The Benefits of
Learning

The Importance of Adult Learning

Adult education at its best connects people, helps to reduce
loneliness or feelings of isolation within communities ; it can instill a

sense of empowerment through the joy of learning and help
people get back to work or positively change direction.

Adjusting to a new phase in life, such as retirement or parenthood,
represents another form of transition which can be aided by the

support, new skills and new interests that adult education can offer.

Skills Improved by Adult Learning

Subject knowledge Critical Thinking
Confidence Language
Creativity
Self Esteem Problem solving
Computer Skills
Communication
Numeracy

The link between
learning and wellbeing...

Participation in adult learning is found to have significant
positive effects on individual health, employability, social

relationships, and the likelihood of participating in
voluntary work. In turn these four areas have positive

impacts on individual wellbeing.

WELLBEING

Learning is one of the 5 ways to wellbeing so why not try
something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that
course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike.
Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favorite food.

Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving!

Learning new things will make you more confident as
well as being fun!

My Perfect Day involves...

Spending time on my allotment or garden and maybe a bike ride, a walk or a
swim or a bit of sewing. Oh, and preferably a bit of warm sunshine and a good

meal in the evening. Perfect!

I'm always best remembered for my...

That's a difficult one. I'd like to think I'm cheerful and friendly as well as
efficient and approachable.

My Career highlight is...

Being assessed as outstanding as a tutor at my last assessment. Now I have to
keep it up!

Why did you become an Adult Education Tutor?

Just because I thought it would be fun! I'd done a bit of work previously at

ashleyLifelong Learning helping with the technology and the learners, and liked the

interaction with people. Lifelong Learning offered me the chance to train and

lawsonbecome qualified to teach, so I took that opportunity. Being able to pass on my
knowledge on subjects I enjoy, and then seeing others enjoy them as well is
very satisfying.

What is it you like best about being an Adult Education Tutor?

Seeing learners grow in knowledge and confidence as well as (importantly)
enjoying themselves, producing satisfying results and meeting new people.

I really enjoy the job, it doesn't feel like work!

My Perfect Day involves...

I am an avid reader and especially enjoy historical novels. I love the islands,
and walking my dogs around this beautiful and peaceful place is food for my
soul. I also love to cook and take great pleasure in making food for my family

and friends.

I'm always best remembered for my...

I like to think that I am probably best remembered for my sense of humour and

as a teller of tales. Any given situation will spark a memory. and I can always

come up with a story to match the occasion.

My Career highlight is...

My highlight has to be the wonderful outcome for Alan Matthews, who has been
my student at Lifelong Learning working towards his Entry Level English. Alan

achieved this qualification a few weeks ago and I don’t think I have had a
prouder moment for a very long time.

ashleyWhy did you become an Adult Education Tutor?

I have had a varied career and have been fortunate to work with students from

lawsonthe age of 5 to 65 and found every age group to be interesting and challenging.

But I think I have an affinity with adults and really enjoy the interaction that
takes place in a class of adult learners, who really want to be there.

What is it you like best about being an Adult Education Tutor?

This has to be the people I meet, people who have experienced life and can
contribute to lessons with their own experiences which always enhances the

learning for everyone.

Functional Maths Level 1 & 2

My Perfect Day involves...

After finishing my B&B work, I love to have a sunny walk with my little Jack
Russell, Daisy. I'll then meet up with friends for a sea swim followed by a

relaxing evening on an off island beach with my husband Todd, Daisy, a BBQ
and a bottle of sparkling Rose.

I'm always best remembered for my. ...

Grey hair (which I have had since my 20's) and being adventurous in the sea.

My Career highlight is...

On behalf of the Council, setting up an Adult Learning Centre for residents
on the Isles of Scilly.

Why did you become an Adult Education Tutor?

ashleyWorking for the Council I had some experience of teaching adults how to use

computers. Together with my experience of book-keeping at the Council,

lawsonMainland Marketing and my B&B I felt it was time to pass on some of my

knowledge to help others in Maths.

What is it you like best about being an Adult Education Tutor?

The joy on the faces of students when their confidence grows.
I also really enjoy meeting new people and hearing about the challenges they

have faced in past learning experiences at school or later.

Evans- Officer: Learning
The day Alan took and passed his final exam was
momentous for all of us at Lifelong Learning, who have and Library
shared this journey with him. Alan had to take three
separate exams in Reading, Writing and Speaking and
Listening and passed all three with 100%. When I asked
him if he would like to continue with his studies, his reply
was typical of Alan’s wry sense of humour as he
announced with a very straight face that he wanted to
take a “Gap Year”! Needless to say Alan is not taking a
gap year and is keen to carry on his studies and move up
to the next level.

We were delighted to welcome Alan and his
parents, along with all the staff from Lifelong
Learning, to a celebration of Alan’s achievements
and present him with his certificates, eat cake
and enjoy Alan’s amazing success. Over my years
of teaching I have attended many presentations
such as this but I must confess that this one was
extra special. Well done Alan we are all very
proud of you. - Sonia Scott- Tutor
