New Home Sales in Israel Jump 42%
There were 32,456 new homes bought in Israel in 2019, up 42% from
2018, according to Central Bureau of Statistics data, Globes reported.

The most new homes were bought in Ramat Gan, with 1,583;
it was followed by Herzliya and Tel Aviv.

The amount of mortgages taken out reached an all-time high,
as many of the homes were bought under the Buyer Fixed Price
Plan. While the bureau didn’t state the percentage of homes sold at
subsidized prices, other data it has published pegs it at about 45%.

Teen Killed on Scooter Rented it Illegally
A Tel Aviv teen who was killed Feb. 12 while riding an electric
scooter that was hit by a cement mixer truck, rented it illegally,
according to The Jerusalem Post.

Daniel Cohen, 13, rented the scooter by using someone else’s
personal information, Maariv reported.

American company Lime leased the scooter, but company
rules call for users to present proof that they are at least 18 and
own a credit card. The company said it is investigating how the
boy was able to bypass its rules.

Scooters have become increasingly popular in Israel, but problems
have cropped us as well, especially with younger, inexperienced drivers.

The 17-year-old son of film producer Avi Nesher died in a
scooter accident in Tel Aviv in September.

And model Shlomit Malka was hit by an electric scooter
in 2017. After she recovered from her injuries, she led a safety
campaign that encouraged people to wear helmets. l

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia
mobilizes financial and volunteer resources to
address the communities’ most critical priorities
locally, in Israel and around the world.

‘Community Portrait’ of Jewish Community Unveiled

ON FEB. 11 AT THE INDEPENDENCE VISITOR CENTER, the Jewish
Federation of Greater Philadelphia unveiled the highly anticipated results of its
new population survey.

Known as “Community Portrait: A 2019 Jewish Population Study,” the
survey revealed the first new comprehensive set of data in 10 years examining
the socio-economic, demographic and public health shifts that have occurred in
Greater Philadelphia’s Jewish communities.

Conducted by the research firm Westat and overseen by a lay leadership
and technical advisory committee led by Sara and Adam Laver, “Community
Portrait” was the first to use address-based sampling to study a Jewish com-
munity in the United States. More information on “Community Portrait,”
including a list of upcoming town halls and community meetings, can be found at
jewishphilly.org/populationstudy.

Speakers at the press conference to announce the results. From left: Councilman
Allan Domb, author Jennifer Weiner, Jewish Federation Board Chair Susanna Lachs Adler,
Sara Laver, state Rep. Jared Solomon and Adam Laver

Adam Laver speaks at the event alongside his wife, Sara Laver. Jennifer Weiner (left) entertained the audience with stories about her Jewish children.

Event attendees enjoy Jennifer Weiner’s remarks. Darby Steiger of Westat presents the study’s key findings.
