Issiakhem n’a pu vraiment dialoguer

Cela suff it à compliquer le problème

Je me suis

10 septembre [1928 Alger]
Il fait pas mal chaud. Mais c’est supportable. On commence demain.

casbah. Toujours le même intérêt. J’étais fatigué. Cette promenade
m’a reposé.

27 juin 2012
Après-midi chez Djamila Issiakhem. Elle a été géniale, très généreuse. M’a longuement

histoire, on me l’a racontée.
vraiment l’exprimer on dirait. Et il me dirige vers le musée.

16 sept 2012

Issiakhem.

22 oct 2012

Karim a pu m’y introduire
conclusion « la démolition de la partie supérieure ».

Je me demande encore

LANDOWSKI, ISSIAKHEM AND I

On 11th November 1928, Paul Landowski
unveiled his Monument to the Dead, imposing
sculpture proudly positioned in central Algiers.
Fifty years later, the authorities of my country
appointed M’hamed Issiakhem to «hide this
offending sculpture». This was on the occasion
of the African Games in 1978. Highly intrigued
by this story, I created Enclosed in 2013, a work
that explores this silent dialogue between two
artists that left a strong imprint in Algiers.
As the third generation of artists to dialogue with
this public monument, I have chosen to place
the works of both artists in echo. Issiakhem
couldn’t really dialogue with Landowski or
his work because he had the obligation to
cover it. By revisiting this singular gesture,
I draw attention to this interlocked memory by
underlining discreet realities, unseen details,
creating links where dots were left…

4 January 1921
Bigonet came in the evening for the Algiers competition.
There are more than 4,000 names to register. This is enough to
complicate the problem and make the competition unappealing.

28 [February[1921]
Yesterday morning, worked with Bigonet on the small model for
the Algiers sculpture. Our core group is f inalised. Now I’ll
summon Maurice Gras, so that our architects do not start the work
too late and that their presentation is neat.
I think this idea of having the body carried by three equestrian
f igures, three equestrian caryatids, may prove appealing. In any
case, the effect is considerable, even on the minute sketch that
I made. The idea of having a winged Victory horse as t he central
f igure gives strength to the whole, with the wings forming a
solid support. This sumptuous and heroic character will do well
under the African sun.

8 March [1921]
In the afternoon, we worked with Bigonet, Maurice Gras and
Monastes on the sketch for the Algiers competition. Solution
found: my idea of D eath triumphantly carried by three horsemen
was agreed without hesitation. Persistence is the sculptor’s main
quality.

17 [October 1921]
Simonin told me that Gaudissart is in a state of indescribable
fury because I am in the Algiers competition. He is angry with
me beyond reason! Poor Gaudissart. Among his imprecations was to
blame me for working like a negro! Obviously I’m a big scoundrel.

2 [December 1921]
At Maurice Gras’s place, working on the base for the Algiers
competition: we are really very nearly there with it. The
same certainly cannot be said for the group. I’m less and less
enthusiastic. This is an outline sketch. In the real scale
piece, the problems appear so great that they are almost
insurmountable. And I like these symbolic winged f igures less
and less. But it is started. Must see it through.

13 [December 1921]
All day on the sketch for Algiers. It is coming on. I asked Bigonet
to pose for me. I put the odd burnous on him, and a djellaba, and
the spahi looks good. Tomorrow I will sort out the other rider.
Taillens came at the end of the day and was greatly impressed.

26 December 1921]
Went by Monestès’s place at the end of the day, where we decided
to reduce the whole central motif of the Algiers Monument. The
base is not yet suitable. It is too large. Or, if we kept its current
size, we should have followed my idea and sculpted it entirely
from the bottom upwards. I fear greatly that the out-of-scale
base will mean we are unsuccessful.

30 January 1922
Received letter from Bigonet about Algiers. My prediction: we
will not win.

18 [February 1922
I had predicted wrongly for the Algiers competition. Our project
won. So here I am with a wonderful new undertaking on my hands
to sort out.

27 [February 1922]
I get a letter from Bigonet in Algiers, telling me that the
famous Gaudissard is protesting against the competition
decision, has written a letter to the selection committee and
published articles in the Algerian press in which, using his
friends’s name as authors, he slates our project, those of other
competitors and champions his own plan. I am determined not to
let that get to me. I’ve never felt sympathy for this Gaudissard.
He always worries me. I have always been very reserved about him.
I was not mistaken in not considering him to be a good fellow.

9 [March 1922]
Phone call from Maurice Gras. Monestès met Boutrin, who
informed him that the Algiers competition decision had been
annulled. We have had no news from Bigonet. Also, it seems, in
the message that Boutrin apparently received from the young
Besse, the awarding committee has decided to allow a postal vote
for the new decision. I was def initely right in predicting that
the competition would not be a success. Monestès, who came to see
me earlier, told me that f ive or six months ago, he met a young
Algerian architect. Speaking of the contest, this man said: ‘''You
may win the competition. But you won’t be able to create the
monument. They would sooner kill you!'' ‘

25 [March 1922]
Dispatch from Bigonet. The Algiers project has been won a second
time over. The selection committee members have behaved wisely.
This time sixteen of the twenty votes went to us. Certainly I was
the one who got it wrong.

28 [November 1925]
As I predicted, it’s very diff icult to turn the sketch for Algiers
into reality. Problems implementing the plans arise at every
moment.

22 [December 1925]
I am starting to be happy with the sketch for Algiers, or the
study rather, it is more than [just] a sketch. Diff icult!

16 November [1926]
I have f inally found the arrangement for the rear group of the
Algiers monument. Unity of feeling. The two women embrace. The
two old men, the European and the Arab, lean on each other. The
unity of feeling has created a pleasing artistic effect. Resumed
work on the Victory. Reduced the head. In its current size, its
smallness seems exaggerated. In its true size it will be good.
Horses do not look very good. A little too rounded and lacking in
contrast. They need to be more natural.

16 [January 1927]
Good session working on the rear group of the Algiers monument.
The European f igure is coming on well. This group alone
constitutes a monument in itself. The two female f igures are
behind schedule, although their composition has been found.

10 September [1928 Algiers]
It is quite hot. But it is bearable. Will start tomorrow. We will
be in full sun, but it is necessary. Working on scaffolding in
this way is very tiring, especially now. To avoid being bothered
by the crosspieces and wood, we make do as we can. One’s whole body
is instinctively tense [as we work]. I hope by tomorrow night to
have completed the Victory - head, wings, arms and even the two
heads of her companions.

11 September [1928 Algiers]
Visit Belmondo and spend evening with him. Walk in the Casbah.
Always the same interest. I was tired. This walk rested me.
Belmondo said - and he seemed sincere - that Saint Geneviève,
placed as it is was, had very much impressed him.

9 [Algiers in November 1928]
It is a pleasure to be back here, with Lily and Nadine. The
crossing was abominable. I got seasick! I held up as best I could.
To get to the Albert Hotel, the driver took the boulevards by
the seafront, so that Lily and Nadine could see the monument
straight away. From afar, looks very good. The area immediately

around it is completed. At the hotel, we were given two beautiful
bedrooms that overlook it. Plunging view down on the monument.
The architectural weakness of the staircase is clearly visible.
This area of greenery is absurd. Architects are very complicated
people. Most do not know how to use the sculpture. The two we had
were particularly poor.
Once settled in, we went down and had a look up close. I have big
regrets. In particular, there is a poorly-f inished right foreleg
on the French cavalryman’s horse.

10 [November 1928 Algiers]
At the city hall. As the mayor’s secretary was speaking about
the steps to be extended up to the monument, the idiot Gras said
smugly: ‘''but this is not our view''’.
I could not help but immediately protest against this
impropriety.
Those architects are a dead weight. But we still shook hands
before leaving.
After lunch, we went to Brouty’s. He is back from the M’Zab and
Ghardaia and spoke enthusiastically of his trip. He showed us
very good pen-and-ink drawings from it. When I expressed our
wish to go for a walk in the Casbah, he immediately made himself
available to us.

13 [November 1928 Algiers]
Madame Favre brings me a beautiful signed copy of Bab El Oued.

14 [November 1928 Algiers]
Dinner with the lawyer Rey, where we f ind Halagar. We speak of
the competition result tomorrow. I give Rey the same advice
I gave the Exhibition’s General Commissioner earlier today:
base your judgements on the models alone; proceed by elimination.
Like that, it is impossible for any undue influence to succeed,
and you will have no surprises to fear. Success for Bouchard is
certain. His project is not extraordinary. He could have made
something with much more emotional effect. But Bouchard’s
project is nonetheless the best. Leaving tomorrow.
When I will return to Africa?

17 March 2012
This morning I was talking to Karim about “Chrysanthemums”; about the fact that
I want to extend my research on monuments to the one in the garden of the Floral
Clock, in Avenue Pasteur. That was when he told me that a crack had appeared on the
“sarcophagus”.
This information came to me like a bombshell! I immediately made a detour by car to
see for myself. And yes, there was a beautiful crack, wide open on the front, above the
arms breaking the chains!

18 March 2012
I can’t stop thinking about what I saw yesterday. It is just unbelievable that that crack
has appeared during the fiftieth anniversary of independence. There is no coincidence
in life. I took a picture from afar, from the car.

23 March 2012
I do not know if I’m imagining things, but I think I see light through the crack. That’s it, I
have decided, I dive into the breach, this will become an artwork!

19 April 2012
Caroline has confirmed her invitation to the exhibition in Dublin, and its subject
linking the two countries, their independence, decolonising the landscape. We talked
a lot, she loves the project, it fits really well in the exhibition. I accelerate research. I
would like to make a third sculpture, a print of this crack, and to re-contextualize as a
consequence.

20 May 2012
Another article in El Watan ! But obviously he only mentions about “saving the Issiakhem
monument”, the other is only mentioned as an anecdote.

3 June 2012
I took pictures, nothing has changed. They talk about restoring it before July 5, but I
doubt they will. I must take my imprint before that. Karim will introduce me to the APC.

27 June 2012
Afternoon at Djamila Issiakhem’s home. She was great, very generous. She spoke at length
about her cousin and showed a photograph of him in an apron in front of the scaffoldings
during construction. Incredible! And she also gave me a very good key: that Issiakhem was
a resistance fighter before being the artist, and duty to the country was more than a priority.
Surely I now have the the best explanation. But otherwise, no material or document or
drawing, nothing. She told me that he never made preparatory drawings. I must see her again.

28 June 2012
I go back to see the monument: still nothing, however, July 5th is fast approaching.
The renovation will never be ready....

30 June 2012
Still nothing. I submitted a dossier to the APC, I have a good hose but I have to wait.
Maybe it will happen.

1 July 2012
This morning passed by. Still nothing. I have a feeling nothing will happen. But in the
meantime, I saw the guy from APC fleetingly, and he confirmed that I could not do
anything, touch anything and that this is a problem that is beyond them. They don’t even
know how to face July 5th. Obviously, I was given the usual “l’fouk”, and therefore the
decision is not theirs... bla bla bla... as ever.

4 July 2012
Installation of scaffoldings around the monument! So this is the solution, at least they are
making it look like they are doing something, it gives them time.

5 July 2012
Official launch of the website missiakhem.net. I finally know where to find first hand
information. I am more and more passionate about this research. I never thought I would
one day work on Issiakhem. It is incredible to remember that at a certain point I couldn’t
bear him anymore!! We have always been force fed Issiakhem and, poor thing, he has
become an apparatchick without wanting to be. Thankfully, I am rediscovering him.

18 July 2012
Apparently they are really going to begin restoration work. They just installed a tarpaulin
around it. I took a picture of this too. But I’m so frustrated, every time I get spotted by the
police.
4 August 2012

I send you the
monuments
in a dress!

Abd El Kader as
well as Issiakhem

is receiving
a facelift. We’ll
see what it all

looks like.

For several weeks, the city
of Algiers has begun work
cleaning the statue of Emir
Abdelkader that stands proud
on the eponymous square.
And this occurs on the occasion
of the fiftieth anniversary of
independence.The result once
the scaffolding removed:

catastrophe.This did not
escape the Emir Abdelkader
Foundation who denounced the
choice of “repulsive paint”
in a statement on Monday.

A firm clarification was addressed by
the person in charge of restoring the
equestrian statue of Emir Abdelkader
in the centre of Algiers, to the Emir

Abdelkader Foundation, who had
denounced the result of the cleaning

work on the statue in a statement
Monday. According to this him, the

bronze work was “cleaned” and
covered with a “protective colourless

varnish” and not coated with paint.

30 August 2012
I was able to collect beautiful postcards and I found a wonderful stamp dating 1952.
Unbelievable to find, on the back of the 1939 card, a message that speaks of the war, of
the prevailing atmosphere. It dates from May 39, and the postcard commemorates the
victims of the first war. How ominous, what a coincidence!

3 Sept 2012
I went to see the monument, I could not believe my eyes! You can see through to the
Landowski! Entire pieces of the casing fell, so you can see the horses, the rider, the
goddess. The stone is pink, intact, I would have thought that it would be wormy, rusty,
but it looks well preserved.

4 Sept 2012
I took fascinating pictures, I zoomed in and I was able to get some details. Better than
nothing. I don’t think I will be able to get anything better. Even today I had to negotiate
with the cops

16 Sept 2012
I still wander in the garden to collect opinions, and this morning there was a woman
who said: “this is amazing! Why they hide this from us ?! They could move the “box” to
the right and leave the two sculptures side by side, with a text in the middle that would
tell this story”. It’s a great idea I think. Another guy made m e laugh by telling me that
I was wasting my time. And hey ... it’s been ages. It’s behind. We can ask anyone you
want, especially the young ones: they really do not care. They do not even see it, they
don’t care about the before and after of political issues. They do not even see it!

3 Oct 2012
The restoration work is not progressing at all. The site has come to a full stop (in fact
it looks abandoned). I think they really have to make a decision with respect to the
Issiakhem part.
A passerby said: Issiakhem built a sarcophagus. He made them a “Stalinist thing” which
bears witness to the mentality of those who would have destroyed the statue.

22 Oct 2012
Since the beginning of the project, it seems there are no coincidences. Today, an old
man whispered over my shoulder: do you know what this garden used to be called? And
what it is called today? And who had called it the Ouamrane Garden ? President Chadli.
I am the Ouamrane’s nephew and I went to war too, I know what I am talking about. But
later, they decided to remove this name. Why? Probably because hewas Kabyle!

9 Nov 2012
I finally saw the director of the APC of the center of Algiers. Karim was able to introduce
me before his meeting. The crop is thin: there are no record or archival documents.
He himself had internet pictures. But at least there was still a CTC report dating July
2008, which noted a deterioration of the overhang and concluded on “the demolition
of the upper part.” I wanted to make a copy, but he did not let me. He told me that the
company that was renovating no longer wanted to continue the work, they were losing
money. The whole top of the monument was collapsing, and they couldn’t keep up.
And he added: thank God, I didn’t look after the Emir Abd El Kader renovation! I knew !
10 Nov 2012
I reconstituted by hand, as best I could, Issiakhem’s coffering. I made a plan and section
plan, at least I have a clearer vision, sth technical to work with.
23 Nov 2012
Afternoon at Bourdine’s. He was great, he told me everything. Valuable interview, I have
to shorten it a little, but nothing should be removed. I really have the whole context!
The work to beautify the city of Algiers, the welcome signs, large frescoes with the
raised fist, the agrarian revolution, everything.
25 Nov 2012
Visit of the Landowski Museum-Garden. Gorgeous. His studio with his models, and his
garden with his sculptures. To think that it is threatened with closure. I found a model of
the monument! oh waow, if I could borrow that, it would be great.
27 Nov 2012
First trip to Dublin: well, ok, now I understand what people feel when they arrive in
Algiers: so disappointingly French! I find Dublin really English, physically it is rather
disturbing. Algeria/ Ireland, same battle! I took pictures of all the statues in the city. And
I finally saw the location of the Nelson Pillar. In fact, it couldn’t be otherwise. It is best
that it has now become urban furniture. Which artist could go through this again?

Visit to the 1930s museum where treasures are found. The archivist has prepared many
things: great! There are photographs, preparatory drawings, photographs of models,
his diary. There also other documents relating to Algeria, in one way or the other.
Caroline will perhaps come back, but I think we can do everything by email. I still have
difficulties to find information on the Algerian side. The 2 vitrines will be unbalanced.
But I’ve read that there were things in the Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers, including
drawings by Charles Bigonet.

8 Dec 2012
Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers: a “Kafkaesque” moment, I can’t believe it. The librarian
was completely out of it, I repeated 3 times the name Issiakhem. I must be dreaming!
and he found nothing, then yes: there are catalogues, then the box is not there. For
Bigonet, the librarian told me she “had seen this name in and there,” but nothing
more. I struggled to convince them to let me look for myself. And I left empty-handed,
shoulders arched. A big disappointment. Where is his legacy really? where can I find
organized, structured info, aside from his family, friends and fragments through word-
of-mouth? I went back on his website, and I understood his son’s bitterness in the
editorial: tired of all folklore around his father, tired of him being selfishly reclaimed
by others. It is the Issiakhem monument that is collapsing, not the Monument of the
Avenue Pasteur ;(

16 Dec 2013
I was finally able take the photo of the last list of names. I still wonder why it has not
been deleted or removed, in particular since there are French names, it’s not as if these
were Algerian names. I don’t know.

5 Jan 2013
That’s it, I return to Dublin for the installation of the exhibition. It feels so strange.
I finally lay everything flat, and the two artists are together as I had dreamt.

10 Jan 2013
The opening was great. Totally packed! Reactions were good, very generous. But above
all, I appreciated that people found a lot of resonance with Ireland. We are on the same
path of regaining ourselves. We went to the pub to celebrate it all around some well
deserved Guiness.
When I will return to Ireland?

Tell us about the work you did on the Memorial next to the Central Post Office and
does not always raise happy comments.
It was initially planned to eliminate this monument, to remove it from there. We intervened
to prevent this removal, and our job was to cover it, let us be clear. It was thus covering the
monument, hide it from view and the day when it is needed, just open the shell to retrieve
it. Above all, do not believe we did ourselves another monument instead. The work we were
asked took just one month, it had to be completed before the the African Games. And to
avoid having a naked wall, we have included this pattern in the shape of hands breaking
their chains. When we talk about this work, do not forget to consider the time factor and the
conditions that we were offered to do so. And do not see anything other than a recovery shell.
