2018 IMG ACADEMY Junior World Championships

Qualifier at Park Hill GC

Beautiful autumnal weather for Final Qualifying to determine the BJGT 2018 teams
heading out to San Diego next July was a welcome sight, although wet conditions
underfoot meant tricky surfaces and a day for patience.

Mark Haghani led the way in the top age group, to book his place on the team to return to
Torrey Pines following a solid 76. He was chased home by Ben Allen just 2 shots back,
while Hannah Cash secured the top spot for the girls with an 82, ahead of Lucy Bedford in
second.

Jake Sowden had the round of the day, carding a 73 and a 7-shot victory in the Boys 13-14
Division, from Rick Zhou and Marco Cuartero, who needed an extremely tense, sudden
death play-off to decide who claimed the second place. Rick came out on top at the second
extra hole. Ashleigh Critchley will be returning to the JWC for the second year after a 78
saw her finish on top of the Girls 13-14 age group, with Jessica Pilgrim claiming the runner-
up spot and a place on the BJGT team.

A single shot decided both the 11-12 Divisions, as Louie Walsh fired a superb 74 to edge
out Elliot Jones on 75 at the top of the boys, while Sunny Wang, 81, took the win for the
girls to make consecutive appearances at Junior World ahead of Lili Rose Hunt, 82, who
will be joining her in San Diego.

Billy Wood claimed the top spot in the Boys 9-10 age group after a fine 79, with Alex Alder
taking the second qualifying place on 84. Lila-Belle Nacca is another player retaining a
place on the BJGT team, this time in the Girls 9-10, as she claimed the win with 89, ahead
of Estelle Berbner.

Ellis Kerr rounded off a fine season in the Boys 7-8 Division, as he took the honors at Park
Hill to claim his place on the team with a score of 89, ahead of Hayden Sarfo who took the
runner-up spot with 94, while Arianna Virik secured her place in the girls age group with 87,
ahead of Lucie Strnadova in second.

In the youngest age group, Dylan Barney continued his great form from a very consistent
season to earn the win with a fantastic 79, ahead of Oliver Aghera on 84, who edged out
two other players, who finished on 85 in a very tight climax.

2018 Tour Championship

Foxhills GC needs no introduction, it’s quite simply
one of the finest golfing resorts in Surrey and the UK,
and a fitting venue for the 2018 Tour Championship.
We will be sending the juniors out to play the Longcross Course and Manor Par 3, with ALL players
playing 18 holes, to decide the 2018 Tour Champions, and those who finish on Top will thoroughly
deserve the fantastic prizes on offer.
Thanks to our prize sponsors at Explanar, Golphin and Designer Golf, the 2018 Tour Champions will
walk away with some incredible prizes, all presented following the close of play at this prestigious
venue. The Tour Championship event will carry Double Order of Merit Points, so we may well see a
tense and exciting conclusion to the season-long BJGT, as things may change during the course of the
day.

Lindfield TGC Championship

The BJGT has always wanted to add World Amateur
Golf Ranking (WAGR) events to its schedule, as we
know that older players are keen to have the
opportunity to earn ranking points. We have secured
the backing of The Golf College for 2018 and they
are hosting an inaugural 54-Hole competition at their
home course, Lindfield, for our TGC Championship.

Once we have run the event in 2018, we can then
apply for WAGR points from 2019, so we are sure
that this will be one of the highlights of the season.

The event will run as three individual competitions, with BJGT OOM Points and trophies available
each day, as well as crowning an overall champion after 54 holes.

Therefore, players can enter 1, 2 or all 3 days, depending on their availability, but we are hoping that
the majority will take the opportunity to experience a multiple-day event.

Places will be limited in each division, so make sure that you get entries in early for this exciting and
challenging event.

Trophy and prize giving

The British Junior Golf Tour has had a long-standing relationship with the British Par 3
Championship at Nailcote Hall and building on this, we are delighted to announce that their
headline sponsor, Farmfoods, has agreed to sponsor the Tour in 2018.
This sees the British Junior Golf Tour added to their considerable involvement in golf through
the British Par 3 at Nailcote Hall and the European Senior Masters at the Forest of Arden.

This support will allow us to add features and develop the BJGT next year and hopefully it
will become another lasting partnership.
We would like to thank Eric Herd and his team for their support, which now covers the whole
game, from Juniors to Seniors - very impressive!

The Explanar Golf Training Aid, used by amateurs and professionals to
develop a powerful, repeatable swing in your own home.

The Explanar golf training aid will guide
your muscles into moving along your
optimum golf swing plane, and the re-
enactment of this movement on the golf
course will enable you to play longer,
straighter, and more consistent shots.
This improvement in the accuracy and
power of your shot will then act to reduce
your handicap.

By using the Explanar for about 10
minutes a day, you will see a dramatic
improvement in your core stability and an
increased level of rotation, all of which
are integral to adding control to your golf
swing and improving accuracy.

Balance and flexibility

By moving the roller along the hoop, you are using your muscles to memorise what
it feels like to perform the perfect golf swing. This repeated movement strengthens
the arm and back muscles, whilst also increasing balance and flexibility.

Players will have the opportunity to win a family holiday at 3 designated events this season:
Bourn Golf Club, Lindfield (Day 3) and Foxhills (Tour Championship) have been selected as the
qualifying venues. The chosen hole will be set up with cameras on the tee, behind the green and ‘pin
cam’ situated in the top of the pin, capturing where shots finish on the green, as long as they are within
8 m. Pin cam also measures, very accurately, the distance each shot finishes from the hole, so we will
know who wins nearest the pin should an ace not be achieved, without the leaderboard being displayed
in the clubhouse.
The footage from each
angle will then be combined
into a 30-second clip of
each player that will be
available after the event for
£2.50.
Should anyone achieve a
Hole-In-One on the
selected hole they will win a
holiday for 4 to Portugal
(details to be confirmed)
and obviously have
amazing video footage of
the achievement.

This is sure to add a fantastic and unique element to each of these events, so it’s time to practice your
Par 3s!

Introduction of Caddie Bibs

2018 will see many improvements for BJGT players, and as we are a Tour which encourages
the use of caddies, we have decided to introduce caddie bibs.

Collect your bib at the start of the day and hand it back at the end.

If you would like your name on the back of the caddie bib, £10 will buy you a name
panel to keep; just stick it on each time you play. You can find these in our online shop.

Magnolia Park GC Junior Open & Jakarta
World Junior Golf Championship Qualifier

We knew that Magnolia Park would provide a stern test for the players even in fine
conditions, but when the wind blows, it turns into a bit of a monster!
When unforecast rain was thrown sideways into the mix for around half an hour in the latter
stages, it became a real test of patience and attrition.
An unbelievable finish in the Boys 15-17 age group saw three players tie at the top on 86,
with another player just a shot further back, meaning a 3-way playoff was needed to decide
the winner!
Josh Wilks-Hanley edged out Harry West and Trafford Grimes at the first extra hole to claim
his place on the BJGT team at Ciputra World Junior Championship in Jakarta.
Jessica Sporle took the girls 15-17 top spot on the day, but was merely playing for ‘fun’, as
her handicap falls just outside the requirements set by the organisers in Jakarta.
Jake Sowden was desperate to secure a starting spot on the BJGT team, having had a
fantastic experience in Jakarta this year and he held his nerve to head the Boys 13-14
division from Zac Tilling, who had a nervous wait to claim the runner-up place after a fine
round.
Another play-off was required to separate the 13-14 Girls division, as Louise Burke and
Ashleigh Critchley both carded 84s; this time the second extra hole decided matters, with
Louise coming out on top and taking the place on the 2018 Jakarta team.
We also ran two age-group divisions that saw Jessica Pilgrim continue her good form to
finish ahead of Conor Anstiss in the 11-12 age group and Jayden Phipps made a winning
return to the BJGT to take the 9-10 title by a single shot from Finlay Rennie who, in turn,
was a single stroke in front of Ronnie Groves.

Junior Club Fi,ng - Designer Golf Ltd

With over 25 years of experience in golf club making and fitting and having built clubs for the likes of
Charley Hull, Designer Golf share some much-needed advice to parents of the next Tiger or Charley.
As adults, we know all too well how tough the game of golf can be some days and, more importantly, how
much the right equipment can help our game, but when it comes to juniors, many parents believe that a
partial set of ‘hand me down clubs’ will benefit the young person they’re intended for.
Of course it's great to get a very young child started with a cut down 7-iron and putter, but as the child gets
older, they will need a set of golf clubs that have been specifically made with their bodies in mind. Like
adults, children come in all shapes and sizes and need equipment that suit them as an individual if they
want to progress in this wonderful game.
There are a number of good junior club manufacturers these days, but remember that, like an adult, one
size does not fit all! So, what should you consider when looking for that all-important first set of clubs and
when should you upgrade to a more bespoke set.

Here are 4 points to help:
1. Length

Length is critical. I see far too many junior golfers gripping down the club too much; if the junior
golfer grips down the club more than 1.5–2 inches then they are gripping down too much and will
impact on their swing as they may find it difficult to swing the club around their body. Gripping down
about 1 inch will allow for a normal swing and a little room for growth.

At Designer Golf we custom-make our junior golf clubs and will lengthen free of charge until the child
requires a new set or change of shafts.

2. Shaft Flex

When you cut down a set of clubs for a junior, you will, in all likelihood, alter the shaft flex. Cutting 6
to 10 inches off a shaft will stiffen the shaft and the junior will struggle to hit the ball in the air.

Try to find an ultra-light flex to start with; something around LL or even LLL for swing speeds below
40 and as they get stronger the following:

(40-50 L) (50-60 A) (60-65 A 70g shaft) (65-70 R 70g shaft)

3. Weight

Using a lighter club to start with will help the junior golfer position the club correctly in the swing, too
heavy and the junior will struggle to get the club into the correct position at the top of the back swing
and cause them to manipulate the club in the swing to be able to hit the ball.

Most junior clubs come with slightly lighter heads, but are not that much lighter than regular heads
these days.

4. Grip Size

Grips that are too large for the junior will change their swing dynamics, as they will for adults ,so
ensure that they are able to grip the club properly. If you’re unsure whether the grip is correct, have
them hold the club in the left hand (for right-handed golfer): the middle and third finger should just
touch the thumb pad; if the fingers ‘dig in to it’ then the grip is too small (may hook the ball); if they
are nowhere near the pad then the grip is too large (may push the ball right).

These are just a few guidelines to follow so that a junior golfer will get the best out of their set and enjoy the
game more. A professionally-built set of club naturally come with a host of benefits over a shop-bought set,
and parents are usually pleasantly surprised at cost, but even more impressed with the improvements!
