Ryde Academy
Year 7 Transition Guide
For students and Parents/Carers
Welcome
At Ryde Academy we recognise that each student is an individual with a unique
range of abilities, qualities and aspirations for the future. Our role is to ensure
that all students can maximise their opportunities and outcomes and to allow
them to access their future pathways. We will ensure a personalised and
individual educational experience for all students celebrating the richness and
diversity within our local community.
We believe we have a great deal to offer as the community's local Academy.
Parents are welcome to visit the Academy at any point during the academic
year. We also hold a number of events during the year including a Year 7 ‘Meet
the Tutor’ evening on 11th October and the Year 7 Parents’ Evening on 7th
February 2019.

Year 7 Year Manager
Mrs Deborah Buckley has been working at the Academy for over 15 years. Her
experience is invaluable to ensure that the transition from primary to secondary
school is smooth. Within the Academy, Mrs Buckley will continue to ensure that
students are able to thrive academically and with confidence. As a non-teaching
member of staff, she has time during the day to deal with many day-to-day
issues that affect the students in Year 7. She works closely with Year 7 tutors
and teachers and manages the way in which the Academy checks on the
progress of Year 7 students.
Tutors
Students will see their tutor every morning except on Mondays when their
assembly takes place. Tutors will make sure students are set up for the day and
can speak to them about any issues or concerns they may have.
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Coordinator
Mrs Angela Roberts and her team gather information about any individual SEN
needs from primary schools, to make sure that support and inclusion continues
into and throughout secondary school for students that require it.
Attendance
All absences must be reported on each day that a student is absent, and the
absence must be followed up with a letter or medical card. Any absences not
covered with a letter or medical card will not be authorised. Please address
letters to the Attendance Officer and hand in to Year Managers or reception.
The Pastoral System and Safeguarding
Mrs Jackson is the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSL) and Mr Doyle is the
Deputy Designated Safeguarding Officer (DDSL). If you have any concerns or
worries report it to any member of staff, the DSL or DDSL.

Curriculum
We offer a curriculum which:
Is broad and balanced.
Provides enjoyment, boosts self-esteem and raises aspirations.
Promotes spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Encompasses the acquisition of personal, learning and thinking skills.
Emphasises the importance of Literacy and Numeracy.
Enables students to understand the connections between different
subjects.
Prepares young people for the future.
All students should be equipped with the knowledge, skills and
understanding to achieve as highly as possible at KS4 and beyond.
The curriculum should motivate all students to want to learn.
All students should develop as rounded citizens through the totality of
their educational experience.
All subjects will emphasise the teaching, learning, assessment and
progression in cross curricular skills.
All students should have the opportunity to follow all subjects of the
national curriculum at KS3, including PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and
Emotional education). They should be able to develop intellectually,
creatively, socially and physically.
All students should increasingly experience a curriculum which includes
the study of some themes that cross traditional subject boundaries.
The curriculum is delivered through a 25 lessons a week, each lesson lasting for
60 minutes. In addition there are 5 sessions a week with the tutor through which
PSHE (Personal Social Health and Emotional education) is delivered. In all
subjects we aim to build on the learning that has taken place in the Primary
School at KS2. Broadly we follow the national curriculum at KS3, although we
also aim to prepare our students for GCSE at the end of Year 11, and have
planned curriculum and assessment milestones in all subjects.
In Year 7, all students study the following subjects:
English
Mathematics
Science
Art
Technology - including: food, resistant materials, electronics and textiles

ParentPay
What is ParentPay
We use an automated biometric recognition system which measures an
individuals' thumbprint from which they can access school based accounts. This
is used for students to access printers, photocopiers, and to pay for snacks and
meals in the canteen. ParentPay is a website which allows parents to make
online payments to the Academy for school meals, trips, replacement ties and
much more. If you child receives free school meals they will need to use the
biometric recognition system but you won’t need to add anything to their lunch
account.
When can I log in to my account?
Once you have received your activation letter from us with your activation login
details you will be able to activate your account and start making payments.
Which cards can I use?
ParentPay accepts MasterCard, Visa and American Express credit cards, and
Maestro, Switch, Delta, Electron, Solo and Visa debit cards.
Is it safe to make payments on the internet?
Yes. ParentPay uses leading technology to process your card transactions
securely. All communication with the bank is encrypted and neither ParentPay
nor the school have access to your card details.
I do not have a home PC so how can I use ParentPay?
You can visit your local library, internet café or see if you can get access to a
computer at work. Alternatively you can use PayPoint.
You can find out more on our website under the Parent tab.
Canteen and Seating Arrangements
There are three large canteen spaces. Students
can also sit outside in the three picnic areas. There
is no set seating plan and students mingle and
socialise together throughout the both break
times. The queue goes around the far side of the
canteen and around the olive tree, see picture on
the right:
Student Email
All students usernames are in the format intake year, first initial, full surname.
For example a student called Joe Bloggs, who joins Year 7 in 2018 will have the
username 18JBloggs. Email addresses follow the same pattern as usernames but
we add @rydeacademy.org
All students have their password initially set as rydeacademy. When they first
logon they need to create a secure password with a minimum of 8 characters.
This password will then be synced with their Google account.
Cyber Safety
All computer activity is monitored and protected 24/7 by eSafe. Parents are
asked to speak with their children about internet safety at home. There are links
to a range of resources on our website under the Student and then Stay Safe on
Line tabs . Children learn about safety and proper use of the internet in their
computer studies lessons.
Extra Curricular Clubs
We have a full programme of extra curricular clubs. The programme will handed
out in September.
Lockers
Lockers can be rented directly from a company called Prefect Lockers. Further
information can be found on our website, under the Parent tab, or you can get a
