Laura Board | Candlewood Suites - Deer Park

I am the Director of Sales/Marketing for Candlewood Suite Deer Park, an extended stay
Hotel with multiple room types including Singles, Doubles, Suites, and Handicapped rooms.
We are perfect for the extended stay corporate travelers, traveling families, or even families
that have been displaced due to catastrophe such as flooding/fire, or just moving, and
haven’t found that perfect home. We also are a pet friendly hotel, so you may bring your
pets with you, rather than leaving them at home or in a shelter. All rooms are equipped
with Kitchenettes, that include a full-size refrigerator, two burner stovetop, pots pans, plates
utensils, silverware, dishwasher, microwave etc. We also have a free laundry mat, gym, and
gas grill which is in our gazebo area just steps away from the pool. We have been in the
Deer Park/ Pasadena area for almost 10 years, and our Hotel is still looking great! We offer
numerous different Corporate rates that include, Group, Military, AARP, AAA & more!
I always considered myself outgoing, but when it came to crowds, I was a little intimidated.
Since joining the Pasadena Chamber a year ago, I have been going to many functions
and getting involved with the community. The Chamber family has tremendously helped
me with being more confident and vocal in crowds and answering all my questions while always being positive
and motivating. I have connected with new people and businesses that I never would have met with or even
heard of. I love to volunteer at functions and go to as many ribbon cuttings as possible. I am very proud to be an
Ambassador for the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

History Of The Pasadena
Volunteer Fire Department
October is Fire Prevention Month

The Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department was organized in
the summer of 1930 with twenty-five (25) members, led by
Joe Fels, Fire Chief. Through the untiring efforts of these 25
firefighters, the loss of life and property, due to fire, was held
to a minimum during the lean years of the small town of old
Pasadena.

The first piece of apparatus, an American LaFrance pumper
was purchased in 1929 and the second truck, a Ford, was
purchased in 1941. The 1929 American LaFrance, endearingly
called “Old Betsy” still remains in our fleet of apparatus and is
proudly displayed during parades and other special events.

Today our Department is led by Lanny Armstrong, Fire Chief,
and consists of 200 volunteers, serving a population of
approximately 150,000 citizens, covering 54 square miles. We
provide fire protection with over 40 pieces of apparatus and
operate from nine (9) fire stations located throughout the City.

The Pasadena Fire Department remains the largest single municipal volunteer fire department in the United States and has attained
a Public Protection Classification (ISO Rating) of Class I, which is the highest classification for Fire Departments. This rating provides
significant cost savings for both residential and commercial fire insurance rates.

Although techniques and equipment have changed over the years, the dedication of those who founded this Department has
not wavered. Still today we continue as a proud group of men and women, striving each day to protect our neighbors from the
ravages of fire.

Our Department responds to approximately 170 alarms per month within the City Limits, including rescue calls and hazardous
material responses. While providing fire protection to the City of Pasadena, our Department is an active member of the Channel
Industries Mutual Aid (CIMA) and also provides mutual aid fire protection with adjoining Cities, Ellington Field, Johnson Space Center,
the University of Houston-Clear Lake and the City of Taylor Lake.

As with any volunteer organization we are constantly looking for volunteers who are interested in making a difference in their
community. Becoming a fire fighter is physically demanding and dangerous work and there is a chance you will get injured. Being a
member of the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department requires a great commitment of time from the fire fighter and also their family.
Our most successful fire fighters owe their success to the support from their families. Since we are a volunteer fire department, our
members are on call 24 hours a day,7 days a week, 365 days a year. The fire fighter must balance their time between a job, family,
friends, church and the fire department. This puts a great strain on the fire fighter’s personal life. The average Pasadena Fire Fighter
is 43 years old and has 12 years of experience in the department. It takes a special person to balance all these commitments and
to be a successful member of the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department you will have to complete an application,
have a background check performed, pass a physical and an agility test. Once this is completed the fire department will run a
14 week academy that meets 6:00 -10:00 on Tuesday and Thursday nights and all day Saturday. The academy is time consuming
and physically demanding but we are teaching you skills that will save people’s lives. We will teach you the basics of firefighting,
rescue and hazards materials. Upon completion of the academy the fire cadet will test for SFFMA Basic Fire Fighter Certification. This
certification is a requirement in order to join the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department.

Your Chamber Is Hiring!

Your Pasadena Chamber Board of Directors and staff have been busy this year listening to the needs of our members and creating
solutions that add value to our member organizations.

In 2019, we have introduced several new events and programs, marketing & promotional benefits, and new committees to engage

for all new and prospective members as well as engaging current members on a regular basis.

Erin Webb will now be the Director of Marketing & Media, continuing the marketing, media, and communication efforts as well as
leading the way on sponsorship sales and providing you the best opportunities to promote your business through existing marketing
opportunities and exciting new advertising benefits to be released soon!

Jamie Huffar will shift her focus to the internal operations, governance and functions of the Chamber as the Director of Finance &
Operations.

We will now be recruiting an additional team member to serve as the Member Services Coordinator! This administrative position will
