A pop superstar arrives in Palm Springs.

Andy Warhol harnessed the power of celebrity,
consumer goods, sex, and disaster to create his
iconic Pop Art—and in doing so became a
seminal media figure. This retrospective
of more than 250 works explores how Warhol
elevated printmaking from its previous status as a
commercial format to that of fine art.

Warhol’s career is traced from his earliest work as Opening Night Preview Events

during the 1960s, and the commissioned Private Viewing for President’s Circle
portfolios of his final years. and Invited Guests

A constant throughout his life was a fascination
with Pop culture, as seen in his use of famous Special Presentation: Jordan Schnitzer in
figures like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Dialogue with Eric Shiner, former Director of
Muhammad Ali, events like the Birmingham civil The Andy Warhol Museum and Sotheby’s

Palm Springs Art Museum, Kaplan-Ostergaard
Glass Center
March 24–ongoing

Prepare to be dazzled by the stunning glass center, featuring loans and additions to the collection,
which is quickly becoming one of the most noteworthy in the nation.

From hand stencils in cave paintings to the selfies of today, depictions of people have always been
used as a means of communication. Artists working in glass are no exception and have long been
referencing the human form to express their own stories. This exhibition considers contemporary
narratives in glass and shares the artists’ inspiration for their creations.

This exhibition is organized by Palm Springs Art Museum and co-curated by David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard with consulting curator Victoria 5
Taormina. Support for the exhibition and related educational and outreach programs has been made possible by a grant from Art Alliance for 7

In Conversation illuminates their deep affinity. Both
men created evocative organic work using natural

furniture and sculpture, and also explored
ceramics. Allen is a sculptor and designer whose
work encompasses small objects, furniture and
large sculpture. Each man designed and built his
own home and studio as well as many of the
furnishings and objects in them. The exhibition
also features images taken by Lisa Eisner and
Leslie Williamson, creating a parallel conversation
between these two contemporary photographers.

Experience an exhilarating
exploration of the desert’s
distinctive topography and
the landscapes that
lie beyond.

From across the span of the last century,
20 American photographers capture the spiritual
and natural beauty of the desert. It’s a visual
narrative across the land, from panoramic views
to distant and isolated places. Be a witness as
the artists use their camera to investigate the
allure and beauty of the desert while also
confronting the harsh realities of an
extreme environment.

From the work of Palm Springs icon Stephen H.
Willard to contemporary photographers like
Mark Klett and Karen Halverson, you’ll never look
at our desert backyard in the same way.

NEW ACQUISITIONS

Yet another reason to visit the museum on a regular
basis: our recent acquisitions. Here are just three of
the diverse and distinctive new pieces that now grace
our walls...

Exploring Hidden Landscapes of the American West

Two new textile works by Jessie Homer French tell a story about the
American West and the sometimes unstable landscape that lies beneath
its surface. Hyper-aware of the environment around her, French’s
“mapestries” combine the words map and tapestry, and are artworks
made specifically for earthquake-prone California. In this piece, a bold
red San Andreas fault line illustrates her signature approach to
representing the land with beauty and threat, life and death, co-existing
at all times. The work is on view in the Western Stories exhibition

Gifts of Glass

The museum’s growing collection of contemporary glass has been
expanded with the addition of two sculptures by Laura Donefer and Beth
Lipman. They are among the artists who emerged after the 1960s Studio
Glass movement when the invention of the compact furnace freed them
to create works in their own studios. These two pieces are included in the
exhibition No Glass Ceiling! Women Working in Glass, Part 1 on view in
the Kaplan-Ostergaard Glass Center through March 5, 2018.

Paul Davies’ Built Landscapes

An emerging Australian visual artist currently working in Los Angeles,
Davies combines painting, stenciling, photography, and sculpture. His
canvases often reflect a Southern Californian sensibility with images of
built environments that regularly feature palm trees, bodies of water, and
modernist architecture. The painting is on view in the Western
Stories exhibition.
