CEO’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

It gives me immense pleasure to share with you the 2nd edition of the quarterly e-maga-
zine, Urja – a power communique.

In Quarter II, the teams across units worked together and relentlessly showcased team
spirit and commitment towards becoming a world-class organization. Firstly, I would like
to congratulate Team TSPL for their outstanding efforts in operationalizing all the units
with COD in place and Team Coal for successfully securing domestic coal in recently
concluded e-coal auctions.

I would also like to congratulate and appreciate the phenomenal response towards
“Waste to Value” competition and I am certain that once the evaluation process is con-
cluded, we would have many great and feasible innovative ideas in our hands.

I would further encourage Team F-10 to drive the $400/ton power cost in Aluminum
which can only be delivered by optimizing performance, improving efficiencies, adapt-
ing innovative technologies and breakthrough ideas.

I’m happy to see inputs provided by the units in formulation of this edition and expect
continuation of the momentum that has been created.

Lastly, I would urge each and everyone to put in their best efforts with high focus on
>95% efficiency, availability, PLF and creating benchmarks.

Keep Learning!

Regards
Ajay Kumar Dixit

From COO’s Desk

Dear Colleagues,

October was the month of festivals and I am sure you all must have enjoyed
the festivals to the fullest and it is really heartening to get an opportunity to
talk to you through the 2nd edition of newly launched magazine (Urja) of
power vertical just after the festival of lights.

With Aluminium smelter ramp up at Jharsuguda and Balco, power vertical is faced with new chal-
lenges of managing increased amount of coal, improving the reliability of the newly commissioned
units at Balco and overcoming technical challenges at Jharsuguda.

The Team Balco has successfully handled the challenges related to coal unloading, Coal Mill issues
and Boiler tube leakages in a planned manner and now all the 300 MW units are back in operation.
With the truck tippler getting commissioned by Jan’17 end, situation will ease out further and I hope,
the team would be in a stronger position to build up the requisite pre- monsoon coal stocks to avoid
the issues faced during the last monsoon. My congratulations to the Team Balco for quick
stabilization of the newly commissioned units by resolving the teething problems.

The complex nature of power connectivity has challenged the Team Jharsuguda really hard in the
past and team has been trying its best to get the CTU connectivity for Smelter 2. The untiring ef-
forts have brought results and from 24th October’16 onwards the Smelter 2 is connected with CTU.
However, our current challenge is to get the Sundergarh line commissioned at the earliest to improve
further reliability. The technical issues at Jharsuguda are getting resolved and I have full confidence
that the power team at Jharsuguda would be able to meet the demand of Smelter 2 reliably for a
smooth smelter ramp up.

Malco is currently experiencing the heat of low power demand, low cost of power in the market and
increased import coal price. The team has come up with many new innovative ideas in this difficult
scenario to keep the business going and they are moving at a very fast pace on all these options and
I wish them all the best in their efforts. With all the three units of TSPL getting declared “Commercial”,
our challenge is to reach to a Plant Availability Factor of more than 80% in FY-17 and I am hopeful
that from Nov’17 onwards, TSPL will achieve no less than an availability of 95% going forward. My
best wishes are with Team TSPL in their effort to create a world class power station in line with the
vision of our respected Chairman.

Once again, all the best to Team Power across all the locations and wish you all a safe and environ-
ment friendly journey while taking the business to newer heights. Keep yourself and your associates
safe, healthy and happy.

Regards,
Anil Kumar Singh
COO Power

IN CONVERSATION...

About:
A Stanford alumnus with almost 30 years of diverse

experience, Peter has been involved in Material Engineering

throughout and has 7 patents on diverse technologies

ranging from a new organic molecule used in aerospace, an

armoured window system and manufacturing aids for Peter R. Ciriscioli
composite materials.
Innovation Consultant
Vedanta Ltd.
Views on innovation:
Innovation gives anyone and everyone a chance to add meaning to their work

and a thrill to see their idea at work. Therefore, one should continually strive to

innovate, so that it becomes more than just their job.

Role model and inspirtion:
Prof. George Springer - Peter’s thesis advisor at Stanford has been his role mod-
el. Prof. Springer managed to escape Hungary when the Russians invaded and
faced lots of hardships, even got shot; but still ended up being a professor at
Stanford and has also been part of various space shuttle programs. In other
words, he never gave up making him an inspirational personality.

Motivation:
Peter’s mother used to say,“If you think you are doing the right thing for the right
reason, then keep on going.”. These lines resonated with Peter and still do.

Innovation, strategy and leadership:
According to Peter, one cannot have innovation without a strategy and there is
no strategy without leadership. All three work together in a unison. What best
describes it the mouse trap theory, which works on realization and an innovator’s
ability to understand the psyche of the customer.

Passion:
Peter’s passionate about making a difference in whatever work he does. In other

words, having to do something in life that has some meaning to it, and, which

impacts other people’s life. 28
