RIDE DESTINATION:
Davenport – Santa Cruz - Capitola

Sea Caves Davenport Beach

Well, it was bound to happen.
We’ve been dodging bad
weather for a few months now
and again this month I thought I had
found a couple of nice days to get out
and about - at least according to the
weather man. So, I rode on down to
the Santa Cruz area on, what turned out
to be, a really nice day. The next day,
coming back, was not so much. It started
raining at the top of SR17 and continued
for the next 5 hours home. Traffic was
horrendous and I probably lane split 30-
40 miles. Since it was April Fools Day, I
guess the joke was on me. HA!

Anyway, back to the good part. After and Lounge. I can never get enough Italian food. There were

You’ll enjoy lots of twists, turns, and great scenery along the
way. Once in Boulder Creek, I figured it was time for some
grub. So, I put the kickstand down at Scopazzi’s Restaurant

I was through here and almost forgot how nice a ride it is. A
very pleasant cruise through the beautiful coastal redwoods.
At the park headquarters, you can get a map and if you
have a little time, can enjoy one of the short hikes through
the majestic woods. Leaving the park. I made my way to
Jamison Creek Road, where I turned west. Down the road
apiece, Jamison Creek turns to Empire Grade and a later
turn on Pine Flat Road will take you through Bonney Doon
and down to the coast.

At Highway 1, hang a right and you’ll be in Davenport
in a matter of minutes. My home for the night would be

Definitely a great sea food ambiance. As far as parking, I
found a spot on the pier, but a large group would most likely
have to find space up on the streets.

After some fine clam chowder, it was time to head home.
Instead of taking Highway 17 (done that too many times), I
decided to take the back way via Soquel/San Jose Rd, Old
Santa Cruz Highway and Alma Bridge Road. This route will
take you along the east side of the Lexington Reservoir. I
like it much better than 17. A nice relaxed, woodsy ride with
some fine views of the lake thrown in. Alma Bridge Road let
me out at the top of Highway 17 and from there, you know
the “the rest of the story.”

Till next time….

for just a second, so we

that we ended up going to Yosemite in the first place.

In the fall of 2017, Terri and I were on a day ride getting video content about Fall Riding
Tips for our YouTube channel: Hillon2wheels. Early on a Thursday morning, we rode out
of Folsom and headed up the hill towards Markleeville and up Ebbetts Pass to see the fall
colors. It is a great ride all by itself and it seemed like we had the roads to ourselves. As we
gained in elevation, Terri was getting a bit cold so I pulled over to give her a chance to add
another layer of clothing. About this time, Brian Ingraham and James Graham rode past
us, when they saw us they flipped a quick bitch back to where we were parked. We were
kind of surprised to see anyone - much less people we knew! We asked Brian and James
what they were doing out on a Thursday morning when they told us that they had started
a new riding group for those riders that were retired or had weekdays off for a mid-week
ride and today, they were riding to South Lake Tahoe for lunch.

Their riding group is called the Retired Misfit Crew. And they Stuck behind Amador

getting out of their zip codes regularly sharing a common bond
of adventure making memories as the ride progresses. Since
that day, we have followed the group on Facebook. It just so
happened that our stars aligned and we were freed up to join

know with light traffic all day, we get stuck behind a slow
poke cager that refused to pull over for us! Oh well, it
was still a fun route to take. We rolled into Groveland
and stopped at the historic Iron Door Saloon for a tasty
lunch.

We made our way over the pass and there was still
quite a bit of snow piled up alongside the road, but the
road itself was perfectly clear. As we made the decent
below the snow line, we just happened to cross paths
with another one of the Misfits going the other way. We
pulled over and sure enough Raymond - the missing
Misfit turned around and caught back up to us.

Two things struck me at that moment, one was how
random it was that it worked out and we crossed paths
at all. The other was upon meeting Raymond for the first
time we found out that he is a motorcycle police officer.
Nothing unusual there - except it donned on me how much
Raymond must love to ride for him to ride all week for work
and then jump on his personal ride to get more riding in
on his day off! Needless to say I was impressed. Now all
together our small group rolled into the Yosemite Valley
and what a spectacular sight it was! The Valley was alive
with springtime budding everywhere on the valley floor and
the snowcapped mountains had started to release their
torrents of water from the melting snow. This time of year

unusually light and that made it
easy to find places to park our

scenic photos and selfies. We
took our time making the loop

several places to just admire
the surreal scenery that was
laid out before us.

more thing that I wanted to point out, we left the Sacramento

day left to get a few things done around the house before

Occasionally, we will come
across a motorcycle that
has a lifetime of stories
behind it. This month’s
RIDE PRIDE feature is one such
motorcycle. You see this bike was a
dream build for Mark Cheek - a long
time biker out of Oroville. Mark had
worked hard on bringing this bike
back better than ever. Unfortunately
Mark became ill and passed away
before he could finish the project
in 2017. That is when Rhonda -
Mark’s widow stepped in to make
sure that Mark’s dream of rebuilding
this motorcycle would continue
through to its completion. Rhonda
along with the help of friend Robb
Curtis would enter this beautiful ‘55
Pan Head in the 2019 Easyriders
Bike Show. And to top off this
process, the bike placed 3rd in a
very competitive category. We can
only imagine that Mark is watching
with pride from above that his dream
became a reality after all.

REMEMBER
THE ROCKER

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 28

Grant Davis from Tracy built this
bike several years ago, it started
out as a 2008 Softail Rocker.
Remember those bikes? Since that
time this bike has continued to evolve as
Grant thought of more creative ways to
get things done. Grant is a machinist by
trade, so pretty much every part of this
bike has been modified with parts that he
would make himself. Just as an example,
look at that beautiful primary cover; Yep
Grant made that along with the custom
saddle bags and everything else on this
motorcycle. If you have been to any of the
Nor Cal bike shows over the past couple
of years - you may have seen this one.
If you get a chance to see it again - take
another look, because it will undoubtedly
be different the next time. That is just the
way this Rocker rolls.

Ibegan my love of riding on the back
of a family friends Harley at the age of
13. I would later get caught up in drug
and alcohol addiction and was a slave to
feeding my habit. After going to Prison, I
made a decision to turn my will and my life
over to the care of God. I never imagined
the freedom that this would bring until the
day I began riding my own. To celebrate
my 8th year of recovery I purchased
my 1st Harley a 1995 Sportster 1200.
This is when the love affair began and
I developed a true love for the thrill of
riding and all that it entails. One year
later I needed to upgrade and purchased

me the ability to ride. This dream would

Recovery has given me and I am forever
grateful to God and to those that have
gone before me. Today, I take it one lane
at a time in all areas of my life.

Eric, as the CEO for The Vet-Traxx Project, are there
plans for a 3rd Annual Vet-Traxx Festival? If so, what is
your line-up for the festival? After the 2nd event, I was so
exhausted from all the pressure, stress, and my performance,
I just broke down in tears for a brief moment. I was comforted
by some of our artists and they mentioned that they were proud
of me, and so honored to be associated with our organization. I
am truly humbled by their support, and I was 95% sure I wasn’t
going to host the 3rd Vet-Traxx Festival. The next day, FLAW
came by Vet-Traxx Project studio and we traded collectibles
and autographs, etc. Chris Volz (lead singer from FLAW)
said, “WE’RE COMING BACK NEXT YEAR”. I was like nah,
I don’t think we are going to do it. Chris said, you didn’t hear
me. WE ARE COMING BACK NEXT YEAR! He gave me the
thumbs up and said he would make a tour around whatever
date we set. At that moment it really hit me, I was like, OKAY,
we will do it again. The difference with this year is I am letting
go of some of the reigns and letting some of my directors and
volunteers take the lead. That relieves a lot of stress off me
and I can stay focused on the event as a whole! This year we
have FLAW, BI·AS and Elisium playing as our national acts.
