2017 Questionnaire:
Introduction to Results

Every parent/carer who used Class Of Their Own during 2017 was invited to
complete our annual parents/carers’ questionnaire.

We distributed the digital questionnaire on October 12th 2017 to all parents/carers
on our email list. We took this approach, and did not distribute it through social
media, or our website, to ensure only current users of our services were able to
complete the questionnaire. To encourage completion, parent/carers were
incentivised with the opportunity to win a £100 Class of Their Own voucher.

In total 124 questionnaires were completed by parents/carers online, representing
the views of 142 children.

The breakdown of completed questionnaires was as follows:

95 After School Club (ASC) users
76 Holiday Club (HC) users
16 Breakfast Club (BC) users

The purpose of conducting the annual questionnaire is to identify and address
areas for improvement across Class Of Their Own. This has been done by utilising
different question types to generate both quantitative and qualitative data. In
certain questions parents/carers were asked to rate specific attributes such as
‘Does your child enjoy coming to Holiday Club?’ on a sliding scale between 1 and
4, in which ‘1’ was deemed to be very poor and ‘4’ to be excellent. The sliding scale
type of questions were largely used to gather quantitative data which could be
easily analysed and made into charts, graphs and other figures.

Open ended questions were also asked to parents/carers to receive a more
detailed, focused response. Questions such as ‘Are there any activities/resources
that could be improved at Holiday Club?’ were asked to see if any specific needs
were being missed inside club or to reveal if there were any recurring issues
within the responses.

Additional questionnaire data can be viewed in appendices.

Respondent data

Number of children attending and age
Of the 124 respondents 79 parents/carers had 1 child attending Class Of Their
Own clubs, 30 respondents had 2 children attending club and 1 respondent had 3
children attending club (one respondent did not have any children attending club
and their response has been excluded, see below).

With regards to the age of the children attending club this varies largely but the
most popular age range is between 5 and 8 with 73% of children falling within this
4 year age band (see below). The lesser seen ages were 4 and 11 – this is typically
due to the cycle of when children start primary school. The questionnaire was
distributed in October, when most 4 year olds were joining the Reception year and
would have not had significant experience of our services.

We had a great response from parents attending our busy clubs in Brighton and
Hove. Our clubs in West Sussex had a lower response rate, these clubs are less
busy locations and thus had a smaller base to draw upon.

In the next section of the report After School Club, Breakfast Club and Holiday
Club data will be reviewed in detail, part of the Holiday Club section will be used
to discuss the implications and impact of Play Explorers on Holiday Club.

After School Club

Ninety five respondents provided data for the After School Club (ASC) section
which looked at child enjoyment in club, range of activities, age appropriateness
of our activities and more.

ASC: Child enjoyment
Respondents were asked to rate their child/ren’s enjoyment whilst at club. The
data received for this question was very positive with 86.9% of parents/carers
judging child enjoyment as either a 3 or 4 upon the sliding scale (see below).

ASC: Activities

The questionnaire also required parents/carers to judge the age appropriateness
of activities that were present in Class Of Their Own ASC. Over 93.5% of
respondents felt the selected activities were age appropriate for their children and
nearly 60% of those achieving the highest grading. See below.

“Both my kids love Class Of Their Own. Some days they hide because they don’t
want to leave and come home which I think is always a good sign!”

However, some respondents did express a desire to know more about how their
children spend their time in club. Out of the 92 responses to this question 28% felt
that they had inadequate or average knowledge of the activities being run in club.
Currently we send out a weekly email which details snack and activities in clubs.
We will review how this can be improved, to ensure that parents have better
visibility of what their children do in club. We have also been reviewing our social
media to see how we can share more photos of what children and our team get
up to in club.

ASC: Snack in club
We asked parents for their opinion on the snack their child/ren receive in club,
over 87% of the responses agreed that the snack in club is good. While a majority
of parents consider the snack to be good we received comments about snack
size, variety and quality. This is one area we will continue to review.

ASC: Club staff

In this subsection overall helpfulness of the ASC Club Co-ordinators will be
reviewed (see below), as well as looking into which staff members received
special mentions from the parents/carers who responded to ‘Have any of the
After School Team particularly impressed you/your child/ren and why?’ question
when, answering the questionnaire. As pictured below the ASC club staff have all
been very accommodating and helpful to parents/carers within the club with
97.8% of responses falling in the good or excellent, with 75% of respondents
awarding the highest possible grade. It’s fantastic seeing the hard work by our club
teams receiving glowing praise from parents, carers and children.

ASC: Reason for using Class Of Their Own
We wanted to find out what the primary reason parents/carers have for using
Class Of Their Own. To attain responses for this topic the questionnaire simply
asked the open-ended question ‘Why do you use the After School Club?’ which
generated 91 responses. Of these 91 responses three easily identifiable categories
were found (see below).

Primary reason for using Class Of Their Own?

81

Work 6 4 5
Social Convienent Fun/Activities

As displayed by the chart the most dominant factor was work. As a provider of
services for children of working families, who need our service, it is always our aim
for children to ‘want’ to come to the club and to love their time there.

“Work long hours, good continuity of care
and reliable”

“We both work full time and need safe
childcare”

As a result of this feedback it is clear that for After School Clubs the main objective
should be to ensure that the needs of parents/carers, in relation to providing
clubs which are flexible and fit around their working hours. To enable us to gain
in-depth insight, parent/carers views were gathered regarding the one thing they
would change if they could.

Copyright Class of Their Own ® 2018

Page 13

ASC: One thing Class Of Their Own should change
This open-ended question asked respondents to select one thing they would
change if they were able to. To provide meaningful insight, the 57 full text
responses were to this question were grouped, and fell into 7 different categories
as shown below. The text answer are shown in full in the appendices.

One thing Class Of Their Own should change 13

21

88
3 543

The highest degree of required change concerned resources, with 21 parents
highlighting improvements to resources in some way.

As a result of this feedback, we have made significant changes to how our
budgets are allocated, and increased the budget for holiday club activities. This
increase will have a positive effect on After School Club resources as the
resources are shared and remain in the club following the holidays. A proportion
of consumable resources (such as arts and crafts) are not used during the holidays
and are retained for use by the After School Club as is specific equipment.

‘Regular changes of toys’ or ‘repairs to current resources such as the pool table’.

Furthermore, in this category is snack with many parents/carers expressing that
snack needs to be more varied and larger as children grow up – one parent stated
that ‘snack used to be better in infants’ with another saying that ‘snack should be
more substantial or give an option of dinner’.

With regards to the timing of ASC some parents/carers expressed the desire to
extend club finishing times by either half an hour or all the way up to 7PM. Other
parents would prefer the option to pay hourly or to have the ability to book shorter
sessions to allow for extra savings.

Page 14

Breakfast Club

This section is short as only 6 questions were asked regarding these clubs – of the
124 responses only 16 of these had children that had attended Breakfast Clubs in
the past 12 months (see below). Of these 16 respondents the parents/carers had
10 at the Brunswick Junior Breakfast Club, 6 children at the Holland Road BC, and
0 at Southover BC.

Parents/carers were asked to share their thoughts about ‘Range of activities’ and
‘Breakfast (e.g. variety and size) offered within the Breakfast Club. Children found
that the range of activities were worse in After School Club. We will review how
we can improve the range of activities in Breakfast Club.

For both questions over 70% of respondents answers fell within the upper two
quartiles (see below). This overwhelmingly positive response indicates that overall
satisfaction is high, although we note areas for improvement in both categories.
With a small response rate, it should be noted that one respondent can have a
significant impact on an overall grading.

Other comments made by parents/carers at the end of the section did raise
concerns that the BC venues do not seem as welcoming as they could which
occasionally leads to a negative environment within the club itself. This is
something we will review.

Holiday Club

71 respondents answered questions within the section, covering 10 of our Holiday
Club venues was gathered.

HC: Overall enjoyment
To gain insight regarding overall child happiness within the HC’s ratings scales
were used to determine 3 things; general enjoyment in club, age appropriateness
of activities and range of activities.

Does your child/ren enjoy coming to Holiday Club? 45.80%

43.10%

1.40% 9.70% 3 4 (Excellent)
1 (Poor) 2

Generally parents/carers were very positive about their child/ren’s enjoyment of
Holiday Club. 87% of children said they enjoyed Holiday Club, this is higher than
the result we received for After School Clubs. Whilst this is a positive reflection of
the HC, experience has shown the longer HC day allows the team to get to know
the children better and to engage in more in-depth activities. Children who attend
ASC attend regularly, and their enjoyment must be a priority, and this is something
we will review in the coming months.

Age appropriateness of Holiday club activities 54.90%

42.30%

Again, parents/carers were very positive about the age appropriateness of
activities at Holiday Club. We will continue to invest in resources for all ages.

Finally, parents/carers were very positive about the range of activities at Holiday
Club. Over 95% of parents/carers said our range of activities were good or
excellent, this is an exceptional result.

Next, we delved into what exactly children enjoyed about our Holiday Clubs.
Using thematic analysis the open-ended responses were grouped in the table
below, with two key themes becoming apparent.

Category Mentions

Activities 30
Trips/Workshops 9
Other 2

Of the responses received the vast majority expressed the true enjoyment and
happiness their children spoke of about the activities we do in club. The majority
of responses mentioning ‘activities’ touched upon the fact that we do ‘messy’ play
in clubs which is often impractical in the family home – responses such as
‘anything messy!’, ‘water play’ and ‘modelling stuff’ enforced this point. Responses
also stated that the trips/workshops were a highlight to HC with several mentions
for the park trip as well as the visits from external visitors such a Jaws N Claws.

Parents/carers expressed their love of messy play in Holiday
Clubs: “anything messy!”, “water play” and “modelling stuff”.

The questionnaire also asked the respondents ‘Are there any activities/resources
that could be improved at Holiday Club?’ – This question received only 16
responses; 7 related to resources and 9 relating to activities. Several responses
referred to the need to fix/update the amount of toys available in club especially
to account for older girls, while other parents/carers mentioned that sometimes
the location at Holland Road was too hot during the summer. With regards to
activities a respondent mentioned that large group craft activities would be a
great way to form new friendships in club.

Copyright Class of Their Own ® 2018

Page 17
HC: Word of mouth referrals and leafleting
The overwhelmingly positive responses evidenced above have led to a huge
word of mouth referral rate from parents/carers to others in the local area. As
seen in the pie chart below over 90% of parents have recommended Class Of
Their Own services to friends/family with children.

HC: Why do you use Holiday Club?
Parents/carers were also asked the reason as to why they use Class Of Their Own
Holiday Club for their children – the responses to the question can be seen below.
The results found were very similar to the ASC data with work, childcare and
social being the only 3 responses.

As per the table below, work is the most prevalent reason for using the Holiday
Clubs on offer with respondents finding it difficult to get prolonged periods off of
work to look after their child/ren. One parent/carer stated ‘I need to work

Play Explorers

This section will look at the impact of the new Play Explorers initiative upon the
Holiday Clubs which ran from the summer holidays onwards in 2017. Specifically,
this section was introduced within the questionnaire to consult parental awareness
of the initiative, whether parents knew of the benefits and to discover which Play
Explorer Zone was most popular among the children attending club.

payments could be requested at the end of the month as opposed to mid-month
to coincide with the majority of pay days. As a result of this feedback, we have
changed our invoicing processes and now invoice monthly for term time sessions.

In October 2017 a separate questionnaire was distributed to be answered by the
children who attend our Holiday Clubs. This questionnaire was sent to supplement
the Parents Questionnaire. In total the Children’s Questionnaire contained ten
questions and managed to generate 28 responses from children aged between 4
and 9. Of the 28 responses a good range of club attendance was achieved, see
below, unfortunately only 1 response was achieved for Brunswick Juniors and

were ensuring that those in club were enjoying themselves and felt supported by
the team. Data points regarding the question ‘Were the Play Leaders fun &

Yes, all the time

As demonstrated 25 of the 28 children who answered the questionnaire found the
staff in club accommodating, fun and helpful – this is a resounding 89%.

Lastly, and most importantly it was essential to ask ‘Would you like to come
again?’ to determine how much they had enjoyed their time in the club and
likelihood to want to attend again in the future. This is particularly important due to
the prevalence of pester power and the influence that children can upon their
parents/carers.
