Siblings Mordy and Jane communicate like proper millennials: primarily through text message and loaded with sarcasm. Their lives flailing on opposite coasts, they hatch an outrageous plan to relieve their mother of the burden of Zad-Zad, their centenarian – and particularly prickly – grandfather. A world premiere dark comedy for the digital age, The Burdens explores pop culture, connection, and the value of actual face time.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

“Dying is easy – comedy is hard.” So said a famous comedian on his

deathbed—although no one can agree on who said it; apparently the attribution died
with the comedian. Regardless, anyone in show business knows the truth of this
statement. It takes skill to make people laugh. It is also true that most comedy springs
from tragic circumstances. The higher the stakes, the funnier things tend to get. Like
killing your family members … who hasn’t wanted to do THAT?!

Playwright Matt Schatz has calibrated a perfect comedy for the age we live in. Many
people talk to others through texts, emails, and instant messages more than they do in
live person-to-person interactions. These mediums lend themselves to
misunderstanding and, when the consequences of our miscommunications are life and
death issues, we have a recipe for a good time. Or a tragic one. Who knows how things
work out? Probably we take ourselves much too seriously. Probably we all have good
intentions and sometimes others just don’t understand us. Or do they?

Giving life to this world premiere has been a joy. We took the challenge very seriously.
Really, we did. City Theatre’s relationship with Matt Schatz goes back to when he was in
graduate school at Carnegie Mellon, and his work has been of interest for his sharp ear,
crisp dialogue, and compelling characters. The Burdens was work-shopped and
developed in last year’s Momentum new play festival among other venues around the
country. We welcome you to this sparkling new play and send it out into the world with
the knowledge that while comedy may be hard, it is also worth it.

DONOR BENEFITS

Chris Larkin performing in Nomad Motel by Carla Ching, which received both a workshop and its world
premiere at City Theatre last season. After its debut on our Main Stage here in Pittsburgh in May 2018, the
play will receive productions at theaters in Atlanta and Kansas City before making its Off-Broadway debut
at the prestigious Atlantic Theater Company in New York City this spring. Photo by Kristi Jan Hoover.

Why Give?

New plays are risky, but essential. New plays capture the tenor of

society and tell the unique stories of contemporary life. And City Theatre continues
to be a national leader in shaping the field. But ticket sales account for less than
30% of our annual budget – the rest comes from a generous network of
community contributors. We rely on the support of these donors so that artists
have the opportunity to create freely and boldly. Nomad Motel will forever be
known as having its world premiere in Pittsburgh and you make this possible.
From the earliest readings to stunning world premieres, our patrons and artists
together develop the future of the American theater. Please consider making a
tax-deductible contribution today.
