ABOUHTermanus

Hermanus is a little seaside village very well-known for its whale watching and vast mountain scapes. It
has an abundance of beaches in the Walker Bay that only ad to its charm. It used to be a little fishermans
village making it full of rich culture. It is an ideal holiday destination and is always filled to the brim with
tourists and holiday makers in the warmer months.

A COUPLE OF THINGS YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING

ACTIVITIHEiSking

There are endless amounts of well maintained hiking trails in Hermanus and its surrounds.
One of these trails is the 10km cliff path that runs from the New Harbour to Grotto beach passing through a
couple of landmarks: Fick’s pool, Bientangs cave, the Old Harbour, The Marine pool and loads more. There
are many access points to this magnificent pathway so you can decide how long you’d like to walk for.
Another example of Hermanus’ wonderful trails is the 50kms of very well maintained trails through the
Fernkloof Nature Reserve where you will come across an incredible amount of different bird and plant
species and you may eve spot the odd little buck or a troop of cheaky baboons. You could do all these trails
on your own or you can book a guided tour that will cater for any fitness levels and provide expert information
about all the fauna and flora you come across on your tour.
Another very special hiking option would be to do the five day Whale Hiking Trail curated by Cape Nature
where you will be taken from the De Hoop Reserve all the way along the coast through various reserves
until you reach the Hawston Harbour. Every night you will be provided with comfortable accommodation.
To do any of these is truly an incredible experience for any outdoor lover. The trails range from beginner
to advanced so there is something for everyone to enjoy on their holiday.

where orcas came into the bay and started killing great whites by eating only their livers and ever since
then it’s been very difficult to predict the behaviour of the great whites.
The crew members provide more than professional service and excellent customer care - each one is
also a fountain of information and eager to educate, inspire and inform guests about every aspect of the
sea and its inhabitants aiding in the conservation of all marine life through awareness of guests.

WEDDING DECOR

DECOChRairs

GHOST CHAIRS

HOT FOR WEDDINGS

With the ever expanding wedding scene and
trends beyond your wildest childhood dreams,
the recent decor options range from seating your
guests in elaborate wing chairs to rustic hay
bales. But if modern seating with twist is what you
desire, ghost chairs are the perfect choice — by
far one of the best trends to hit the wedding
scene thusfar.

With a range of shapes and sizes, ghost chairs
are an adaptable, timeless and convenient option
for any wedding.

Its transparency adds a beautiful natural edge
to outdoor weddings, allowing the surrounding
colours of the venue to, so perfectly, shine
through.

As a result of its contemporary yet timeless
features, it works as well in traditional as it does
in modern settings.

At the seated dinner receptions, overly complicated
chairs and table decor can easily make a room
look cluttered and dirty.

Although ghost chairs provide just as much
seated comfort and space as a normal sized
chair, they seem to brighten up a dark and
heavy room like few other pieces of wedding
furniture can, making a reception space which
feels greatly less cluttered and much more graceful
area.

Ghost chairs are so versatile, recent trends have
seen them even adding a whimsical twist to rustic
or alternative looks.

16

DECOCaRndles

Candles are often overlooked, but they transform
the atmosphere of a room in no time. Be it to
alter the mood throughout the venue or create a
memorable centerpiece, candles will do the job.

Being associated with romance, candles naturally
make for the best wedding room decorations, and
are a perfect fit when it comes to taking that step up
to a warm and welcome reception area. Whether its
plain white candles in elegant golden holders to an
elaborate red candled staircase to light up a double
volume room, candles are your best friend when it
comes to setting the mood. Add this touch to your
venue and see it change from clinical to cordial in
no time!

TREE STUMPS

We are obsessed with this rustic touch that has
taken the wedding scene by storm. Use candle and
tree stump pillars in different shapes and sizes for
that perfectly imperfect look. Incorporate elements
of green, flowers, even a touch of forest moss to
create a ceremony altar that will have you thinking
of wonderland. Even better, if you can’t decide
between in- and outdoors, this simple addition to
your indoor reception can satisfy the nature lover
within you, without having to move the entire event
outside.

METAL SCREEN BACKDROP

Metal screen backdrops are the essential meeting
point of modern whimsical meets industrial chic
trends. With blush hues of rose and sweeps of light
green, votive candles give this thick backdrop a
surprising flair. The perfect backdrop for your vows
during the ceremony and a versatile element to any
table in need of a unique touch.

MIXED AND MATCHED

Why stick to one type of candle when you can use
all the types you desire to add that imperfect beauty
to a completely symmetrical room? — combining
different candles for an eclectic, ensemble effect to
your venue.

17

FLOATING CENTERPIECES

Floating centerpieces with candles as their focal
point definitely add a wow factor! Use some
geometric patterned vessels or bright coloured
flowers to embody various of the best wedding
trends. To ensure no harm is done, modern innovation
provides the option of using ultra-realistic
flameless candles, leaving no room for the damage
of flames or candle wax for the concerned wedding
planners.

TALL CANDELABRAS

A special backdrop created using ground candelabras,
draped fabrics of your desire and floral details brings
a European, Old World theme to your ceremony. This
idea is absolutely perfect to use at a stately mansion
or fairytale castle wedding venue. Oh so romantic!

ACCENT WALL

Floral pillars and groups of glowing candles organised
at a focal point or used as a cover up is all it takes for
an easy transformation or a bland wall or dead cor-
ner. If your aim is keeping the rest of your decor as
minimalistic as possible, this is one of the best ways
to make sure all eyes will be drawn to a single point
in the room (or away from another).

GLASS ORBS

Want floating candles but they aren’t modern
enough? Try tea lights in glass orbs suspended from
a sea of elegant greens. This idea is simply perfect
for couples who love chic, modern styles, or if you’re
going for a minimalist wedding theme with clean
elements that don’t look lazy.

TABLE RUNNER

Ditch the tall, over-complicated floral pieces and opt
for a simple runner of greenery with monochromatic
flowers and taper candles to perfect the look. This
alternative to traditional centerpieces is both classic
and inviting, while placing the attention on your well
thought out candle placings.

YES, FRANGIPANIS

Frangipani flowers are a very popular choice for bridal bouquets, and their simple propeller shaped
blooms contrast beautifully with more complex flowers such as roses. If you are having a tropical or beach
themed wedding, frangipani could be the perfect flower for you and can be used as a wedding symbol or
motif as well as in the bouquet or arrangements.
Frangipani flowers are technically known as Plumena Rubra and are also known as the Hawaiian Lei
Flower. They are native to tropical areas of the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, and South and Central
America. Frangipani may also be known as Temple Tree, Champa, Egg Flower, Amapola, and the
rather unromantic name of Dead Man’s Fingers, depending on where they are grown.

LOOK OF A WEDDING FRANGIPANI

Frangipani flowers have propeller shaped blooms with a waxy finish, and are long lasting flowers.
There are two distinct types of frangipani flowers, Obtusa and Rubra.
Obtusa frangipani flowers have rounded petals with a shiny finish and are usually white or creamy coloured
with a yellow centre. They have a strong tropical fragrance, which is particularly evident in the evening. Rubra
frangipani flowers have pointed petals with a more matt finish. They are available in a greater variety of colours
including pink, yellow, and various pastel shades, but they tend to be less scented than the Obtusa type.

SMELL OF A WEDDING FRANGIPANI

Obtusa frangipanis have a strong exotic scent which is quite heavy and sweet and will conjure up images
of hot summer nights, making it the perfect flower for a beach wedding. Some describe it as smelling like
coconut although fragrance experts may disagree. Even if you are having Rubra frangipani flowers which
are less fragranced, you could include frangipani notes in your wedding perfume to add to the tropical
effect.

WEDDING FRANGIPANI FLOWER SIGNIFICANCE

Although most brides now choose their wedding flowers based on their colour scheme and the appearance
of the flower, it is always good to understand the meaning behind the flowers you carry down the aisle.
The wedding frangipani represents shelter and protection, making it a very suitable addition to the bridal
bouquet which was originally used to ward off evil spirits.

ATTIRE & ACCESSORIES

Slick city weddings:
KITTEN-HEEL SANDALS

The fashion crowd are all over ‘90s strappy sandals
this year, and luckily enough, it’s the perfect shoe
option for city weddings. We love how fashion
editor Emily Dawes has styled her bridal suit with a
pair of Zara kitten heels—just beyond chic.

Destination weddings:
METALLIC SANDALS

If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off for your
wedding, make like Who What Wear UK Editor
in Chief Hannah Almassi with a pair of metallic
sandals. Whether you go for gold mules or silver
block heels, these are sure to complement your
balmy surroundings.

Classic weddings:
CLASSIC COURTS

Okay, this isn’t exactly a trend, but some brides
like to keep it classic, and we say all power to
them. A pair of classic court shoes will look the
part if you’re holding your nuptials in a grand
stately home. You can’t go wrong with blush pink,
or for a little personality, opt for a coloured or
embellished pair.

Countryside weddings:
WEDGE HEELS

There’s nothing chic about getting stuck in the
grass en route to your party, so when holding a
wedding in the English countryside, you might do
better to stick to a wedge. This season has
seen mini wedges proliferate, and we love
Staud’s minimalist mule interpretation—a great
option for fashion brides.

ACCESSOJewRellIerEy S

NO: SHELLS
YES: PEARLS

I’ll probably be singing a different tune come
summer, but for now, my shell necklaces, earrings,
and bracelets aren’t getting much action, while my
pearl pieces somehow still feel as fresh as ever.

NO: CUFF BRACELETS
YES: DELICATE
BRACELETS

At this point, I don’t think I even own any big cuff
bracelets anymore, which is a good thing because
the only bracelet styles I’m interested in at the
moment are delicate. Think thin chains, tennis
bracelets, charm bracelets, and more.

NO: STACKING RINGS
YES: CHUNKY
GOLD RINGS

I always found stacking rings a bit difficult and
uncomfortable, so it’s convenient that for the time
being, I’m more into bigger, single rings anyway.
Whether it’s just one or one on each finger, the look
is all over my feed right now and, as a result, very
much on my mind.

25

STATEMENT X ELEGANCE

Bolder styles are more on the rise as gowns are
going in a more streamlined fashion. Time to get
ready for the return of statement jewelry.

OVER THE MOON

Moonstone is known for its beautiful luster and glow,
causing by light moving between the stone’s layers.
Moonstone jewelry pieces present a modern magical
touch and feel a bit more fresh than classic picks.

VINTAGE-INSPIRED

Expect a modern twist on the classic; estate
jewelry with historical significance, heirloom pieces,
or vintage-inspired designs are perfect ways to
show “something borrowed”

FLOWER POWER

Florals are staying to present a romantic wow-factor.
Many modern brides find themselves wearing
flower-inspired accessories long after their wedding
day, and believe it’s a beautiful way to freshen up
their bridal look (without floral crowns).

JEWELRY HEADPIECE

From Swarovski crystal-studded tiaras to delicate
garden-inspired creations, jewelry pieces for your
pretty hairdo really add a regal finish to your look.

26

ACCESSOHRats IES

THE BIGGER THE BETTER

We’re talking here about proper hats, the ones big
enough to pick up signals from outer space or
double as manhole covers. Fascination is different –
a milquetoast compromise that barely registers a blip
in the style stakes.

When it comes to creating a sense of occasion,
which hats do better than any other accessory, size
matters. Generally speaking, the bigger the brim, the
better the overall effect: think of Bianca Jagger in the
huge, louchely deconstructed one she wore to her
own wedding to Mick Jagger in 1971.

PLAN THE PURCHASE

The question of whether you should or shouldn’t wear
a hat having been settled, the only one remaining is
which sort? The key is to set aside a lot of time to try
different ones on over several days; this isn’t a
decision you should rush.

Take the outfit you’re planning to wear or, at the very
least, a photograph of yourself in it. Colourwise, don’t
worry about finding an exact match – in fact, a delib-
erate clash can be more elegant.

TAHSINMKUCAHBOAUSTTTHHEEFBRAOCNKT

Once you’ve narrowed it down, think about how your
choice looks from all angles. With reportage having
largely taken the place of posed wedding photography,
the back of your hat is as likely to be snapped as the
front.

LEARN KISSING WITH A HAT

Hats are magnetic – but, of course, this presents its
own difficulties. ‘It is notoriously difficult to socially
kiss while wearing a wide-brimmed hat,’ warns
Debrett’s.

The problem, fortunately, isn’t insurmountable. ‘There
is a knack to tilting the head at a suitable angle, but
two ladies both in wide-brimmed hats should avoid
such an “intimate greeting”.’

27

DRESS CODE 28

If you’re set on only allowing specific headpieces
at your wedding or would prefer larger creations
to be left at home, make sure that your guests
aware of this as soon possible. Guests will need
to know any dress code requirements at least six
weeks prior to the wedding day.

SUIT YOUR STYLE

Remember, you’re wearing the hat and not the
other way around. Be confident but choose a
style that ultimately you’re comfortable in and
can wear all day. Also, remember to choose
something that complements your shape and
height. If you’re tall avoid tall hats and go for
wider brims. If you’re short avoid large hats and
go for smaller structured creations.

HAT ETIQUETTE

The mother of the groom should always choose
a smaller wedding hat than the mother of the
bride. This is a set rule across all social situations
that dictates that guests should never out-shine
their hosts. If you and your groom are hosting the
wedding then the two mums can opt for equally
grand creations.

DON’T BLOCK THE SHOT

Ensure that your guests wear hats that don’t
drown their head and shoulders in pictures.
Ask the photographer to kindly remind guests
to adjust their hats for group photographs so
that their faces are clearly visible.

STICK TO TRADITION

When accessorising a hatband, or indeed your
bridal headpiece, with flowers, feathers or any
other embellishment, keep in mind that traditionally
ladies decorate hats on the right-hand side. The
opposite to that of men who always stick to the
left.

HAT RULES

Women’s hats are fashion accessories and are
part of their ensembles. Therefore, ladies are not
required to remove their hats when going indoors.
Gentlemen, on the other hand, should do so –
especially in religious buildings. That means no
top hats in the church or inside the reception
venue
– even for photographs.

Many people believe Yoga and Pilates to be the same? They are in fact very
different. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Pilates.

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates. It is a full body workout, focusing on
strength and flexibility training methods. Pilates focuses on the muscles of the core aka the
“powerhouse”. These muscles are located between the pelvic bones and wrap like a corset around
the mid-section, front to back. When you utilise the core muscles you should aim to draw the navel
in and up towards the spine which helps to engage the muscles of the core.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOGA AND PILATES?

As an instructor of both disciplines, there are quite a few differences between these two practices.
Although initially due to fluidity of movement and mind body connection, they can often be
misinterpreted as being the same thing.

Yoga focuses more on natural movement of the body, although there is also structure in a Yoga class
the structure comes in a different form. In Pilates, we move in a structure-set called a block and these
movements are set out to be performed in sets and repetitions.

DOES PILATES HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?

I get asked this question often. You will see the results of Pilates in how your clothes fit; initially you
aren’t going to see much difference on the scale. Pilates can range from mild to quite intense
depending on the instructor and the difficulty of the movements, it can be quite cardio intensive.
Losing weight and keeping it off relies on consistent exercise and establishing good eating habits.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A PILATES CLASS?

A good Pilates class should include a variety of different movements that allow for a structured
flowing class. There should be a sufficient warm up, this includes breathing work to help prepare
the body and to bring the mind into a more focused state.

Classical Pilates follows a set list of exercises performed one after the other and can range from
12-20 different exercises. At the end of the session, there should be some mild stretches included
to help bring the body back to a pre workout state. Be prepared to move slowly and to breathe a lot,
remember it also takes a while to perfect your routine so be patient with yourself if you do not get
everything the first time.

HOW PILATES WILL BENEFIT YOU

Pilates aims to improve posture by conditioning the muscles and through this helps to prevent
postural compensations.

Pilates benefits the body by increasing circulation, improving co-ordination, balance and posture, and muscles
appear toned. These are just a few of the benefits of Pilates.

Pilates is an excellent exercise choice for any one at any fitness level. Attending regular Pilates classes not will
not only complement any sport or fitness practice but will improve your posture and overall wellbeing.

Refine Anti-Ageing and laser clinic proudly opened on the 3rd of December 2009 in Hermanus. The clinic
was founded by Lindi Prinsloo, who has worked in the beauty industry for the past 17 years, and for the
past 10 years worked intensely in the aesthetic field, specializing in laser and light therapies.

“And what better place than Hermanus - with the wonderful
‘champagne air’ - already an anti ageing treatment in itself.”

The need for a fully fledged aesthetic center came about as a result of the advances in aesthetic technologies,
which provided alternatives to the more traditional surgical procedures that had been practiced for the
preceding decades. The development of the new laser, light, radio frequency and ultrasound technologies
specifically provided a cost effective means to improve the quality of the skin and also treat a wide range of
skin and body conditions.

THEY PROVIDE GREAT CATERING FOR A VEGAN WEDDING

ECO-FRIENDLY WEDDINGS

43

ECO-WEDIdeDas ING

Opting for an eco friendly wedding isn’t all about biodegradable wedding dresses or impossible alternatives.
It can actually be quite an easy transition that also doesn’t need to break your budget completely. It all
really starts with the little things like straws, decor and even something as simple as invitations.
The following are a couple of simple ways you can consider to incorporate into your wedding day:

THE VENUE

Your venue really does set the tone and theme
of your wedding as a whole. If you choose your
venue wisely you can actually eliminate so much
of that unnecessary decor making things cheaper
and using less plastic or paper for the environment
so choosing the right venue really is a win-win.
If you’re getting married outdoors during the day you
can also cut down on the energy usage in a big way.

THE STATIONERY

As we all know paper usage isn’t exactly benefiting
the environment and the process of creating your
stationery also ads to polluting the environment
so isn’t it kind of a no-brainer to use e-vites or
electronic posters or letters to your guests.

THE FLOWERS

Not all flowers are organic because some of the
flower farms use loads of chemicals and pesticides
that essentially harm the environment and kill
any bees or insects that come into contact with
it. It also affects the soil or even the people who
handle the flowers become ill. So when buying
your wedding flowers make sure that the flower
farm has a farm-to-table policy.

THE CATERING

Chat to your caterer and ask them to only use
foods that are local and in-season, this will keep
the costs down a little helping you with the extra
costs when buying the farm-to-table organic
produce that we highly recommend you to do.
It will not only be far better for the environment, it
will also benefit you and your guests by providing
you with such beautiful, fresh produce. Another
wonderful way to stick with the whole eco-frienly
wedding theme would be to create an entirely
vegan or vegetarian menu with your caterer.

44

THE WEDDING DRESS

The very first option to consider when you opt for
an eco-friendly wedding dress would be to have
look at your mothers wedding dress to see if you
can re-wear that or get it to a seamstress so they
can modify it to suit your style more. Another
option would be to have a look at vintage clothing
shops for some pre-loved dresses. You could
even go to some consignment boutiques or websites
who offer second hand rentals or sales.

THE FAVORS

For an eco-friendly wedding, look for plantable
favors like potted saplings, herbs or succulents.
Or, consider edible gifts. Look for some local
businesses for a bag of coffee beans or jams in
reusable glass jars.

BUY BOOZE IN BULK

Rather than buying lots of individual bottles or
cans for our beer-loving friends, choose kegs in-
stead, which greatly reduced the amount of trash
or recycling.

DINNERWARE

Use compostable paper plates and compostable
flatware. Another alternative would be to use
bamboo cutlery and straws.

BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES

A good idea would be to use dresses that you
know your bridesmaids will use again to avoid
the single use of their gowns resulting in a big
waste of material and labour.

YOUR EXIT

A nice thing to use for your guests to throw in the
air while you leave the church would be to take
leaves and punch holes in them and use those
little circles to throw. This avoids plastic, littering
and even when throwing seeds you may thinks
its eco-friendly but some of those could contain
seeds that will grow and destroy the surrounding
eco system.
