August 26, 2017–January 15, 2018

Kinesthesia: Latin American Kinetic Art,
1954–1969

Palm Springs Art Museum, Annenberg Wing
Kinesthesia: Latin American Kinetic Art, 1954–1969 is the first in-depth exploration of the pioneering role
played by South American artists in the international Kinetic Art movement of the 1950s–60s.
Until now, Kinetic Art has been studied almost exclusively as a phenomenon launched in the 1955 Paris
exhibition, Le Mouvement. What Kinesthesia makes evident is that, far from being a European
invention, Kinetic Art had clear artistic roots in the South American artistic vanguards of the late 1940s
and early 1950s. Although a handful of iconic 20th-century American sculptors would achieve great
impact working within its framework, as a movement Kinetic Art had few adherents in the U.S.
For that reason, with its more than fifty examples of work made by nine artists over a fifteen-year
period, Kinesthesia is the first-ever museum overview of Kinetic Art in Southern California. With their
stylistic affinities to the local Light and Space movement of the late 1960s–1970s, these Latin American
Kinetic Artists provide an essential bridge: they connect the major Modernist Art movements of the
early 20th century with the ongoing experiments in technology and perception that have defined the
art of the intervening fifty years through today.

Albert Frey and Lina Bo Bardi:
A Search for Living Architecture

Architecture and Design Center
Trina Turk Gallery

Albert Frey and Lina Bo Bardi: A Search for Living Architecture is an
unprecedented exploration of two visionary masters who critically
expanded the meaning and practice of modern architecture. Frey emigrated
from Switzerland to the United States in 1930 and Bo Bardi emigrated from
Italy to Brazil in 1946. Though the two did not meet, Bo Bardi translated
and published Frey’s treatise In Search of Living Architecture in the
Italian magazine Domus, and their personal and professional odysseys are
representative of the emergence of São Paulo and Southern California as
architectural and cultural laboratories in the middle of the 20th century. They
each created modernist houses, furniture, public buildings, and approaches
to urban design that move beyond strict rationalism to embrace the social
and environmental contexts specific to their adoptive homes in Brazil and
Southern California. Bo Bardi and Frey shared a belief in architecture as a
way to connect people, nature, building, and living. While employing
modern technologies, they responded to the climate and terrain of the
local environment, and to the people whose personal and social experiences
were touched by those conditions.

No Glass Ceiling!
Women Working in Glass, Part 1

October 14, 2017–March 5, 2018
Palm Springs Art Museum, Kaplan-Ostergaard Glass Center

Women have always played an integral part in the American studio glass movement and they continue
to expand the medium’s possibilities through today’s global communication and collaboration
opportunities. Part 1 of this exhibition portrays the diverse working styles and intriguing range of
concepts that women have expressed through the fluid medium of glass. Whether reaching back to
cultural or historical perspectives and past innovations or, sharing technical and aesthetic content, these
vital artists are creating versatile new approaches to the art form. By holding, emitting or reflecting light,
the glass creations on view reveal extraordinary range and beauty.

November 3, 2017–January 28, 2018
Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert,
The Galen

Members Meet the Artist and Private Viewing
Friday, December 1, 3–4 p.m.

Bob Van Breda’s Lost and Found is an
immersive exhibition featuring discarded
industrial and natural objects that have been
transformed by the artist’s eye and hand into
aesthetic forms. Channeling his ongoing
fascination with objects from everyday life,
Van Breda’s sensitivity to the beauty and power
of seemingly unwanted things raises questions
about authorship, creativity, personal affinities,
and cultural purpose. Ranging in size from
miniature and hand-held to oversized, the
artist’s sculptures emphasize materiality,
texture, and shape. Van Breda’s installation
continues a longstanding inquiry into the nature
of art by referencing the conceptual history of
the readymade and art-making processes such
as assemblage, collage, and site-specificity.

Van Breda studied architecture at Cal Poly-
San Luis Obispo and received his Bachelor of
Fine Art from California State University-Los
Angeles. Recent exhibitions include Santa Monica
Museum of Art, Manhattan Beach Art Center,
Electric Works, and Heather James Fine Art.

NEW ACQUISITIONS, TALKS AND TOURS

Join us this season for Fridays with a Curator as four new
acquisitions debut, each with an illuminating and thought-
provoking lecture. For details, visit psmuseum.org. The talks are
free with admission and will commence from the front desk.

Armando Lerma, Shoplifter
Select Fridays at noon
Education Director: Leondardo Bravo, Free with museum admission
Coachella-based artist Armando Lerma’s work combines elements
of folk and religious imagery, Pop Art, and commercial advertising.
This 2014 mixed media piece implies a single stereotype, but Lerma’s
imagery undermines a simplistic reading of the boy depicted,
suggesting instead an all-American teenager.

Subodh Gupta, Untitled
Select Fridays at noon
Curator: Mara Gladstone, Free with museum admission
New Delhi-based Subodh Gupta uses ordinary stainless steel
kitchen and cooking utensils to create sculptures and installations.
In doing so, he demonstrates art’s ability to transcend cultural and
economic boundaries.

David Hockney, The Card Players
Select Fridays at noon
Curator: Katherine Hough, Free with museum admission
Throughout his 50-year career, David Hockney has experimented
with technology including works like his 2015 piece, The Card Players,
which he terms a “photographic drawing.” Hockney’s new technique
embraces the digital age and pushes the sense of spatial dimension.

This is Bob Hope..., a new film from PBS
American Masters, is a candid look at a
remarkable life. By any measure, Hope was one
of the most popular entertainers of the 20th
century. To examine his career is to look at the
evolution of comedy in America. This new film
includes an exploration of Bob and Dolores
Hope’s love of the desert where they built and
lived in iconic Palm Springs “dream homes.”
They were also founders and donors of
Eisenhower Medical Center on Bob Hope Drive
