DOUGAL GRAHAM, YEAR 6

Bernard Herrmann was an American citizen born on the 29th June 1911. He
started composition when he was only in his teens and his incredible talent
was recognised and he was invited to join composition classes at New York

University while he was still at High School.
By the time he was 23 he had the job of conductor and arranger at CBS
radio. Herrmann wanted more so he began working with another young
man; Orson Wells. They together created a famous radio collaboration.
War of the Worlds. This was famous for being such a lifelike radio story that

thousands of listeners thought it was the news.
Later, in Herrmann’s career he mastered the sound of close microphoning.

For example, in one piece Herrmann put together a Base Flute and the
Kettle Drums. By putting the microphone closer to the flute, he could just

about balance out the textures of sound.
In another film, The Day the Earth Stood Still he used, an instrument called
the Theremin. He turned this from a Russian novelty played by people like
Lenin for a joke to the voice of science fiction. This instrument was later used

in famous science fiction scores like Doctor Who and even Star Trek.
Later Herrmann began to work with a director which would give him the
ability to change film for ever; Alfred Hitchcock. In a film called Psycho he
only used the backbone of the orchestra. The strings. This film was a low
budget film shot in black and white. Psycho’s music isn’t just gripping and
shocking in the movie but on its own it can give a similar feel. Not only
did he ask the strings to play with minimum vibrato but to play the whole
piece, apart from the murder scenes, with their mutes on. First there are
four identical stabbing cords. At the core of these cords there is an interval
known as a major 7th. The major 7th on its own sounds sharp and dry,
not easy for the ear. If you are going to use this device in film, you would
normally add extra notes to make it sound bluesy. Herrmann was too much
of an innovator to do this and kept the raw, dry sound. This is why I believe

that Herrmann should most be recognised as a great composer.
