A recent study by Sifuentes and Gerba in Arizona,
USA, has shown that washed cleaning cloths routinely
hold bacterial contamination.

In 93% (28/30) of the cloths received from 10
different hospitals as samples, viable bacteria were
detected after washing. Cotton cloths have been
used in 8 hospitals while microfiber cloths have
been used in 3 hospitals, and 3 cloths have been
taken as sample for each hospital.
Average bacteria amount has been measured to be
133 CFU/cm2. Some of the identified species are
Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and Aspergillus.
Microfiber cloths have been found to carry more
bacteria than cotton cloths, showing that washing is
more difficult.
This study has increased the interest in use of
disposable materials (namely disposable disinfected
wipes) in USA.

Maintenance

Portable equipment causes a risk for patients if the
equipment is cleaned less frequently. For this
reason, the cleaning of medical devices used extra
corporeally is very important in hospital hygiene.

What are the important
points in medical device
cleaning?

Contaminated devices should not be left to dry. Because, it is really
difficult process to clean dried dirt and organic waste. Tools should
be kept moist until cleaned. However, transporting them in water
or other liquids is inconvenient. For this reason, after dirt is
removed roughly, they should be covered with a wet towel and
transported to the Central Sterilization Unit (CSU) in closed
containers.
Neutral or enzymatic detergents are generally preferred for
cleaning devices. If alkali detergent is used in automatic
washing machines, then neutralization process should be
applied for the instruments not to be damaged from the
resiudes. Manufacturer information should be complied with
and solutions should be prepared on a daily basis. The solution
should be changed when there is excessive contamination.
In automatic washing machines low-
foaming, easy to rinse detergents and
enzymatic cleaners are preferred.
Slightly alkaline detergents are preferred
in plastic materials as they provide more
effective cleaning.
