Alamance Today

December 2018

From the Board

by Gerry Francis, President

As you are reading thisnewsletter, I am in my last month serving as President of ACC.
But, I will not totally go away, since for 2019 I will continue on the Board of Directors serving
as Past-President. 2018 has been an interesting and productive year for ACC. We have
seen the last of the Clubhouse renovation projects completed; have planned, designed,
funded, built and opened the new Amenity Lawn; have finished the fiscal year in the black
in both operations and capital; and, in the midst of all this, hired a new General Manager.
As I said, an interesting and productive year.

For 2019 I feel the Club is in a good position and in good hands to continue its forward
momentum, but we must all always be aware that the Club’s stability is driven by membership numbers and
constant financial oversight—and that these are our responsibilities.

With the Christmas season upon us. I remind you that a fee directed to the Employees Christmas Bonus will be
added to your November bill. These funds are collected and distributed to all employees—cooks, grounds crew,
dishwashers, etc. as a way of saying thank you and have a blessed holiday season.

It has been my pleasure to serve in the President’s role for 2018. I have found my time on the Board, both as a
member and as the President, to be very beneficial to my better understanding of how the Club operates, and of
the wonderful employees we have who make our time spent at the Club so enjoyable. So, to each member and to
every employee, thanks for all you give.

New Sunday Hours and Brunch Buffet Every Sunday!

It has been a busy fall and the holiday season is ramping up! TGIF continues to be one
of our most popular nights. The once a month Sunday Brunch Buffet has seen steady growth
over the past few months. With the holiday season here and that growing popularity, we are
going to start in December having our Brunch Buffet EVERY SUNDAY! On top of that, we are
going to have an amazing spread on our Bloody Mary Bar. You will have the option to make
that Mary as spicy or as mild as you like with a wide variety of mixes, additional ingredients,
garnishes and skewers that are over the top. We hope that making the Brunch a part of
your family’s Sunday will come easily and satisfy the after-church hunger. This is an easy way to get great food
fast and with something for just about everyone.
In a an effort to make this successful, we will be limiting our menu to the Brunch Buffet only on Sundays. Our
1946 Grill A La Carte Lunch and Brunch options will be rolled into the items that we serve on the buffet. We will
be changing some of our Brunch items regularly, so if you have a favorite, please let us know and we will put it
on the schedule.
As a Food and Beverage team, we listen to what you tell us you like and don’t like. We do this by looking at
when people come out, which items are ordered, and which ingredients we seem to order more regularly. One of
the things you have told us is that Sunday nights are not your favorite time to come out to dine with us. We have
looked back at several months worth of data, and Sunday night has been the slowest night of the week. With
that information in mind, we have decided to stop serving dinner on Sunday evenings in the 1946 Grill. We know
this may not be the most popular decision for some, but it is the right decision to make for a more efficient and
robust Food and Beverage operation. If you have concerns about this, please feel free to stop by the Club, call or
e-mail me so we can discuss the matter.
As the year winds down, I would like to say “Thank You” for helping to make ACC such a fun place to be! I am
looking forward to a great December and hope to see you at a Brunch, Christmas party, or just out to dinner on a
Friday.

Membership

by Leanna Giles, Membership Director | [email protected]

According to Google, a map is a symbolic depiction emphasizing relationships between
elements of some space, such as objects, regions, or themes. We recently put all of our
members on a map. You might guess there are several members who live in the same
geographic area. I encourage you to look around at your neighbors—who lives in your
neighborhood that is not a member and invite them to consider the club. Schedule a time to
invite them out for some fun recreation (golf, pickleball, tennis, holiday activity) or dinner.
Be sure to let me know you are coming and I will provide you with all the materials. Sounds
easy enough, right? Don’t delay, we want to fill the roster for a fantastic spring.
Also, please take a moment to log-in to the website and update your member profile. We especially need
updated phone numbers and emails. Many folks are choosing to eliminate their home phones and go to cell
phones. Additionally, please be sure to let us know if you have celebrated the birth of a new child. All of this
information is very important as we are preparing to update some of our communication technology.

Event Catering

by Brittany Myers, Catering Director | [email protected]

Happy Holidays! I hope your holiday season is off to a good start, and I look forward to
working with you on your holiday party for the second year in a row. Just a reminder that we
are now taking reservations for December 2019! Be sure to call or email me as soon as you
have a date in mind, as December dates book fast!

Stumped for holiday decorating ideas? Something as simple as adding Christmas ornaments
to a glass cylinder or bowl can go a long way to create that holiday ambiance. Another idea
would be cranberries in a glass cylinder of water with a floating candle. The simplest idea
can go a long way! My favorite decoration that I have seen so far is a dining table with tall
tree branches in the center to hang ornaments from.
The best referral is word of mouth! If you have a friend, family or co-worker planning an event, please send
them our way. We love that you take pride in your Club and love to show it off. If you have anyone you know
that would be interested in touring our event facilities, please let me know!

From Tee to Green

by Peter Horn,CGCS | Director of Golf Course and Grounds | [email protected]

With November coming to a close and the start of December, we are still in the middle of
getting leaves cleaned up. Hopefully, in a few weeks most of the trees will have dropped
their leaves. The fall sesaon has been on the cool side with plenty of rainfall, and our first
freeze occurred on November 11th. The bermuda grass is slowly going dormant, but the
greens will still produce a little growth on the warmer days. With the frost and freeze comes
the delay of starting tee times. Mother Nature takes control of this, and some days it will
only be a short delay while other days may incur a delay of two hours.
Later this fall and on throughout the winter we will be working on tree management. There are several trees
that need to come down around the course, with many decaying and showing dead branches in the canopy. We
will also lift the canopies to allow more light to reach the turf. We are planning to work on irrigation if there is a
break with colder temperatures. As winter settles in, we will start to work on equipment and get prepared for
next spring. Please remember to repair ball marks. This is always very important, but especially this time of year
as the grass slows in growth and is not able to recover as quickly.
The Golf Course Maintenance crew wishes you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Fitness Christmas Hours

by Matt Sommer, MS, CSCS, CES, PES, Christmas Eve 7:00am - Noon

Director of Fitness | [email protected] Closed Christmas Day

New Year’s Hours
New Year’s Eve 7:00am - 6:00pm

Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is right Closed New Year’s Day

around the corner, marking the beginning of a 5-week

holiday celebration that often spells doom for your health and fitness plan. Along with those

celebrations will come headlines and news stories highlighting the holiday weight gain that

thousands of people experience every year. Ignore them. Don’t think about weight gain this

holiday season. Instead, think about celebrating with friends and family while simultaneously enjoying the

sensation of living in a body that’s healthy. What you do on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day isn’t your major

concern. It’s all the other days in between that will determine if your holidays are healthy. Overeating on

Thanksgiving Day isn’t going to get you out of shape. Just like doing things right one day isn’t going to get you

in shape. It’s all the little things on a daily basis that determine if you are moving forward fitness or away from it.

Here are a few tips for surviving the holidays and for increasing your energy and reducing your stress, this

season and all year long.

1. Take time for yourself. Although spending time with friends and family is essential, it’s also important to

have at least five minutes to yourself to relax. Try practicing a deep breathing exercise when you feel

stressed out.

2. Don’t set unrealistic goals. Aim to exercise 20 minutes a day instead of an hour. You’ll be sure to get at

least 20 minutes of exercise per day without feeling disappointed if you do not complete an hour.

3. Enlist a friend or family member to exercise with you. Walking and talking with a friend can be a great

way to burn extra calories and reduce your stress level.

4. Don’t try to lose weight or stick to a restrictive diet this holiday season. If you enjoy your favorite

foods in small portions, you’ll feel more satisfied. Trying to stay away from certain foods may make you

feel deprived, which may cause you to eat more than you intended to.

5. Create new, more active traditions. Instead of throwing a dessert or cocktail party, try an alternate

holiday event.

6. Drink plenty of water. Although the cold weather may make you less inclined to grab a glass of water,

it is just as important in the winter as it is during the summer.

7. Spread out meals. Don’t feel like you have to eat everything at once. Try eating dinner early and then

taking a walk before sitting down for dessert.

8. Don’t overdo it with alcohol or caffeine. These stimulants will only cause you more grief in the end by

adding to your feelings of stress.

9. Don’t aim for perfection, and enjoy imperfections. There is no such thing as the perfect party or the

perfect decorations or the perfect way to spend the holidays.

10. Laugh. Laughing is a great tension reliever. It burns calories, reduces stress, and usually means that you

are enjoying yourself.

Stefan and I want to thank everyone that came out to the courts this season for lessons,
clinics, USTA league play, Men’s Night, ball machine usage and social/family play. We
appreciate all of your support to our program and look forward to an exciting 2019
tennis season. During the “off season” we recommend getting into the fitness center for
some strength training or cardio workouts. This will add power and conditioning to your
game. Contact Matt, Ben or Kenny for more information (336-584-9848).

Additionally, if you have a nagging shoulder, elbow, neck or back injury, give massage
a try. I have personally started incorporating massages into my off-court training and it
has made a difference. Aside from relaxation and recovery, massage also stretches the
muscles to aid in healing inflammation. Contact Elizabeth for more information (336-584-9848).
As the weather changes, we will begin preparations to close courts #1-3 and open courts #4 & 5 for the winter
season. The hard courts (#6-8) will remain open, weather permitting. Please call the Tennis Shop to make a
court reservation, use the ball machine, or to check on court conditions as colder temperatures could close all
the courts. We will also be taking down the windscreens this season to repair and replace any damaged sections.
Please contact me if you have any comments, questions or concerns. Always at your “service”.

It’s basically ping-pong in a tennis court! It’s fun and easy to learn.
We will schedule more play days for this spring. Additionally, the
Tennis Shop has plenty of paddles and balls for you to check out.
COMING SOON: Pickleball lessons and clinics!!
