Alamance Today

August 2018

From the Board

by Gerry Francis, President

With the GM search in process, with ACC’s fiscal year 3/4th complete, and with the
Amenity Lawn nearing completion, I thought a general ACC update to be timely.

First, the GM search is progressing smoothly. Having received over 40 applications
our consultant, Patricia Calder, and the Search Committee have identified 6 candidates for
Skype interviews. From these initial interviews we hope to select 2 to 3 candidates to bring
for in person interviews in August. If all goes well, we expect to have our new GM in place
this fall—hopefully October. Since Jonathan’s last day is July 31, we are currently dis-
cussing how best to organize interim leadership until the new GM arrives.
The Amenity Lawn project has really taken shape under Matt Robert’s leadership—thanks Matt. The plants,
flowers, shrubs and trees are most attractive. There are still a few pieces of the lawn project yet to be completed
including lamps for the light poles, painting the wall at the roadway, adding screening to the backside of the
fences to block out machinery and work areas, installing gates to the fence, and placing the new furniture when
it arrives. This is a wonderfully attractive area. Please enjoy it—dine there (when the furniture arrives), plan
events there, watch your friends finish golf on #18, or just sit and relax.
Membership, which is the fundamental component for a thriving club has increased to 481. Our goal remains
to reach 500 members by the end of the fiscal year, September 30. Reaching this goal (and the goal we will set
after that) is key to our continued success. Each of you can help by recruiting just one new member—current
members are our best recruiters. And you receive $500 toward your club bill for each new member you recruit—
who can’t use that?
For 2017-18 we budgeted to have a $60,000 operational surplus. To this point(July1) we are at +$75,000
along with an additional $75,000 in unbudgeted initiation fees. We are truly hopeful that these numbers hold up
for the remainder of the summer and early fall. For your information special events, like weddings, are truly what
provides these margins. Your help in attracting these events is most appreciated.
From yearly capital revenues of approximately $350,000, we allocated approximately $275,000 at the begin-
ning of the year for capital expenses--- equipment purchases, leases, repairs, debt payment, etc. But during the
year we have incurred additional expenses that will use the remainder of these funds—pergola repair at the pool,
additional resurfacing costs for tennis courts, coping work on the pool, and significant air conditioner replacements.
We are still holding an operational reserve fund of $68,000 and a capital reserve fund of $75,000. Hence, our
financial position remains positive. But stronger membership will help strengthen not only the annual budget,
but allow us to plan and pay for additional initiatives.
I trust the above is beneficial to your understanding where the Club is operationally and hope that you are
enjoying the summer activities. The Club is quite active, alive and experiencing strong participation. Please do
your share to support the Club.

Gerry Francis,

From the General Manager

by Jonathan Spence, General Manager

Greetings Alamance Country Club Members,

In July we started our first annual Fourth of July Bike Parade here at the Alamance
Country Club. All who came were invited to decorate their bicycles to show off their
patriotic spirit of red, white and blue. Since the parade, many of the staff and members ex-
pressed how much fun it was and they can’t wait to repeat it again next year. The club also
hosted a few other longstanding traditional events such as the Red, White and Blue Golf
Tournament with over 100 participants and our July Fourth Pool Party with DJ Chris “Chubs”
and Chef Teri’s BBQ Buffet. Needless to say, we had a big increase in attendance from last year’s events and look
forward to making next year’s Independence Day week more exciting than ever.
The club’s Amenity Lawn project should be at or nearing completion by the time this article is in print. Please
take the time to give special thanks to our Amenity Lawn Committee, Bob Kernodle, Chap McQueen, Alan Gant,
Denise Gant, Gerry Francis and Matt Roberts. Each committee member has graciously worked on this since last
summer and all of us are quite excited to see the lawn space enjoyed by members. As a reminder the Amenity
Lawn offers a beautiful landscape for private or open member events with a fire pit, limited outdoor dining options

and seating space with one of the best (if not the best) views on the club’s property. I am confident that ACC
members will enjoy club events, golf tournaments, live music and BBQs for many years to come in this exciting new
venue. If you are interested in booking a private event on the Amenity Lawn, please call Brittany Myers, the club’s
Catering Director for more information.

Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank the entire Alamance Country Club family for your enduring support and
friendship during my brief tenure as your steward. My wife Rachel and I, along with our two sons, Jack and Will,
have greatly enjoyed being a part of the Alamance community. Over the years I have worked at other clubs with
great members and staff but have never encountered the culture of kindness, support and genuine goodwill that
I have experienced here at ACC. It makes it extra difficult to depart, and I will greatly miss the best members and
staff that I have ever had the pleasure to know. I will miss ACC dearly and please know that if you are ever in
Charleston, SC and need some ideas on what to do and where to go, please feel free to call me. I will always
remain a friend to the Alamance Country Club and wish all of you well. I firmly believe the club is headed for
nothing short of greatness. Thank you so much for being awesome and God bless!

All the best, Jonathan

Membership

by Leanna Giles, Membership Director | [email protected]

Each morning I enjoy opening up my email and listening to the daily “Minute with
Maxwell”. That would be leadership guru, John Maxwell. Recently the “Minute with
Maxwell” was on the word “Investment”, and he goes on to talk about sowing and reaping.
He said, “You must sow a seed - that is INVESTING, and then you must be patient”. The
return will come. I am so proud of our Club and the seeds that we have sown. Our
renovation and amenity lawn have come to fruition after several years of hard work, and
with your help, we have grown and continue to grow our membership roster.

So, don’t forget to sow those seeds and please invite friends, neighbors and colleagues
to experience making memories at ACC! Also, don’t forget we offer you an incentive for helping us recruit new
members. Did you know that we will give a $500 credit if you sponsor a new member? Please continue to
spread the word about our wonderful Club and contact me personally if you would like to bring a prospective
member to visit the Club.

Please join me in welcoming the following new members and thanking their sponsors:

New Members: Mike Nall, Pete Glidewell
Sponsors: David Vaughn, Ronnie Price

With warm regards, Leanna

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! It’s hard to believe how fast it is flying
by. Before you know it, we will be gearing up for the holiday season! Speaking of which, our
December dates are filling up fast. If an evening date you had in mind is not available, think
about the possibility of a holiday breakfast, brunch, or lunch to celebrate with your friends,
family and coworkers. Please reach out today if you haven’t already to ensure your date for
your holiday celebrations.

The new year 2019 is also beginning to be on everyone’s mind as we have already booked
our first wedding for the year! Please keep us in mind as your loved ones begin the planning
process of their big day as we can assist with all their needs, including planning, timelines, linens and much
more. As a reminder, if you refer a friend, co-worker, family member, etc., to plan an event with us and host it,
you will receive a 25% off certificate for your lunch or dinner in the 1946 Grill. We still have space and dates
available throughout the summer and fall months, so this is a great time to be planning something special!!

I look forward to working with you on your next event!

We had such a blast celebrating Independence Day here at ACC!! It was awesome seeing everyone’s individuality
and creativity as we paraded our bikes and floats around the pool. Please be sure to join us again as we celebrate
Labor Day with DJ Chub as well as many games for all ages! Be sure to take advantage of our time left at the pool
this August before school begins. The new pool rules and hours are posted online and at pool control. If you have

Elizaany questions or concerns, please contact myself or any lifeguard for clarification. We wish to provide the best

experience for our ACC family at the pool. Musically,

From Tee to Green by Peter Horn,CGCS | Course Superintendent

June brought us some very hot temperatures with good rain in the early to mid-part of the

month. From the end of June to early July we have been very dry with less than an inch of

rain over that period of time. We have been irrigating parts of the course every night so we

can hopefully keep the grass somewhat green, which of course, costs the Club money. If it

stays very dry we will have to cut back on watering the fairways so we can concentrate on

greens, tees and perimeters.

The greens are doing well, and we are watching them closely. You can see some spots

on the greens that are not doing well. These are segregated spots that do not do well in

high heat. If you look closely you can see that all look like the same kind of grass.

It’s one variety of the 15 that make up our greens that is affected. Last summer we were in

a more temperate climate where the temperatures were more mild and rain was more abundant.

We will just have to wait and see how the rest of the summer goes.

Matt Roberts has done a great job with designing the Amenity Lawn and all the new landscaping around it.

The variety of plants and the color scheme look awesome. Hopefully, this scheme will carry out to the other

buildings on the property in the years to come.

We hope your summer is going well and you can find a not-so-hot day to play some golf. If you see any rain

out there, please send it our way. :)

Have a fun, safe summer.
