Alamance Today

June 2018

From the General Manager

Over the course

of the last few

weeks many of you

may have noticed

that the Club’s

Amenity Lawn project

is currently under

construction. As

Jonathan Spence long as Mother
Nature stays kind

General Manager to us, we anticipate

[email protected] the project will be
finished by mid-July.

This new outdoor event space will offer a

unique venue for club social events, pri-

vate parties, and outdoor dining options.

In addition to providing a lawn space for

fun gatherings at ACC, the Amenity Lawn

will be accented with hardscape walkways

overlooking the 18th Green. Pictured on

the right is snapshot of the Amenity Lawn

design and layout. We look forward to this

new venue adding more value to your

membership experience and we can’t wait

to unveil it for you and your loved ones.

Beginning on May 28, 2018 the 1946

Grill will suspend its summer lunch service

and will reopen after Labor Day on September

4, 2018. During this time, dinner service

will continue to be offered in the 1946

Grill from 5:30pm – 9:00pm, Tuesday -

Sunday and will close on Friday Nights at

10:00pm. The Saddle Club Lounge will

remain open on Wednesday nights from

5:30pm – 9:00pm and Friday nights for

adult only dining from 5:30pm – 10:00pm.

This temporary seasonal shift will allow the

club to operate more efficiently while still

maintaining a lunch offering to ACC

members at the pool pavilion.

During the summer months while the

1946 Grill will be closed temporarily for

lunch, the Alamance Country Club Pool Pavilion will provide al fresca and indoor lunch options with a beautiful

view of the of the club’s #18 Green. Members will also notice an indoor bar in the room allowing club staff to cre-

ate and serve your favorite summertime beverages and craft beers. Adjacent to the indoor dining area at the pool

the Club will also offer a “fun zone” area for kids and tweens with video games on our X-Box, ping pong, board

games and a seating area to lounge and cool off from the hot sun. Chef Terri and her culinary team have a great

pool grill menu this summer and will also showcase daily lunch and dinner features.

Here’s to looking forward to another fun summer at the club! It’s a great time to be an ACC member so please

tell your friends who have not joined yet to come by and see what our fantastic Club has to offer.

All the best,

Jonathan Spence, CCM

Happy summertime all! Thank you all who have already referred and sponsored

events. We love that you are proud to show off your Club and that you know our service will

Peter Horn, From Tee to Green
CGCS
May has brought us some interesting weather. The month started out with pleasant
Course temperatures. By the second week it felt like July temperatures, and the weather the following
Superintendent week brought us normal temperatures and some much needed rain. Hopefully a dry pattern
will not be the norm for the summer.

The winter kill areas especially around the greens have started to fill in. With fertilizer and
rain they will continue to get smaller. There are some areas that are too large to wait to fill
in especially the front of 1, 3,10, 16 and some other areas that are not too big but would
need sodding. I have measured these areas and the sod will be ordered the end of May or
the beginning of June.

The bermuda not affected by the cold has grown well during May. The putting greens
have filled in from aerifying and are rolling very well. We will try to keep the speed up until
it gets hot and stays hot for the rest of the summer where we will then raise the height of
cut a little. Please remember to fill in divots only half full and repair ball marks. Ball marks
are numerous on the greens. They will not fill in very well when it gets hot out, and it only
takes a few seconds to repair your mark. Thank you.

Director’s Letter

The temperature is rising and in the excitement of a friendly round of golf, you might

not notice it, but your body will. If you exercise outdoors in the heat, use caution and

common sense to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your heart and lungs. Both the exercise

itself and the air temperature increases your body temperature. To dissipate heat, more

blood circulates through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which increases

your heart rate. If the humidity is high, your body faces added stress because sweat

Matt Som m er doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin, which only pushes your body temperature higher.
Under normal conditions, your skin, blood vessels and perspiration level adjust to the
MS, CSCS, CES, PES
Director of Fitness heat. But these natural cooling systems may fail if you’re exposed to high temperatures
and humidity for too long. The result may be a heat-related illness, such as heat cramps,

heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

To avoid heat-related illnesses, keep these basic precautions in mind:

• Take it slow. If you are used to exercising indoors or in cooler weather, take it easy at first. As your body

adapts to the heat, gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts. If you have a chronic medical

condition or take medication, ask your doctor if you need to take additional precautions.

• Drink plenty of fluids. Your body’s ability to sweat and cool down depends on adequate rehydration. Drink

plenty of water while you are working out - even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you’re planning to exercise intensely

or for longer than one hour, consider sports drinks instead. These drinks can replace the sodium, chloride and

potassium you lose through sweating. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol, which actually promote fluid

loss.

• Dress appropriately. Lightweight, loose fitting clothing promotes sweat evaporation and cooling by letting

more air pass over your body. Avoid dark colors, which can absorb the heat. A light-colored hat can limit your

exposure to the sun.
