In 2019, we continued our commitment to cutting-edge research, further cementing the Institute’s position as a global
leader in genomics. We made great strides in human health, with discoveries in Alzheimer’s and other diseases.
HudsonAlpha’s plant genomics team continued its efforts toward crop sustainability and alternative biofuels.
In addition, support like yours benefited families in North Alabama and beyond. HudsonAlpha researchers continued
to expand their impact, providing much-needed diagnoses for hundreds of families. Your generosity also supported the
Smith Family Clinic, which helps patients from near and far in their quests for medical answers. Through HudsonAlpha’s
Information is Power initiative,more than 4,200 women and men have learned about their hereditary cancer risks,helping
people make informed decisions about their health care.
In the last school year, more than 1.2 million students, teachers and lifelong learners engaged with HudsonAlpha’s
educational programs, inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Advancing neurological disease
research

Your gifts helped support neurodegenerative projects in the Dr.
Richard M.Myers Lab.He and his team are working to develop
earlier diagnostics,new treatments and targeted therapies that
could impact Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, Huntington’s disease
and dementia. “This funding will go a long way to help under-
stand the underpinnings of these devastating diseases,” said
Dr. Myers. Thank you for your help in exploring new ideas
for neurodegenerative research!

Expanding plant sciences & sustainable agriculture

Research innovation means more insight. Your support ensures that we advance our under-
standing of the natural world to accelerate improvements of sustainable food, fiber and fuel
crops by applying genomic technologies. To date, more than half of the world’s genome
sequences from complex plant genomes available to the public have been completed by
HudsonAlpha’s plant sciences group. As the world grows, the need to do more with fewer
resources increases. You are helping make that happen.

Unlocking the secrets of cancer Health &
Wellness
Your support is giving researchers the ability to un-
derstand cancer in new, innovative ways. Scientists
are exploring new opportunities for earlier detec-
tion, better treatments and targeted therapies in

440 total patient visits Robert “Bob” Barnette was born at a time when ge-
netic testing was still new to the medical field, so
when he began showing signs of developmental
delay, the pediatrician could not provide a diag-
nosis. His mother, Carol, spent more than 50 years
searching for answers when recently her search led
her to the Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine at HudsonAlpha.
Based on his history and appearance, the clinical team suspected that
Bob had a particular developmental disorder called Williams
syndrome. Genetic testing revealed their suspicions were correct.
Williams syndrome is a developmental disorder that affects 1 in 10,000
people and occurs due to missing genetic material on chromosome 7.
Most cases of Williams syndrome develop sporadically and are not
inherited.

“I was so in the dark,” Carol said. “I know there are a lot of other mothers
out there who feel the same way and have no idea what’s going on.
I just hope that I can be an advocate for those who need to know this
information.”

Thanks to your philanthropic support, the Smith Family Clin-
ic for Genomic Medicine is able to offer financial assistance to
qualifying patients through the Hero Fund and change lives like
the Barnettes.

Fueling the pipeline for STEM careers

Thanks to you, our education programs continue to thrive. With add-
ed space in the Propst Center, HudsonAlpha has increased the num-
ber of field trips by more than 70 percent. The middle school teacher
training program expanded this year to engage more educators.
In the 2018-19 school year, HudsonAlpha’s educational programs
impacted more than 4,500 teachers through educator training pro-
grams. We added a new cohort to the Launching Aspiring Biotech-
nology Students (LABS) program, a program to prepare underserved
students for career paths in STEM fields. Your gifts help inspire and
train the next generation of STEM leaders.
