THE HISTORY & HERITAGE OF GENEVA COLLEGE

For 165 years, Geneva College has shaped the Pictured above (top to bottom): Old Main in 1890, Geneva Football in 1957 vs. Westminster
lives and careers of generations of students. The (Geneva 34, Westminster 12), 1926 Geneva Football team with campus behind
idea of Geneva College actually was expressed as
early as 1836 by James Stewart Johnston, keeper of
a general store in New Richland, Ohio, where the
Scotch-Irish community came to buy tea, calico, gun
powder and utensils. The residents also exchanged
ideas here on everything from seed corn to the
Kingdom of Heaven, and many liked the idea of
a Christian liberal arts college.

Johnston’s brother, the Reverend John Black
Johnston, pastor of the Miami Reformed Presbyterian
Church, began holding a Latin class in his study at
Northwood, Ohio, in 1837. Initially, seven young
men attended. The class soon grew, opened to
include young women, and eventually moved to a
log school in the village.

On April 20, 1848, Geneva Hall opened in
Northwood, Ohio. The school was named in honor
of Geneva, Switzerland, center of the Reformed faith
movement. Under the sponsorship of the Reformed
Presbyterian Church of North America, Geneva
moved in 1880 to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, to
a parcel of land donated by the Harmony Society,
a German religious group.

Geneva continues today as a leader in Christian
education--developing servant-leaders who can
transform society for the kingdom of Christ. Our
goal is to empower graduates who will positively
impact their workplaces, communities, churches,
families and world.

QB Paul Critchlow called for a reverse. Joe

the crowd failed, the game was called due to

six minutes remaining, the game was saved for
W & J, and the legend of “Who tackled Joe

In 1926, Geneva once again found its “Covies”
in the national spotlight. A championship season,
highlighted by a 16-7 defeat of Harvard,
with a record of 8-2 under head coach “Bo”
McMillin, gave Geneva its most successful
season to date. A post season victory over
Ogelthorpe in Jacksonville, FL cemented their
claim as champions. Coach McMillin instilled
the winning attitude in 1926, but the on field
leader was Cal Hubbard, the most celebrated
athlete Geneva has produced. A member of
both the pro football and baseball Halls of

was both teams were ranked number three in

two weeks may have been the turning point
for the Golden Tornadoes. Since then they have
become a national power throughout the Mid-
States Football Association and the entire nation.
From the seasons of 1995-1997, Geneva
qualified for the NAIA national playoffs.
In 1998 Geneva received it’s first-ever
number one ranking. Geneva captured two
consecutive NCCAA titles in 1998 and 1999
and have followed that with back to back
NCCAA titles in 2002, 2003 and 2009. In
2005, DeMarco got his Golden Tornadoes
back into the NAIA Championship Series
after a seven-year layoff.
During the past 20 seasons under head
coach Geno DeMarco, the Golden Tornadoes
have compiled an overall record of 128-83,
including three conference titles and five
NCCAA titles. With that mark, head coach
Geno DeMarco became the winningest coach
in school history by passing his predecessor
Gene Sullivan in the next-to-last game of the
2007 season. DeMarco and the Golden
Tornadoes have enjoyed the most success of
any era of Geneva football since its inception
in 1890.
In 2007, Geneva began a new era as a
member of NCAA Division III and the Presidents’
Athletic Conference. It hasn’t taken long for
the Golden Tornadoes to leave an impression
by going 18-8 against its new conference foes
in the first three years. In the process, Geneva
became the 25th NCAA Division III school to
win 500 career games, a number that was
reached during the 2007 season.

CHARACTER

In recent years the Golden Tornadoes
have been spotted in the community
helping with local youth football camps,
reading to elementary students in the
classroom and organizing community
events such as 5K run/walks to raise
funds for orgainzations helping towards
the fight against cancer. In sync with
Geneva’s mission statement, every
year the Geneva football student-
athletes are given a manual that
explains, in detail, the practicalities
of living out Romans 8:37. “Character
is who you are when no one else is
looking” as stated on page seven in
the manual. “Character defines who
you are, it follows you, better yet, it
leads you everywhere you go. Without
character, troubles and the challenges
of life will expose you.”

The DeMarco Coaching Tree

During the past 20 years, Geno DeMarco and his staff have molded young men into not only outstanding college football
players, but outstanding young men. Upon their graduation from Geneva College, a total of 97 former players have gone on
to join the coaching ranks at either the high school or college level. The DeMarco coaching tree reaches far and wide and
exemplifies what an incredible impact Geneva College football has had on an entire generation of young coaches. With 92
student-athletes on the current roster, the chances are very good that the coaches of tomorrow are the Geneva players of today.

Tom Contenta

Defensive Backs/Recruiting Coordinator

[email protected]

Beginning his coaching career on College Hill in 2007, the former
Geneva standout has quickly climbed his way up the coaching
ladder and become one of DeMarco’s top assistants. Contenta
is entering his seventh year as defensive backs coach and is an
integral part of the defensive play calling.
As one of Geneva’s most competitive players on a defense that led the team to the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship series, Contenta
has become one of the most relentless recruiters in the region. As Recruiting Coordinator,
Contenta has taken the Golden Tornado marketing strategy to a new level, bringing in
the two largest recruiting classes in program history. His example of work ethic is classic
and his passion for Geneva College is unsurpassed. Along with his football duties, Coach
Contenta is also an instructor in the physical education department at Geneva.
From 2002-2005 Contenta roamed the Geneva secondary as a defensive back. His stellar
career was capped by earning four letters, All-Conference, and NCCAA All-American honors.
Contenta graduated from Geneva College with a Bachelor’s degree in Youth Ministry
in 2006. After graduation Contenta began his coaching career at his high school alma
mater, New Brighton, in 2006.
Tommy and his wife Chelsea reside in New Brighton with their new born, Ethan.

Mike Pinchotti

Linebackers/D-Coordinator

[email protected]

Since coming to Geneva in 2002 Mike Pinchotti has become a
welcomed fixture patrolling the Geneva sidelines, and since 2007
has been the catalyst behind the Golden Tornado Defense as the
Defensive Coordinator. “Mike has done an outstanding job with our
defense,” said head coach Geno DeMarco. “In particular he has
helped develop some of the finest linebackers to ever wear a Geneva uniform.” Recently,
Mike has taken the odd stack defense to a new level as a multiple look system, coordinating
the input of position coaches.
Pinchotti is also the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and has been instrumental in the
overall development of the football program on and off the field. Pinchotti has put his Masters
of Organizational Leadership degree from Geneva College to good use by developing
strength programs for other Geneva sport teams and football players in the off season. Along
with the task of player development Pinchotti, plays a role as an assistant head coach to Coach
DeMarco, where his years of management in the business world is a great asset to the Golden
Tornado football program. Pinchotti also holds responsibilities in the recruiting process and is
accountable for garnering many recruits attention to the Geneva program.
Pinchotti spent his playing career at rival Westminster College and graduated in 1986
with an undergraduate degree in Communications, and earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership in 2011 from Geneva College.
Pinchotti resides in North Sewickley Township with his wife, Tonya, and three children: Corinne, Karlee, and Michael.

Jason Wargo

A former standout lineman for the Golden Tornadoes from 1991-94,
Jason Wargo is entering his sixth season as offensive line coach.
“Jason is one of the most loved coaches by his players and he does
a great job of developing the young players,” says Coach Geno
DeMarco. His passion for Geneva College and his loyalty to the
purpose of the Golden Tornadoes football program is what motivates him as a coach.
Wargo played for the Golden Tornadoes in the early 90’s and was on Coach DeMarco’s
first team in 1993. Following his playing days, he began coaching in the high school ranks
at Union in 1995 and 1996 and then at Freedom in 1997. He then moved on to the college

OFFENSE

For the past two seasons, Geneva’s two-headed
quarterbacking monster has caused many sleep
deprived nights for PAC defenses. The Rocco
Colavecchia and Zach Hayward dynamic duo
bring a host of talent and experience into their
senior campaigns. Colavecchia contributed
a team high 23 touch downs in 2012. Even
more impressive, 6 of those touchdowns were
receiving and 14 were bone-crushing rushing
touchdowns. Colavecchia posted 896 rushing
yards for an average of just under 80 yards per
game. Not bad for a quarterback. Dropping
back in the pocket, Colavecchia went 41-82
and threw for 3 touchdowns while averaging
just under 40 yards per game through the air.
Rocco capped off his stellar junior season by
receiving PAC Second Team honors.
If Rocco is the peanut butter, Hayward is the
jelly. With a cannon attached to his shoulder,
Hayward had a 60% completion percentage
and 16 touchdowns while eclipsing the
2,000 passing yard milestone. Add nearly
350 rushing yards to that resume and the
Golden Tornadoes’ quarterbacking tandem
topped out Geneva’s rushing statistics with
over 1,200 yards combined on the ground.
Hayward also received PAC Second Team as
well as All-NCCAA Second Team. I think it
is safe to say that ‘continuous improvement’
must turn to senior dominance for Rocco and
Hayward in 2013.

department as they averaged about 10 yards
less per kick as their opponents. “Special teams
seems like such a small role in the entirety of
the game but when it comes down to it, you
can count on your hand the amount of plays
that mean the difference between a ‘W’ or an
‘L’. The weight of all three phases of the game
measure out to be equally important.” Geno
continues, “With that said, we have a great
group of young men who are enjoying the
learning process and I have no doubts we will
get to see the fruit of that kind of attitude during
the 2013 season in special teams.”

THE COACH

Geno DeMarco continues to add to his
resume as the longest tenured head football
coach at Geneva College, entering into his
21st season. Although DeMarco suffered his
worst record last season ending at 3-7, he still
holds a 128-83 total coaching record for a
total winning percentage of 0.606. Geneva
College’s Interim Athletic Director, Van Zanic
says, “Coach DeMarco is one of the most
well-respected coaches in the PAC. He has
a passion for football and an even stronger
passion for Geneva College and the student-
athletes that go through the program. Geno
and his staff have worked tirelessly to bring
in the largest freshmen class in school history.
Geneva College has a storied football tradition
that dates back to 1890 and Coach DeMarco
has carried the torch for 20 years, which is the
longest tenure of any coach before him. With
the most coaching victories in Geneva football
history, Coach DeMarco will continue to build the
Geneva football program each and every year.”
For Geneva, the theme of ‘continuous
improvement’ will hopefully translate into a
solid 2013 campaign that can propel the
program further along in its winning tradition.
