Pride 2017 Headliner : Ultra Nate’

THE LEGENDARY DIVA, SONGWRITER AND DJ
CELEBRATING OVER TWO DECADES OF CHART‐‐‐TOPPING HITS

In her two decades of making music, Ultra Naté has remained a musical
chameleon, embracing a variety of sounds,

dance floors with the 1989 club anthem, “It’s Over
Now,” Naté stands tall and proud, proving that ar st longevity, though not
common for singers of dance music, is alive and well. Ultra Naté’s 20 +
year anniversary in the business

Italy’s hit maker
Nicola Fasano, Hometown Bal more’s DJ Class, Michelle Williams (of
Des ny’s Child) and house music innovators Todd Terry and
David Morales, Naté has also found me to ini ate a new rock/funk
project called Black Stereo Faith with the inimitable Quen n Harris.

Working hard for the money also means wearing numerous hats. Sure,
Naté is the singer of the song, but she is also a songwriter, producer, DJ
(currently holding a mixshow residency on influen al French Radio
Sta on FG alongside some of the world’s top jocks), label owner (BluFire
and 410 Paradox Underground), club promoter (the

evolu on—from one crea ve aspect of the
music scene to another. “I’ve been in this scene for a long me, so it’s
easy for me to transi on from one area to another rather seamlessly,” she
explains. “Sure, I’m s ll learning some par cular dynamics, but that’s the
fun part of the process. When you stop learning you’re doomed.”

Naté’s schooling in all things music began in the late‐‐‐’80s with her aclaimed
Warner Brothers 1990 debut album, “Blue Notes in the Basement,” which
spawned such club hits as “Scandal,” “Deeper Love” and “Rejoicing (I’ll Never
Forget).” In 1993, Naté delivered her sophomore album, “One Woman’s In‐
sanity” with its R&B undertow, clearly evident on singles like “Joy,” “How
Long,” and “Show Me,” which was the her first #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance
Club Play chart. 1997 found Ultra switching labels to Strictly Rhythm, where
she had one of the biggest successes of her career with the worldwide
pla num – selling smash single, “Free.” The anthemic track topped Bilboard’s
Hot Dance Club Play and Maxi‐‐‐Singles Sales charts before crossing
over to Top‐‐‐40/dance radio and Top 10 interna onally. The radio
and clubs couldn’t get enough so Ultra along with duet partners Amber and
Jocelyn Enriquez stormed the charts with a disco‐‐‐laced (from the ’54′′
soundtrack) rendi on of the folk/ pop staple “If You Could Read My Mind.”
Ultra release her fourth studio album, “Stranger Than Fic on” in 2001 which
found her spreading her musical wings and working with such producers as
D‐‐‐Influence, Arnthor & Bloodshy and A ca Blues as well as collabora ng
with such luminaries as Nona Hendryx, Lenny Kravitz and N’dea Davenport.
Two songs from the album, “Desire” and “Get It Up (The Feeling),” reached
#1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart, while the 4‐‐‐ Hero‐‐‐produced
sleeper hit “Twisted (Got Me Goin’ Round),” is a dj/fan favorite that
con nues to have a life all its own. In 2007, Nate’s fi h studio album,
“Grime, Silk & Thunder,” arrived via Tommy Boy Records, spawning two #1
club hits: “Give It All You Got” (featuring Chris Willis), a cover of the Pointer
Sisters’ “Automa c,” and included Naté’s 2005 collabora on with Stone‐
Bridge (“Freak On”).

Ultra Nate’ (Con nued)

Since day one, Girl has always remained steps ahead of the game, following
the beat of her own drum. New interpreta ons of her early hits “It’s Over
Now” and “Scandal”, a Kenny Dope reworking and Morgan Page’s delicious
mix of the Grace Jones‐‐‐esque “Love’s the Only Drug” were Included on
Naté’s follow up 2008 collec on, “Alchemy: G.S.T. Reloaded.” The two‐‐‐
disc set spotlights remixes of tracks from “Grime, Silk &;Thunder”—as well
as debuts Naté’s first official DJ mix. In 2010 on her own imprint BluFire,
Ultra teased fans with an e.p. and represented homestyle with a grimy
B‐‐‐more Club collabora on alongside Unruly Records. The beat laden
“Things Happen At Night” featured hometown heroes DJ Class and Sco e B
and preeminent diva Jocelyn Brown.

At the end of the day, and 20 years on, Naté’s maverick style has not
changed. It remains intact. She says her crea ve process, over the years, has
not changed either. “I s ll work in many different ways,” she explains. “I’m
very open to trying things differently.”

Ultra Naté con nues to move forward having shared the stage with the likes
of Nile Rodgers and CHIC, Johnny Marr (of The Smiths), Martha Wash, Mark
Ronson and Dimitri of Paris all the while releasing several currently smolder‐
ing releases. These include the infec ous club gem “Planet Called Love” with
David Morales (one of three exclusive collabora ons from his acclaimed
“Changes” album), a #1 collabora on with Marlon D and The Underground
Collec ve called “God’s Message”.

In 2013 Ultra released her eighth studio album "Hero Worship" featuring
collabora ons with a list of who's who in dance music.

Ultra Naté has delivered her classics and new tunes all over the globe per‐
forming everywhere from Amsterdam (for Milkshake Fes val), Paris, Lon‐
don, Japan, Moscow, Sweden, Dubai and Spain to name a few! Her spirited
presence has graced the stages of New York's massive Summer Stage in
Central Park and Nile Rodgers acclaimed FOLD Fes val sharing the stage
with the likes of CHIC, Duran Duran and Beck.

Ultra Nate’ (Con nued)

Ultra Naté is now back on the road both performing and DJ‐‐‐ing and just hit
the stages in London, Naples, Bulgaria, Brooklyn, Orlando, Denver,
San Francisco and her home away from home, Ibiza ‐‐‐ just to name a few.
With brand new music just released, and two forthcoming album projects
and high profile collabora ons slated for 2017,
Ultra Naté, your original 'party girl' is bringing the party back to you.
“I want to con nue to be in your face,” says Naté.

10 Our 2017 Grand Marshalls:
Terry Miller And Joey Burde e

Looking back on the incidental things, it appears that Terry and Joey
were meant for each other. In 2009, Joey’s Myspace.com page had a
quote referring to thri store shopping as a form of therapy. Terry
stumbled across the profile and being a collector at heart, he could‐
n’t resist. Terry sent a message asking if the two could go thri ing
some me. Their first date took place not at a thri store but a coffee
shop (a bit of foreshadowing perhaps). They fell in love and soon
renovated a condo in Raleigh, filling it with their curated thri store
finds. It wasn’t long before they adopted a poodle named Helen.
Opportunity knocked in 2012 when Terry’s employer offered a
generous reloca on package to Winston‐Salem.
The li le family jumped at the opportunity for an adventure.
Not long a er the move, Joey proposed to Terry.
In December 2012 they were married in a simple ceremony in New
York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

.

11

On their honeymoon the following spring, they rode Segway’s down
the streets of Asheville. It was so much fun that they decided
Winston‐Salem needed the something similar to show off the bur‐
geoning downtown. In 2013, Terry and Joey opened Revolu on Glid‐
ing Tours with a mission to highlight the storied architecture and
unique local businesses along the route. They saw the tours as an
opportunity to be the city’s most unique ambassador. In the first 2
years they led over 10,000 miles of tours on li le 6 mile routes. As
the tours grew more successful, a coffee shop component was added
for folks to congregate before and a er their tours.

That coffee shop is now Twin City Hive Coffee Lounge, a hive of
ac vity for the en re community. The Hive has a commitment to
locally sourced goods including items from over 20 local vendors
including North Carolina roasted coffee and teas blended in
Greensboro. The shop is fully inclusive and is meant to be
comfortable for anyone who comes through the door.

We’ve enjoyed watching WS Pride’s event grow through the past few
years and are honored to host their weekly board mee ngs.

Over the past few years, Joey and Terry have been involved with the
Winston‐Salem Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Winston‐
Salem Partnership, Winston‐Salem City University, Campaign for
Southern Equality, the New Winston Museum, as well as contributors
to many other individual chari es. They look forward to con nuing
to deepen their roots and grow within the City that has provided so

much inspira on and opportunity.

“Be proud, be happy, and love one another.”
