

Thomas M. McDermott Jr.
