APTA National Board Safari Tips and Memories

SAFARI TIPS LISA GREYHILL: Single use plastic bags are banned in some
countries. Be sure to check in advance if your destination
is included in the ban. As an alternative to keep your
electronics dry and sand free, get yourself some “dry bags”...
they’re easier to find and more affordable today than in the past... and you can
use them over and over! Get a Pelican (or similar) case if you have items that
require a hard shell.

SAFARI MEMORY KIKI PARIS: I’ve had so many incredible memories throughout
Africa although one will forever stand out – climbing Mt.
Kilimanjaro during a full moon on the Machame Route. It was
a big birthday and I had to summit to prove age was just a
number. I was the first and only person, along with my guide,
at the summit the entire time. Truly magnificent and a testament to willpower.
Afterwards I went on safari and saw my first wildebeest and zebra migration – an
awe-inspiring two weeks.

SAFARI MEMORY KIRSTY PERRING: We are fortunate to have been able to take our son on all our safari trips
since he was 2, and he has witnessed some incredible wildlife experiences. He has also
missed a few! On one particular evening drive in the Sabi Sands we came across a leopard
with an impala, and a very feisty hyena was trying to steal it from him. There was a huge ruckus with
the hyena screeching and the leopard growling as they each tugged on the impala. It was loud and exciting,
but Travis who was 5 at the time, had fallen asleep and missed the whole thing! When taking young kids on safari
I always recommend having a private vehicle so you are able to do the game drives at your own pace and not
disturb the experience for other guests!

SAFARI MEMORY DAVID DIGREGORIO: While exploring Cape Point in South
Africa, we always tell guests to make sure doors and windows
are shut around wild baboon troops. But this one time, when
our guests got out to take some photos, they left the back
hatch of the van open. In no time, and with two people still in the vehicle, a
baboon made his way in through the back and stole the purse of one of our group
members! He escaped out the way he came in, purse in hand, and proceeded to
carry it into some nearby bushes, dump everything out and rummage through it
all. Thankfully, he eventually abandoned the pile of belongings which included our
guests’ wallet and passport!
SAFARI TIPS
JESSIE BLIGH: There is one thing that I always like to recommend to guests going on safari;
take it in. Try to put down your camera (after getting a few shots of course!) and enjoy
the sights, sounds and even smells of Africa. There have been so many times where I’ve been on
safari and so obsessed with getting that perfect picture that I hardly remember the interaction itself. Now, I try to
remember to snap a few good photos for memory but really make the effort to slow down and enjoy meeting
the eyes of a Silverback or that lioness playing with her cubs.

SAFARI MEMORY CHERYLE VELSOR: Traveling to Africa for the last 20 years, I
I have enjoyed many safaris and experiences but the most
memorable for me is when I get a chance to “dine with the
locals”. Enjoying the culture and hospitality of the people is what
cherish most of all. Here is a photo of my dining experience in Kayamandi.
